Some quick notes for myself before I visit the See Yup Temple in South Melbourne with a group of family historians this afternoon.

#chinozhist

On my mother's side, we are descendents of goldrush-era Chinese immigrants to Australia. There were three brothers who were involved in the Beechworth mines possibly from as early as the 1860s. Their names were 黄世彦, 黄世圖 and 黄世祚. familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1…

2/ Image
Wong Shi Hoo is my great grandfather - my maternal grandmother's father. He was naturalised and became a British subject in 1885. recordsearch.naa.gov.au/scripts/AutoSe…
3/ Image
Wong Shi Hoo died on 3 Feb 1908 in Melbourne. Interestingly he has a very auspicious registration number of 3888.

I recall seeing a photograph of his tablet at the temple.

His brother, Wong Shi Too, died in 1901. He also has a tablet at the temple.

Shi Too's will is at @PRO_Vic. It was drafted by Australia's first Chinese barrister, William Ah Ket.

The most famous brother however is Wong Shi Geen. He was the president of the See Yup Society. Here's a picture of him courtesy of @TroveAustralia. trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/arti…

7/ Image
Wong Shi Geen was a Chinese civil rights activist who campaigned against the #whiteaustralia policy.

This via @Library_Vic.

Wong Shi Geen, according to this writer in The Bulletin (again via @TroveAustralia) was "Melbourne's best-known Chinese merchant".

Got to love the sneering tone to the article too.🤨

So let's see what happens this afternoon when I go to visit the temple with the kids.

Monday's free Blink:
The Light We Carry by @MichelleObama
blinkist.com/books/the-ligh…
"Inside you is a light – it’s a spark completely unique to you: your talents, your determination, your curiosity. What’s stopping you from letting that light shine out fully? Is it fear?

"...acting to avoid fear makes us feel safe – but there are consequences."
"So, next time you hear your own fearful mind, listen to it. Listen to all the ways it encourages you to avoid change. To stay in your comfort zone. To keep your world small.

"Then ask it: Why don’t we try doing something that makes our world bigger for once?"

Going through the feedback on my presentation... @SteveTrumble made a comment that the participants in the video I showed used the video with a very "Socratic" method, or with a very Socratic pedagogy.

So I decided I wanted to know - what exactly does that mean?

1/
The best resource I found was probably this one:
Delic, Haris, and Senad Bećirović. ‘Socratic Method as an Approach to Teaching’. European Researcher 111 (1 November 2016): 511–17. doi.org/10.13187/er.20….

Unfortunately the English writing is not great.

2/
This is my interpretation of what they said.

Socrates was a Greek philosopher who lived in Athens. His approach encourages participants in the dialogue to seek deeper understanding during the discussion.

A thought...

The Immigration Restriction Act 1901 (AKA the #WhiteAustralia policy) didn't come out of the blue.

The Chinese knew it was coming and actively organised against it - politically and intellectually.

This publication was part of that struggle. #chinozhist

You can download an electronic copy from the @Library_Vic. It was originally published in 1888, well before most "Australians" had arrived on our shores from Europe.

2/
Through family history research, I was surprised (and immensely proud) to find that my ancestors were involved in this Chinese civil rights struggle. Wong Shi Geen was my great grandfather's brother.

Here he cosigns with some notable leaders in the Chinese community (p7)

"our contemporary society is too defined by materialism – and that everyone might build fuller, happier, and less cluttered lives by adopting a more minimalist approach to living."

I don't disagree.

"Your excess consumer goods may be holding you back from happiness."

I think this plays into sociomaterial aspects of happiness and joy.

Thursday's free blinks.

The Science and Technology of Growing Young by @SergeyYoung200.

This is timely because as I grow out a beard on my holidays, I've noticed there are a few white hairs!

Is this going to be a Benjamin Button story?🤣

Wow. Twitter emerged out of Odeo which was a podcasting platform. Who would have thought?
Dutt uses this an example of iteration-led approach. It's not visionary, and you end up with evolution, not revolution.
