Last week, I was asked how I grew so quickly online.

My secret?

I studied copywriting.

Here’s how you can grow your audience with copywriting:
DISCLAIMER: This is NOT the only way to study copywriting.

This is simply the way I did it.

Cool? Let’s begin…
First, start with the fundamentals.

Read up on the greats.

Start with these:

• Cashvertising
• The Boron Letters
• The Ultimate Sales Letter

And don’t worry, you can usually find these for free online.
Done? Then by now, you’ll know you need to do this one exercise.

This one exercise drastically improved my writing…

What is it?

It’s called Copywork.

Here's how it works:
Copywork is simply hand-copying great writing.

Yep, that’s it!

It sounds woo-woo, but it’s the fastest way to help you notice:

• Patterns
• Structures
• And themes

Here are a few things I’d Copywork…

This blog: verygoodcopy.com

Got it?

Now it’s time to build your copy swipe file.

What’s that, you say? You don’t know what a swipe file is?

A swipe file is simply a collection of things that inspire you.

Things you could put in it:

• Pics
• Books
• Phrases

Pay attention to what gets your attention.
“But Jay, how do I find stuff to fill my swipe file with?”

Don’t worry, my friend… I gotchu.

Subscribe to these email lists:

• Tej Dosa
• Kieran Drew
• Eddie Shleyner

(Of course, there are others… but these are my personal favs)

The secret tho?
Don’t just read to read.

Notice what grabs your attention.

Then ask yourself, “Why did that grab my attention?”

Then work backward and deconstruct how they got your attention.

Kapish?
Okay… so far we’ve covered:

• Books to read
• Things to Copywork
• Email lists to subscribe to

Hmm, what’s next?

Oh! I know… Start writing!!! (duh)

Here’s how I’d start:
First, start on Twitter.

Why? Because Twitter has a 280-character limit.

This forces you to write:

• Short
• Sweet
• And snappy
“So I’ve done all this researching, studying, and writing… But how do I actually grow?”

Patience, my little grasshopper.

You see, it’s not about getting followers.

It’s about building the skills that gain followers.

Do you understand?
Do this for 6 months and document your copywriting journey.

• What new insight did you gain?
• What’s working for you?
• What’s not?

Write tweets and threads to you, 6 months ago.
And as you build skill and grow your audience…

You’ll position yourself for great things (no matter which way you pivot).

Alrighty, it’s getting past my bedtime.

I’ll wrap it up here. if you have any questions, just DM me.

Cheers!

- Jay

I've built a 35k+ audience on Twitter...

And a 23k audience on Instagram.

All while balancing school and sports.

How?
Tomorrow, I'm sharing:

• My 'Monkey Research Method' for finding genius ideas
• How I create 6-12 pieces of high-quality content every week
• And why I could be in the Bahamas right now (and you wouldn't even know it)

My content's been seen by over 25M people.

But I only write for 3 hrs per week.

Here's the 5-step system I use to 'multiply' my content:
Step 1: Ideate

Every Monday, I’ll block 30 minutes on my calendar purely for ideation.

I’ll go through:

• My YouTube history
• Bookmarked tweets
• Old journal entries
• My old content
• Favorite blogs

And then?

I’ll jot down any potential content ideas in my Idea Board: Image
Step 2: Research

Then, I’ll scour and scan:

• Books
• Articles
• Newsletters
• YouTube videos

What I’m doing is trying to gain an understanding of:

• What the problem is
• If it’s been solved by someone
• How I can build on top of their ideas to come to my own solution

If you spend more than 30 minutes writing a thread, you're wasting your time.

Let me run you through my "Twitter Engine" framework for writing killer threads (fast):
A few months ago, I burned out.

I used to spend HOURS wrestling to find the right words for my threads.

It led me to stop writing threads altogether.

But that all changed when I created my "Twitter Engine" writing system:
Step 1: Ideate

If you rely on inspiration to write consistently, you're setting yourself up for failure.

Each week I dedicate 30 min purely to jot down thread ideas.

• Browse the internet
• Pay attention to what gets your attention
• Make a list of potential thread topics

Since January, I've grown 13,678+ followers.

Here are the 5 secrets I attribute my growth to:
5/ Launching a product in public

I built a lot of hype leading to my product launch.

That grew my audience by 7,151 people.

The best stories are told as they unfold.
4/ Selling my sawdust

After my product launch, I shared everything that I learned.

The good, the bad, and the ugly.

People appreciated the transparency.

It took me 1.5 years to reach 34k followers.

But if I had to do it again, I bet I could do it in half the time.

How?

By following these 8 principles:
8/ Write to ONE person

Most people struggle to grow because they don't know who they're writing to.

Spray and pray doesn't work.

Be intentional with WHO you want to attract.
7/ Value > Virality

Going viral is cool in the short-term, but detrimental in the long term.

Instead, focus on educating and entertaining your audience.

• Write useful threads
• Share your story
• Inspire people

5 months ago, I launched my online business.

Since then, it's done over 5-figures in revenue.

My goal is to 3x that number.

Here's my game plan:
7/ Upskill

Writing is the foundation of my business.

The better I get at writing clearly, concisely, and elegantly...

The better my business will do.

I plan to spend a lot of time improving my craft.
6/ Build authority

Having a large audience is cool.

But the real differentiator is your authority.

I plan to build free resources to:

1) Solidify my learnings
2) Build authority in my niche
