A coalition of organizations and organizers are announcing a referendum on the Cop City lease. Nsé Ufot is opening the press conference.
“Stop Cop City: Let Atlanta Decide”
Thread here.
“Today we are here to let the people decide.” Kamau Franklin saying the majority of Atlantans are against Cop City, and yet the City Council has ignored them. Announces they’re filing a referendum for a ballot initiative to let the people vote on ending the Cop City lease.
Filing referendum today; will have 60 days to get 70k signatures to get it on the ballot during the November election; will make sure that the people come out during this time to “SHUT DOWN COP CITY” #StopCopCity
Gary Spencer is up from the NAACP Legal Defense Fund — “We’re gonna start the process on collecting 70k signatures…We will not be intimidated. We will take our fight to the ballot box, and we know we will win”
Scarlett Mayoralgo from Georgia Working Families Power is up. “Our goal is to make democracy work for the many, and not the few that we are dominating city council.” Speaking about canvassing residents, who are distrustful of elected officials and do not want cop city.
Talking about the operation that will be live this summer to get people out — “don’t be surprised when you see us in your neighborhood” this summer
Let me say: Andre Dickens, the City Council, and the Georgia Dems fucked up. They’ve got the electoral orgs out here declaring electoral war on the city. How do @GeorgiaDemocrat want to win without these orgs??
Resident nearby Cop City site, Tee Tee, speaking about how residents were excluded from the process and weren’t allowed to vote. “We don’t want it. They’re gonna keep killing us.”
Press conference is a wrap!! Paul Glaze announces the referendum form has been filed!! Questions now.
Two things: follow and tell everyone you know to follow @CopCityVote; and visit the campaign website at copcityvote.com
Will be sharing more soon!!!!!
7 days from now, city clerk will have to approve the petition; then have 60 days to gather 70k signatures; those who were eligible to vote in last election can sign; then city has 50 days to approve signatures; will over-gather signature; then vote in Nov!

Bernice King speaking now about Cop City, speaking about how communities have been excluded from decisionmaking that goes on between corporations and elected officials. #StopCopCity
"This was the second time in three weeks that people came before the City Council...they came with facts in hand...at the end of the day, it was as if 'we're just gonna do this so we can check it off the list and say we've had a listening session with the citizens."
Talking about the anti-democratic nature of how the City Council is treating its residents. "There was no dignity of the process."
Well, the Atlanta City Council passed $67 million in funding for Cop City, by an 11-4 margin, after over 15 hours of essentially unanimous public comment against it.
Quick thoughts before I go to bed.
This was a historic 24 hours. Absolutely shattered every record of public turnout. Made clear, unequivocally, that Atlanta residents are against Cop City. Over a thousand people turned out, repping many more. Incredibly diverse crew. Everyday Atlantans. Firmly against Cop City.
This vote drives home: there is no democracy in Atlanta. This project most directly impacts those who have no representation on council, and the hundreds/thousands who do have Council representatives were all ignored today.
The hour of public comment just ended, and people are rightfully demanding to be allowed to speak. Some people have been waiting 14 hours. Chanting let them speak!
They are releasing for 15 minutes as people continue to chant Stop Cop City
Councilmember Lewis making a motion, seconded by Councilmember Waites, to extend the public comment sign up period so that everyone can speak who has been waiting. Legal department is saying it's not allowed.
They're saying nothing is possible. This is outrageous.
They are cutting off HUNDREDS of people from speaking. We'll keep fighting from inside to demand they're allowed to speak.
