Brain wave: Imagine if mega-carriers put as much planning into overnight parking as they do into fuel stops. Truck parking would be COMPLETELY transformed. 🧵below... #trucking @FW_Truck @TimothyDooner @puddleofyuck @BrokenSword25 @FWwhatthetruck @TruckingDepot @truckingshow
Big companies typically plan out their fuel stops using routing software that considers fuel cost, taxes, driving efficiency, and more. Its common for their drivers to get 50 gallons here, fill up there, and another 100 gallons down the road. This is actually smart.
Now lets get smarter. Mega carriers have this incredibly sophisticated routing software connected to their vast terminal, trailer, customer, and drop lot networks. How hard would it be to provide the driver with a list of suggested authorized overnight locations along the route.
Truck stops after 4pm are a nightmare for new drivers. They genuinely have no business being there for the evening pack in. Companies spend a fortune on driving cameras for road safety but put their drivers and equipment at risk daily when they try to squeeze into truck stops.
O/O's can't can't stand it either. Many of them are forced to play parking lot attendant and guide rookies into spaces so they can avoid having their life savings torn to pieces.
Imagine hearing this in a recruiting ad: "We will make sure you have a safe place to park every night!" I imagine that would not only attract new drivers, but also older, more experienced drivers who are sick of the truck stop drama.
The govt keeps saying they are going to build more truck parking. While we wait for that day, which probably will never come, the large companies themselves could put a big dent in this problem and do it in a way that actually benefits them!
It would help with recruiting, massively cut down on liability from truck stop accidents, and let them flex that they take care of their drivers. Maybe I dream, but maybe not. What are your thoughts?
