Yesterday, starterstory.com crossed $1.5M in revenue.

It took me 1,981 days.

Here are the 7 pivotal moments that got me here: Image
1: Early validation

In the first 90 days, I laser-focused on getting my site in front of as many people as possible.

I tried 12 channels and found one that worked: reposting our content on Reddit.

Everything changed the day I hit the front page of Reddit. I was validated.
2: I found my "X factor"

I needed something that would set my content apart from the rest...

I started requiring all businesses we featured to share exactly how much they were making.

Nobody else was doing this.

This made my content go viral.
3: Being vulnerable on the internet.

I documented my entire journey building Starter Story.

Revenue updates, the ups and the downs.

I started making friends online through my writing.

This put people in my corner - and I no longer felt like I was building alone.
4: I built a paid community.

I used to rely 100% on ad revenue.

As a bootstrapped company, I knew this wasn't reliable and I needed to diversify.

So I created my own product and started charging for it.

To this day, it's still our biggest source of revenue.
5: Always reinventing myself

Reddit was a short-term growth tactic - I knew we needed a better distribution channel.

So I went all in on SEO.

A few months later, we 10x'd our traffic and hit 1M visitors/mo.

My takeaway: what worked in the past won’t always work in the future
6: Think Week

In May 2020, I took a "think week".

7 days. No email. No social media.

It allowed me to zoom out and realize I needed to go ALL IN on one business.

I stopped tinkering around with different projects and committed to one thing.

That month, revenue doubled.
7: We found a home run acquisition channel.

In 2023 I decided to go all-in on video content.

Progress so far:

- YouTube: 1.5M views
- Instagram: 6.1M views
- TikTok: 6.5M views

This only feels like the beginning.

I'm proud of this little website.

My next goal: To help 1 billion people make money online by 2025.

Currently: 41 million.

An easy way to increase revenue: send more emails!

I've dug into our data, and the number of emails we send has a direct correlation to revenue.

Last month, we generated $28K from our emails: Image
Compared to January last year, total emails delivered increased 4.4x, and directly attributable email revenue increased 4.5x.

And it's not just adding more subscribers. We:

1. Send more newsletters per week
2. Put highly engaged readers into nurturing flows
I know this sounds obvious (duh!), but I talk to so many founders worried about "sending too many emails".

(I also used to think like this)

The truth is most subscribers are happy to get your emails, they really don't care.

Implemented a new table of contents today for all starterstory.com articles:

- Fixed to the left side of the blog post.
- Shows live progress of how much you've read
- Links to sections of the blog post
Closer look:
Very much inspired by @yongfook.

- Looks SUPER clean on the left side.
- Leaves the right side open to add a subscribe box / other CTAs

My prediction...

Selling knowledge will be the biggest business trend in 2021.

And it won’t be in tech circles.

It will explode in "mainstream" professions like mental health, fitness, interior design, tennis coaches, etc.

Here’s why I think that...
My mom is a therapist. She is 61. Her therapy practice is overloaded since COVID.

She does 8-10 sessions per day, and now has a months-long waitlist to see her.

She is working to the bone, squeezing out every last drop of her own time and energy.
She has no more time to give.

She has raised prices, but the leads keep calling every day and the waitlist continues to grow longer.

If she could, she’d make copies of herself. If that was possible, she could help thousands of people per month, instead of just hundreds.

It's been a week since I launched Lean SEO, my first info product, here's a look at the numbers:

Sales: $28,226
Hours spent creating: 85.5
Hours spent promoting: 18.5
Total hours: 104

What I learned:
1/ Sales

My sales strategy? None.

No ads, and no elaborate landing pages.

Just:

- emailing back and forth with people interested
- tweeting about SEO related things
- an email list of 150 people
- sharing my process of creating the course itself
Preorders (with a discount) totally killed it. More than 50% of my sales were preorders.

Launch day sales were a bit weak. I think the price was too high for Twitter.

However, I think there will be a nice long tail of sales. I'm still making a few sales every day. (~$500/day)

I don’t understand why people go crazy for fancy expensive SEO tools.

I just use Google search autocomplete to find content ideas and keywords, and this has worked really well for me.

Here's how I do it:

I just type a big keyword and then the letter “a”...
Then, I’ll try with a few other letters of the alphabet.

Typing “b”, and “c”, and “d”, etc:
Another thing I’ll do is stick my cursor in the middle of a query:
