Well, the Atlanta City Council passed $67 million in funding for Cop City, by an 11-4 margin, after over 15 hours of essentially unanimous public comment against it.
Quick thoughts before I go to bed.
This was a historic 24 hours. Absolutely shattered every record of public turnout. Made clear, unequivocally, that Atlanta residents are against Cop City. Over a thousand people turned out, repping many more. Incredibly diverse crew. Everyday Atlantans. Firmly against Cop City.
This vote drives home: there is no democracy in Atlanta. This project most directly impacts those who have no representation on council, and the hundreds/thousands who do have Council representatives were all ignored today.
Every Councilmember who voted in favor of Cop City did so knowing that they were siding with powerful corporations and the police foundation, not the people of Atlanta. There should be no confusion that 11 councilmembers directly, knowingly sold out their constituents.
And while there’s no democracy in Atlanta, there is a MOVEMENT in Atlanta. One that has never been dependent on council for its legitimacy or action. One that will keep fighting just as it has for years.
One that will only continue to grow, as more people are radicalized by the utter lack of accountability from elected officials. The September 2021 vote was radicalizing for many; this will be too.
One important point: this was us using the “right” channels that the powerful always tell us to use. And doing so in a historic way. And still being ignored. So Council only has itself to blame when people decide to use channels that are not condoned by the powerful.
Thank you to the councilmembers who voted no: @LilianaforATL (who did a lot of work behind the scenes to try to stop this), @jasonsdozier, Keisha Waites, and @antoniolewisatl.
For the rest, there will be more words soon. So deeply disgusted with the 11 people who voted for this.
In any case, the movement’s not going anywhere. It’s staying right here. There’s a week of action at the end of June. The fight goes on, just like it always has. #StopCopCity
There is so much to be proud of and excited by from the last 24 hours.
Now let me go the fuck to sleep. Love to everyone fighting Cop City here and everywhere else.

The hour of public comment just ended, and people are rightfully demanding to be allowed to speak. Some people have been waiting 14 hours. Chanting let them speak!
They are releasing for 15 minutes as people continue to chant Stop Cop City
Councilmember Lewis making a motion, seconded by Councilmember Waites, to extend the public comment sign up period so that everyone can speak who has been waiting. Legal department is saying it's not allowed.
They're saying nothing is possible. This is outrageous.
They are cutting off HUNDREDS of people from speaking. We'll keep fighting from inside to demand they're allowed to speak.
We’re over two hours from the start of the meeting, and this is already the crowd that’s formed, with chants of stop cop city and viva viva Tortuguita breaking out — and a ton of cops just walked in to join those already here.
Really makes you feel safe, doesn’t it?
People are lining up and continuing to chant — cop city will never be built :)
The city says it’s only tearing down 85 acres, but we know there’s nothing binding in the lease to hold the Atlanta police foundation to that, and that they leased over 380 acres to the APF. The plan has continually changed, and there’s no reason to think they won’t keep going.
They also have yet to allocate or even plan to allocate any money for this “parks” preservation, nor should preservation be contingent on destruction. So those who want to claim misinformation can kick rocks! atlpresscollective.com/2023/05/24/bac…
The city has continually shown itself to be untrustworthy when it comes to the plan and the numbers. So no part of me will ever believe it’ll just be 85 acres impacted—and if it were, that would still be unacceptable in its own right!
Huge reporting from Atlanta's paper of record documenting that the Mayor @andreforatlanta has been effectively lying to residents for years, citing @atlanta_press's investigation.
"In the spring of 2021, the Atlanta Police Foundation announced an attractive deal for city taxpayers.
If the city put up $30 million for a public safety training center, [the Atlanta Police Foundation] would handle the rest of the project’s $90 million price tag."
"That promise was repeated month after month, year after year, by one mayor and then the next.
But that’s not true. And it hasn’t been true for years."
