Whether it's NFL players kneeling to protest racial inequality, or the PGA selling itself to a murderous Saudi despot, both sports leagues have made some controversial political statements.
All respect to the vast majority of golfers on the tour for opposing LIV all along.
And really all respect to athletes on both the PGA and NFL for being much more aware and thoughtful than athletes are portrayed as being.

(1) Breaking character: Since there's been a lot of talk about universities being "too woke", I'm going to tell you a story of being on a DEI committee. Spoiler: they aren't woke at all.
(2) First DEI committee meeting (for my department), one of the few women in the department says "we have a huge climate problem and that should be our focus". I agree, the other committee members seem to agree and we discuss
(3) I explain to people that the department chair already knows this and is trying to do something about the individual causing it but the deans won't let him.
Nate Silver may be the Mick Jagger of data journalism, but Democrats' unexpectedly strong performance has the numbers guru singing a sad country song this morning.
by Maureen Dowd
She probably doesn't know about Dead Flowers and Dear Doctor.
FWIW, Nate did fine last night and generally his data-based stuff is good. He just vibes too much about stuff he doesn't understand on Twitter.
My group with Nate is this: there’s plenty of other data-based guys who ground almost all of their commentary in something to do with data. Maybe it’s wrong maybe it’s bullshit sometimes. But it’s not pure hot take. Which is what Nate’s doing now
FUNDRAISING: We raised 1.7 million for candidates and state parties in the 2020 cycle at Balloon Juice. I had decided to do no fundraising that might just go to ads this cycle. I've completely changed my mind. One word: Dobbs (1/x)
I agree the ads against Collins in 2020 did nothing. But if you took that same money and had all ads trashing her for voting for Kavanaugh and turning the country into Gilead, they would have done a lot.
The media is badly underestimating the potency of the abortion issue...
It was inevitable they would. The two issues (other than Trump-related stuff) where the media missed worst on public opinion were Clinton's impeachment and the Schiavo case....
@JHWeissmann Is there anyone involved with IDW U who can be considered a humanist? I mean that quite broadly -- a PhD in humanities or body of work in the literature or art. The only one I can think of is David Mamet and he's a bit of a stretch at this point.
@JHWeissmann Academic IDW people are almost invariably social scientists of some kind of people in something with the modifier "evolutionary" in it.
@JHWeissmann There's a reason for this too: working in scientific or mathematical research (as I do) is a more or less constant intellectual humiliation (because it's hard and there are lots of other smart people) that deprives you of the ego necessary for this kind of undertaking.
Breaking character: At a very boring meeting, so I'm going to tell you my favorite IRL diner story...
I'm having lunch with a friend at a diner in "Trump country", western exurb of Rochester. She tells me a very dramatic story about an attempted murder....(THREAD)
and subsequent car chase. It has it all -- near escapes, bath salts, synthetic marijuana. She gets up to go the bathroom and the man next to me says "I hate to eavesdrop but...."
He pauses a minute and continues "I heard you say you were a number theorist, do you know anything about coding theory? I'm a retired engineer and I've always wanted to know more about it."
