On #TrumpArraignment Day, here’s your handy thread to debunk the 7 most common MAGA and Fox News defenses of Trump’s indictments:

[Spoiler: None of their defenses are based in facts]

Let's dive in...

/1
CLAIM: Dems are targeting Trump because he's running for President.

FACT: The investigation has nothing to do with his candidacy. The investigations into Trump stealing classified docs began BEFORE he declared his candidacy. And running for office does not shield criminality

/2
CLAIM: Dems are weaponizing the FBI to target Trump

FACT: This is a meritless opinion w/o evidence. Also, the “Democrat” allegedly weaponizing this investigation is FBI Director Christopher Wray—who was appointed as head of the FBI by one Donald Trump. Womp womp.

/3
CLAIM: Prosecuting a former POTUS is authoritarian

FACT: Since 2000, ~76 nations have jailed/prosecuted former heads of state—including allies—France, Israel, Taiwan,& S Korea. Authoritarian regimes DONT prosecute criminality by their heads of state—b/c they’re authoritarian

/4
CLAIM: The Biden DOJ indicted Trump

FACT: Trump was indicted by private citizens in Florida—as US Constitution requires. Trump was NOT indicted by Biden, Clinton, Pelosi, Soros, Big Bird, Target, Disney World, or the pride flag. His fellow US citizens indicted him—period.

/5
CLAIM: What about Hillary & Biden?

FACT: Hillary was never POTUS, was investigated, turned over all info, & 0 evidence of criminal intent. Trump was POTUS, blocked investigations, & admits to illegally taking docs. Oh, and a 2020 GOP investigation found no Biden wrongdoing.

/6
CLAIM: Trump's indictment is meritless.

FACT: If so, every top criminal defense lawyer would scramble to defend him. But instead the most MAGA of lawyers are avoiding him because they know he's unethical, indefensible, won't listen to them, & so refuse to sink with his ship.

/7
CLAIM: The POTUS is above the law & cannot be prosecuted for classified info.

FACT: To quote candidate Donald Trump on August 18, 2016, "In my administration, I'm going to enforce all laws concerning the protection of classified information. NO ONE will be above the law."

/8
In Conclusion...Donald Trump is now enjoying the rule of law he happily endorsed. He's the "law & order" candidate, right? If he’s innocent the evidence will show it. If he's guilty, then he’s not above the law so let justice be served.

That would truly make America great.

MAGA wants SCOTUS to block $10K student loan forgiveness for low income people b/c its "unfair."

Okay, let's play that game and see where it takes us.

Black people paid taxes for pools schools & libraries they couldn’t use during Jim Crow (1865-1965)—$0 reparations

/1
Native people had 270M acres of their land stolen via Homestead Act (1862-1987)—$0 reparations

"But that's ancient history!"—MAGA

So? In 2023—Undoc immigrants pay taxes for welfare benefits they can’t use

Documented immigrants pay taxes for welfare benefits they can’t use

/2
"But they're not citizens."—MAGA

So? In 2023, returning citizens pay taxes for welfare benefits, federal education grants, section 8 housing, and federal and state job benefits they can’t use.

ZERO MAGA outrage at any of the above. But it gets even worse. For example.

Keenan Anderson—a 31-year-old high school teacher & father—stopped LA police for help after an accident. They instead cuffed him, pinned him, & tased him repeatedly as he begged them to stop.

Keenan died of cardiac arrest from excessive tasing.

His crime—asking police for help.
Here's the media story.

LAPD is already blaming Anderson for his own death, claiming he was erratic and on drugs. The video footage doesn't lie. He asked for help, and they instead pinned him, cuffed him, tased him, & killed him.

How Do You Reform This?
theguardian.com/us-news/2023/j…
Keenan screamed out, "They're trying to George Floyd me."

He knew what was happening and he was powerless to prevent it. Instead, the LAPD he stopped to help him—as the law requires civilians to do after an accident—pinned him down and tased him 7 times. SEVEN. Cruel & inhumane.

Thread on a wild yet not uncommon exchange while getting my oil changed. I share as an anecdote of how embedded racism is in our society & how intrinsically it's tied to economics.

A white guy named "Bill" age ~60 looks at me & says, "Where are you *from* from?"

Me: [sigh]

/1
Me: I'm from Pakistan. [I go back to my phone]

Bill: Pakistan? What do you do for a living?

Me: Civil rights lawyer

Bill: I'm a lawyer too! But I stay away from race and women stuff. Last thing I need is to be called racist or accused of sexual harassment

Me: Huh?🤔

/2
Bill: So Pakistani huh? I'm a landlord too. Can I tell you a story about my Indian tenant? Do you know what she did to me?

Me: I honestly don't need to kno—

Bill: So I raise her rent & she doesn't want to renew. So I tell her I have to bring in people to see the apt. And

As a human rights lawyer I've supported refugees, asylees, incarcerated citizens, abuse survivors, & the religiously persecuted

Today I share a client story—a Black & Indigenous Christian community whose ancestral cemetery was sold & desecrated—& our fight to get it back

/1
Tl:dr Prince William County improperly sold the Scott Cemetery & property—an ancestral cemetery of Black & Indigenous people—to a wealthy land developer & stood by as they desecrated 100+ graves. We're suing to return that property & need your support gofundme.com/f/save-histori…

Full: The Coalition for Thoroughfare traces its ancestry back centuries. In Virginia history, Black & Indigenous found allyship together—intermarrying, worshiping, & burying their dead together. Denied their humanity, they found comfort in building community with each other.

As a human rights lawyer I've represented women seeking justice my entire career.

As Iranian women protest Iran's hijab enforcement—while the 'morality police' murder Mahsa Amini—I want to post this thread about Hijab in Islam. I hope every guy (esp in Iran) reads this.

/1
People often conflate "Hijab" & "headscarf." Wearing the headscarf is one form of Hijab, but men often forget that Hijab is much more.

Accordingly, when addressing Hijab, the Qur'an does not address women first. It addresses men first.

What? Men observe hijab? Since when?

/2
Well, since always. The primary responsibility of observing Hijab is not on women — it is on men. It's critical to understand this point.

How must men observe Hijab? Men are commanded to not stare at women & to not be promiscuous. The Qur'an commands men to observe modesty.

I’m celebrating my 30 year anniversary of becoming a US Citizen. I love my country & I demand a more perfect Union

Per the great James Baldwin, “I love America more than any other country in the world &—exactly for this reason—I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.”
Growing up in Section 8, on food stamps, & working since I was 15, I experienced for a decade the struggle that is every day for tens of millions of Americans.

I've experienced our country's ugly side—the death threats & xenophobia for being a Muslim immigrant of color, AND

/2
I've also seen the immense love, compassion, & justice of my fellow Americans. I've seen amazing teachers teach me & now teach my children. I've seen amazing public servants in law enforcement, elected office, & non-profit selflessly sacrifice themselves for the greater good.
