“On Friday The Globe asked the office of the ISR whether Navigator had pre-publication access to Johnston’s conclusions on Dong. It also asked whether the report was shared with Torys LLP lawyers who were not involved in the Johnston investigation…” theglobeandmail.com/canada/article… Image
It would be interesting to know on whose advice Johnston and Dong each hired Navigator to represent him. It’s possible each made the same choice on his own. But it’s possible each had help.
It would also be worth knowing how and why Navigator came to represent both: the investigator and the investigatee. Law firms, as I understand it, have rules prohibiting them from representing both sides of a case. Do reputational consultants not?
You’d think a firm whose business is to consider how things look would… consider how this looked. Did no one say: hey, this isn’t going to fly? Or did whoever signed the first contract not advise whoever signed the second? Does Navigator have so many clients it can’t keep track?

This is the right decision. It was an error of judgment to have taken the job — but it was the prime minister’s idea to offer it to him. I am less inclined to put that down to simple error.

Johnston resigning as special rapporteur cbc.ca/news/politics/…
It is the Prime Minister who bears responsibility for this mess, which could so easily have been avoided. He could simply have answered the still-unresolved questions about what he knew when. Or he could’ve called a public inquiry & consulted with the opp’n on who shld lead it.
At the very least, he could have picked someone with whom he did not have so many obvious personal and professional ties. But then, that seems to be a pattern with this government, and this prime minister.

"The classified docs TRUMP stored in his boxes included info re defense/weapons capabilities of US/foreign countries; US nuclear programs; potential vulnerabilities of US/allies to military attack; + plans for possible retaliation vs foreign attack."
nytimes.com/interactive/20…
"The unauthorized disclosure of these classified documents could put at risk the national security of the United States, foreign relations, the safety of the United States military, and human sources and the continued
viability of sensitive intelligence collection methods."
"As he departed the White House, TRUMP caused scores of boxes, many of which contained classified documents, to be transported to The Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Fla, where he maintained his
residence. TRUMP was not authorized to possess or retain those classified documents."

Why China Could Dominate the Next Big Advance in Battery Power - The New York Times nytimes.com/2023/04/12/bus…
“China is positioning itself to command the next big innovation in rechargeable batteries: replacing lithium with sodium, a far cheaper and more abundant material… Sodium, found all over the world as part of salt, sells for 1 to 3 percent of the price of lithium…”
“Recent breakthroughs mean that sodium batteries can now be recharged daily for years, chipping away at a key advantage of lithium batteries. The energy capacity of sodium batteries has also increased…”

Former Trudeau Foundation head says past leadership misled Canadians on Chinese donation - The Globe and Mail

So basically the recently resigned head of the Trudeau Foundation has just publicly accused the Foundation's former leadership of conspiring with an arm of the Chinese government to disguise the source of that $200,000 donation ...

... representing it as Canadian — on the tax receipt, in public statements and in its annual report — when in fact the donors were from China. Indeed, the ultimate source of the money, we now know, was the government of China.

Jack Mintz: Governments should end this destructive green subsidy war | Financial Post
financialpost.com/opinion/govern…
"Overall, Canada is paying an astounding $4.7 million for each of the new 3000 VW employees."
"VW will hire skilled workers from other sectors. As these other sectors face higher wage costs, they will cut back production. In the end, the subsidy won’t pay for itself. It will simply displace production and jobs elsewhere in the economy."

Globe editorial: Only in Ottawa’s world: Go on strike and still get paid - The Globe and Mail
theglobeandmail.com/opinion/editor…
"It’s also not clear when the government would take the minimal step of clawing back overpayments. And there is the possibility – bordering on likelihood – of PSAC demanding as part of a contract deal that there be no clawbacks at all."
"Treasury Board officials said last week that there would be just one errant paycheque, and that any funds would be clawed back within a couple of weeks. But PSAC now says it believes that striking workers will receive their regular pay however long the dispute lasts."
