Munitions expert's opinion. 100% underwater mining by at least 4 metric tonnes of trotile equivalent. So the dam was destroyed from below (engine room, or columns, or both) in order for the water to crash the rest above. That'd explain witnessed sound & seismo with no video proof 
Additional proof 1. The water in the reservoir level was intentionally record-raised days before the explosion.

Addiotional proof 2. On 30 May Russians banned all investigative works on any hydraulic structures ib case of accidents (Clause 10).

Possible correction. Ukrhydroenerho Head Ihor Syrota believes that mines could be placed into an inspection & drainage tunnel which went along the whole dam. It could massively hide the explosion itself, but demolish the HPP.
And another confirmation that it could only be an explosion from inside the dam by the HPP engineer.
