Which country is named after a planetary feature of Earth, because it was first demarcated by scientists in that country?
Yes indeed, Ecuador.
Oh yeah, equator was known for a while, its crossing marked by sailors frequently.
But Quito is where it was formally measured, demarcated, etc by a French team. Why the new country, not wanting to have another Columbus or Bolivar name, chose Ecuador.
This tech bro resentment about free buses for women in Bangalore reminds me of a Desi tech bro I know in NYC whose only complaint with subway & path system is flat rates. And he tried to convince me using my own example. 🤦 Like *I* should feel outraged at the "subsidy".
"you almost exclusively travel within Manhattan?"
"Yes"
"You are subsidizing people who come from outer boroughs or NJ. Isn't it fair that there be resident discounts for people like you?"
This was the direction his brain went in on encountering our pretty good train system 🤦
I of course tried to explain to him that it's a feature, not a bug, that someone who rides the longest, not have to pay more. Cos that defeats the very purpose of a public transport system. He was too hung up on "principle of fairness", which my people do a lot selectively.
US debt ceiling crisis is always a fake crisis cos nothing fundamental about the US Treasury changes, incl US credit worthiness. Literally the only thing stopping us from always honoring our debts (70% of it to ourselves) is Republicans and their selective fiscal conservatism.
"If I have to balance my budget at home, then why can't the federal government?"
Is an incredibly shallow sentiment, and also not true. Most households in the US have debt.
But regardless, maybe the biggest central bank in the world is different from your household? Maybe?
Since Gingrich years, we have just taken it as gospel truth that our debt needs to be cut.
Why? 🤷
Most of the debt is owned by the federal government.
There is no better investment in the world for trillions of dollars.
Today's big US politics headline, pertinent to @cricketingview's question a few days ago, is Nikki Haley coming out and saying, if what is in the indictment is true, then Trump was indeed reckless. And she brings up her military husband.
She's no longer running to be his VP!
Also, tho not surprising, the Chris Christie attack is also going to have an impact in the long run. He was once a US Attorney who put a lot of rich corrupt people in jail including Jared Kushner's dad. And he's a good communicator.
This is the beginning of the end of Trump.
I agree but also, that's the awesomely "all of this has happened before all of this will happen again" moment for me. I've been researching Watergate for a book recently and I'm amazed at how much irrationality there was in that whole episode!
A conservative rancher Airbnb owner, himself a chemical engineer, once ranted to us about how useless college is. The next day, he proudly showed us how the right mix of cows, goats, sheep got the max returns for his ranch, something he remembered from a college course.
In Oaxaca museum, there was a display on how ancients figured out how to predict eclipses. But they kept this knowledge secret and used it for political power. Pretending that predicting eclipses made rich educated people gods.
Belittling college is elitist protectionism.
And the funny thing is, those with generational wealth still get premium high education.
Conservatives go to Harvard and JNU and then shit on colleges while sending their own kids to Premium colleges
