(thread/tonight) What I'm hearing... Trump is frustrated not just with the indictment but with people in his inner circle who reassured him for months that it was very unlikely to happen... source close to Trump says "too much happy talk for way too long" about what could happen
A second source close to Trump says "Trusty knows the special counsel" and is expected to try to work with Rowley and Blanche to figure out exactly how to play the next step, which will be a move to dismiss/formal attempt to question special counsel and especially DOJ's Bratt...
Monday's mtg. with DOJ didn't go well. It was mostly the Trump team laying out their concerns and the DOJ officials listening. This was not a negotiation or a friendly "let's see where things stand" meeting, per multiple people briefed on it... Blanche didn't go but was briefed
The Florida factor has thrown Trump's team for a loop since it wasn't always expected but they believe the DOJ has been looking hard at jurisdictional challenges, thinking ahead... another factor that has several longtime Trump people on edge: MEADOWS
"Why the f--- has he been so quiet?" one Trump ally fumed in recent days. Confusion about whether Meadows has cut a deal or not, lots of guessing about what his attorney, George Terwilliger, is telling him to do as he faces mounting pressure on Jan. 6 case (remember the texts).
People who know Jack Smith personally have repeatedly told Trump's lawyers and friends that he's somewhat friendly as a person, but a killer as a prosecutor, per several people who are close to Trump team. "He's known as someone who will push and push and push," one says.
A law enforcement official says US Secret Service will be meeting tomorrow Friday with former president Trump's staff and his security officers and agents assigned to him to develop a plan for Trump's travel and appearance for arraignment, per CBS's Pat Milton
Speaking tonight to key strategists w/ several top contenders, evident that for now this isn't internally being tracked as an opening for rival camps. They think GOP voters will mostly rally to his side. But they also believe that once Georgia comes, Trump pol. bleed out possible
Per one seasoned GOP strategist close to one of Trump's biggest rivals: "At the end of the day, this probably plays out like the FBI search but a lot is going to depend on the specifics that come out" in terms of what was compromised, if anything, in terms of nat-sec, sources
@CBSEveningNews@NorahODonnell Learning lots of new info as of 10 p.m. ET tonight... this is a grave, serious case in the eyes of many law-enforcement sources... those who know Jack Smith say he would NEVER bring charges of this nature unless he had tons of testimony and evidence and is convinced he will win
According to a former federal prosecutor, proving obstruction is very difficult and to bring this charge likely means there is a lot of specific evidence in the hands of the special counsel. He is described as someone who would hesistate to bring that charge unless it was nailed.
Two campaigns to watch in the coming days: Christie and Pence. Christie is a former U.S. attorney who is willing and able to take on Trump, not just on the political front but the legal one. Has a grasp of the seriousness of Smith and the case, can respond with authority on both.
Pence, meanwhile, just jumped into the race and directly challenged his former running mate's respect for the Constitution and the rule of law. A witness in the Jan. 6 grand jury and a rival all at once, and someone who had classified docs but can say the feds dropped the probe.

(thread) Have covered Christie closely since his run for governor in 2009. Watching his NH town hall tonight. He's now in the race. A few observations... he's starting this bid on low simmer. Reintroducing himself to voters, casting himself as a thoughtful, seasoned GOP hand...
At age 60, after failed bid in 2016 and the scars of the bridge scandal still there, he's not entering with a rah-rah or bombastic message. This isn't (yet) the fiery Christie of 2010/2011. But there are echoes of his 2013 reelect in this 2024 campaign pitch...
He's saying to GOP voters: I know who I am. I know what you think. But maybe, if I can reimagine my own career and try to think "big" (his theme), the party can think about reimagining itself with him as a guide/standard-bearer. It's not an ideological case but an exit ramp.
BREAKING: Trump’s lawyers just spotted by @CBSNews entering the Justice Department, per @RobLegare who is on site… comes as sources tell me the special counsel is moving toward a charging decision in the classified documents case
Sources tell @CBSNews that Trump’s lawyers are expected to raise concerns about how prosecutors have handled atty-client questions during the grand jury but there is no sign the special counsel is going to waver from how he and his team have handled the crime-fraud exception…
(thread) This Pence development today is significant and potentially historic. A former vice president is now willing, within certain specified constitutional grounds his lawyers fought to arrange, to testify about potential illegal acts by a president. cbsnews.com/news/mike-penc…
Trump's lawyers might try to appeal Pence's decision, but they keep losing efforts to assert exec. priv. with this grand jury.
That means Pence could appear before Jan. 6 grand jury in the coming weeks to testify under oath about what exactly Trump did and said in private.
Think about what this means. The special counsel could now get a first-hand account of what Trump specifically said to Pence in Oval Office meetings ahead of Jan. 6, as long as Pence and his lawyers do not consider those conversations related to his specific constitutional role.
An indictment of Trump possible in coming days, but grand jury was not convened today, making ETA of a vote on Trump indictment TBD. Not clear what is delaying DA Bragg, if anything, or if more witnesses will be called.
2. Federal grand jury on Trump's classified documents, special counsel
Trump's lawyer in the case, Evan Corcoran, has been ordered by an appeals court to provide any evidence about Trump's handling of records, notes of mtgs., audio files, etc. And to testify about all the above.
3. Federal grand jury investigating Jan. 6 and conduct of Trump/his allies
Fmr VP Pence's lawyers could appear before judge as soon as Thurs. over his subpoena. Pence team willing to fight it to SCOTUS on constitutional grounds. Pence had 1-on-1 chats w/ Trump ahead of Jan. 6.
Former ambassador @NikkiHaley in snowy Nevada, Iowa tonight. Starts speech by talking up @IowaStateU basketball team’s latest victory and her bio. Tells crowd she grew up near farms, didn’t go to Ivy League, was outsider in SC GOP before being elected governor…
Haley is not running against Trump. Or DeSantis. Or anyone. Talking up rec, nodding twd some policy stances (broadly hawkish on foreign policy but also a bit 'America First' in rhetoric) and traditional GOP on fiscal policy, calling for some changes to long term fed spending...
Tonight is first time since her announcement, which I covered in C'ton, that I've seen Haley on the trail. Town-hall setting. Trumpism influence seen in how she talks about other nations (confrontational, same way she talks about SC GOP foes). But doesn't lean into nationalism.
As several observers have noted today, there are various ways the Pence subpoena issue could play out in court. Trump side raises privlege questions, which special counsel is taking steps to address and prompt Pence to testify. But Pence lawyer Emmet Flood's "speech & debate" ...
argument looms over a possible Pence appearance and could lead to more deliberation over the scope of questioning, particularly regarding Jan. 6/congressional certification-related questions.
As @hugolowell first noted, Pence has yet to make an appearance so what's unfolding is a preliminary attempt by the special counsel to compel Pence to testify.
