Yesterday, June 10, was also the birthday of Joshua Higbee. A loving dad & family man, he was known for doting on his young son. Taken from a 4-year-old son & fiancée who he treated like a Queen, Josh worked long hours as a welder at the Excel Industries plant. Image
When he wasn’t working or spending time w/family, Josh enjoyed fishing. Adopted at 6 after a difficult early childhood, Josh grew up to become a loving, caring & hardworking man. Known for putting his handyman skills to work throughout the community, Josh was labeled Mr. Fix-It.
The shooter was served with a protective order while at work. 90 minutes later, he killed his first victim. He ultimately killed 3 people—random co-workers, senselessly killed because a dangerous, violent man was allowed to possess a gun despite an imminent threat.
An additional 14 people were injured in the attack including 5 who were in critical condition. A responding officer killed the attacker.
The killer was a convicted felon. He obtained an AK-47 semi-automatic rifle and a Glock semi-automatic handgun through an illegal straw purchase at a local pawn shop. On paper the guns were sold to an ex-girlfriend.

Another late post for June 10th…
Yesterday was the birthday of Lauren Rousseau. She would be 41 but died in 2012, mere weeks after she was hired full time at Sandy Hook to her dream job. She graduated from college 5 years earlier when teaching jobs were in decline in her area. Image
Lauren substituted at various schools and worked second and third jobs, including a regular stint at the local Starbucks, until she was able to get her foot in the door. After years of struggling, she had finally made it, only to have her life senselessly taken.
In November, she had celebrated her one-year anniversary with the love of her life, Tony. Her last text message was a response to Tony who checked in that morning to make sure that she was ready for their evening plans – seeing the newly released movie “The Hobbitt” with friends.

Saturday June 10th, my daughter got married. My posts are late because I never managed to post the last 4 of 5 bios during the chaos of the day. This fun celebration also reminds me of the hundreds of parents who are robbed of these milestone events by preventable gun violence. Image
Today, June 10, is the birthday of Catherine Violet Hubbard. She should be 17 but died in 2012 at Sandy Hook. When the 20-year-old shooter fired dozens and dozens of shots into her classroom with a military style assault rifle,
Catherine left behind an 8-year-old brother who was also on the campus and traumatized by the shooting, as well as parents who ended up divorced due to the stress of their collective loss.

The shooter had a long history of mental health issues including paranoia, unfounded accusations of harassment, &recalcitrant behavior on the job. In 1993, he kicked in an elevator door in the office & was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation & attend anger mgmt classes.
