What's going on with this lawsuit?
Laura Beny is the most well known law and economics scholar at @UMichLaw. The dean sent her these kinky emails. According to the complaint he then retaliated against her.
Trumper law firm Jones Day is defending. abovethelaw.com/2022/09/top-la…
Along with his infamous coauthor Mark Ramseyer, @UMichLaw Dean Mark West is apparently the nation's leading expert on ..... the law and economics of sex in Japan.
Even though Laura Beny, a chaired professor, is the most well known law and economics scholar at @UMichLaw she's different in two ways: She's of African descent and she's a woman. Trumper law firm Jones Day is defending the suit, doing everything they can to bring her down.
.
Word is that some on the @UMichLaw faculty are laying low and not helping their tenured colleague Professor Beny deal with the dean. They are all waiting for their annual salary letter from the dean. That's what we call applied "law and economics."

The law on sexual harassment is messed up in Japan. No wonder I've been getting so much grief from American academics (all men of course) who deem themselves experts on the law and economics of sex in Japan. nytimes.com/2023/05/29/wor…
This New York Times article is of course incomplete without a quote from the outgoing dean of @UMichLaw, America's expert on the law of sex in Japan. campusreform.org/article?id=172…
Colleagues covering for colleagues.
That's no way to run the Supreme Court, or any office for that matter.
Congress has a right to know what's going on. cnn.com/2023/04/25/pol…
Anyone who has worked in a law firm or taught in a law school knows that colleagues almost never rat out colleagues. Most won't even criticize colleagues.
Why should we expect the Supreme Court to be any different? The Court needs an ethics lawyer AND an inspector general.
The Supreme Court needs a chief ethics lawyer AND an inspector general. Otherwise who knows what's going on inside? A justice could be writing and signing opinions while intoxicated. Colleagues would say nothing.
Is this a court or a frat house?
"Ego similis cervisiam" they say.
What kind of a public university Board of Regents hands a president a $260K golden parachute as a reward for going to work for a competitor? Meanwhile tuition is off the charts.
Regent @darrinrosha explains the utter incompetence here on @KSTP. kstp.com/kstp-news/top-…
With Ken Powell as chair of the @UMNews Board of Regents, we know the top brass will get a big payday. He plastered the Minnesota legislature with campaign contributions to get on the Board, and it's been a disaster ever since. startribune.com/pay-watch-gene…
Meanwhile Ken Powell authorized @UMNews to spend $$$ on lawyers defending the actions of a music school director who looked under a professor's skirt, talked about it and weighed in on her promotion file. Another who asked graduate students who they want to "shag, marry or kill."
Amazing. Minnesota political operatives are plotting to appoint yet another corporate CEO to the @UMNews Board of Regents to bust unions, and raise tuition. What a mess. mnagainstwheeler.org
Who in the Minnesota legislature will vote to elect to the Board of Regents of @UMNews a former CEO of Allina Health who made millions in salary off of billing patients while busting unions? @MinnesotaDFL will say no for sure (unless they really hate unions). @mngop?
The @UMNews Board of Regents is already chaired by a retired Fortune 500 CEO, Ken Powell of General Mills. These Regents spend millions and can't even stop sexual harassment and retaliation in the music school. The last thing we need is another retired CEO driving this clown car.
Here former Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson points out a problem with many university administrators in America. They raise tuition, turn a blind eye to scandals, ignore students and let irresponsible administrators and coaches do whatever they want. omny.fm/shows/chad-har…
Just one example I'm all too familiar with: Since 2019 Gabel knew about sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation in @UMN_Music, but did absolutely nothing. This is one more problem that could have been solved, but instead is now in litigation.
No, it's not OK for a university dean to ask graduate students in oral exams which scholars they want to "shag, marry or kill." And it's not OK for a university president to ignore that.

Mike Pence here covers for Trump whose actions one day almost killed him. cnn.com/videos/politic…
Now is the time for Republicans, as many did with Nixon in 1974, to defend the rule of law, rather than defend colleagues who violate the law. So far that's not happening.
Colleagues cover for colleagues.
In 1966 Governor Ronald Reagan proclaimed the Eleventh Commandment: "Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican."
In 2023 GOP fundamentalists say even indicted Republicans are not an exception.
Insurrectionists apparently not either.
