Judging Kai Havertz based on last season makes little sense when considering Chelsea were such a mess.

Chelsea have so many special players yet the entire squad was below par!

Kai Havertz in the right environment is a top player. That is, and has always been, obvious..

THREAD! Image
Mikel Arteta's system is one that suits Havertz.

Havertz started as a 'raumdeuter', akin to Thomas Müller & Dele Alli, but largely evolved under Tuchel where he combined his ability to attack the box from deep & link play between the lines whilst being a focal point in the #9.
Havertz is really good as a #9 because of his physical stature which means he's a presence up front but is also technical in tight spaces, can drop deep to create for others directly or indirectly via space in behind, and can attack space to score goals himself.
Where Havertz struggles, though, is relative to his ability as an outlet as he's not the cleanest technician in the world, can't carry reliably, lacks the mobility and intensity to run the channels with regularity, and has an upright posture whilst arguably lacking muscle mass.
This isn't to say Havertz isn't an outlet, because he can be, but he's not on the level of someone like Gabriel Jesus or Eddie Nketiah in that regard who's body types are more conducive to retaining possession, engaging in duels, running the channels, and carrying in transition.
Not only does this have negative implications in transition-based games, but it also has negative consequences against deep blocks as Havertz can lack strength when playing with his back to goal.

Combine that with his subpar ball-striking & he's not the most complete forward...
Modern day #9's are typically good at everything whereas Havertz is closer to an old-school false #9 who have recently become relatively outdated in profile with more complete #9's like Gakpo, Benzema, Harry Kane, Vlahovic, and the like starting for the biggest and best teams.
HOWEVER, I say he is a good fit in Arteta's system for a reason. In fact, there is a lot of untapped potential with Kai Havertz.

He really hasn't had the best of luck so far in his career in terms of environments, and when he did under Tuchel he was the difference in a CL final.
At Arsenal, the expectation on Havertz wouldn't be to match a Haaland in terms of output.

They have Saka, Martinelli, Ødegaard (and whoever their new #8 will be) attacking the box from deep to contribute to goals, on top of their firepower outside of that (Jesus, Trossard, etc).
The real difference maker for Arsenal next season is about them transitioning into a team that have the quality to control games irrespective of who plays, akin to City under Pep.

Arsenal crumbled last season as soon as several injuries hit - they HAVE to address that issue.
If they solve that and control games with greater reliability, Havertz would prove to be a fine addition as a #9 because he wouldn't have major responsibility in the team relative to other #9's.

Arsenal would control games behind him + have many goalscorers alongside him.
That way, Havertz could excel as he could focus on combining between the lines, attacking the box from deep, creating space for others in attack & linking play. Then, he could regain his confidence & excel even further as a player.

He does have an 'elegant' streak in his locker. Image
However, despite the player-club fit being good from Havertz' perspective, Arteta and Arsenal should only pursue the deal as a luxury item.

The club have more important roles and voids in the squad to fill.

Arsenal need a #6, an #8, & technical depth in defence and on the wing.
Havertz may have untapped potential, but is he really going to surpass Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah to the point where Arsenal should sign him over immediate squad priorities? I'm highly doubtful of that. Arsenal's current #9's are TOP players.

Their priorities lie elsewhere.
Even if Arteta was to use Havertz as a #10 with a guy like Ødegaard in the #8 role I wouldn't be convinced that the solution would be optimal because Havertz has a poor weak foot and doesn't strike through the ball particularly well so wouldn't excel as a #10 akin to Ødegaard.
If Havertz is available for a cut-price deal and Arteta + Arsenal sign him on top of other immediate priorities, then it would be understandable business, but if they sign the player over signing areas in the squad that need immediate addressing, it wouldn't be a wise decision 🛑

Rice has all of the world class qualities Thomas Partey possesses EXCEPT:

- he's never injured,

- he's a leader of men,

- his pass selections are optimal in all phases of play.

He will increase Arsenal's overall control in EVERY game they have; €100m is a steal.

THREAD 🔴⚪️ Image
As much as Declan Rice played in a double pivot at West Ham, he often did so alongside Souček who's role and profile wasn't about making passes.

This means that A) Rice will adapt to Arsenal's 4-3-3 very quickly and B) West Ham need a pass-heavy player to replace him.
Besides, Arsenal may play a 4-3-3 in the very first phase, but most of the time they have a situational double pivot or even a 3 man midfield.

It all just depends on how many fullbacks invert at once or if the #8 drops deep to receive in the 1st/2nd phase.

Top setting for Rice.

If it comes down to it, Rice and Caicedo should choose Arsenal over Chelsea.

This is not to say that they won't succeed at Chelsea because Chelsea will likely return to their best eventually, but the best chance to win big trophies & develop as players is at Arsenal..

THREAD 🚨 Image
As a whole, the Rice and Caicedo situation is a really interesting one. It seems like Chelsea and Arsenal are the two clear front runners for both players with Manchester United more likely to spend big on a #9 & a goalkeeper as opposed to a 'defensively-minded' midfield profile.
A concept I always discuss is the decision making of players when choosing clubs. Not only must they consider where they're going to live, language barriers, the size of the club, how much they earn, etc., but little emphasis is place upon fit relative to player and team.

Kai Havertz, like all players at Chelsea Football Club last season, had a bad year. That is more so a reflection of the damning state of affairs at the club than it is of the player.

Havertz remains a good player, but his profile is one that has largely become outdated.

Thread. Image
Havertz is a #10-turned #9 because of his link play between the lines and his innate ability to attack the box from deep, similar to a peak Dele Alli type, particularly in the way that both were tall & lanky but still possessed a range of crafty finishes & tight space control..
However, #10's in a 4-2-3-1 have largely been replaced in recent years & have been tasked with adapting to a 4-3-3 as a deep-lying #8 or as a #10 on one side of the pitch where ball-striking is the primary requirement to excel as part of system dynamics (KDB, Ø, Griezz, Bruno F).

Imagine James Maddison in the Kevin De Bruyne/Martin Ødegaard role under Pep Guardiola or Mikel Arteta.. he would be utterly unbelievable.

The overlapping and underlapping runs to use his elite ball-striking, combinations, runs from deep, half-space crossing 🤯

Ange has a plan. Image
James Maddison has world class talent. Nobody has ever doubted that, and that applies to transition-based games and in games where he's the primary creative hub against low blocks.

His potential combinations with Kulusevski on the right wing are also mind blowing to think about.
Even as a short-term solution the signing makes complete sense!

Ange may not have the quality to play a 4-3-3/2-3-5 *now*, but he can use Spurs' double pivot options, play a 4-2-3-1 with Maddison in the #10, and slowly build towards the long-term system as he rebuilds the squad.

Ange Postecoglou's Celtic are largely special tactically & replicate many of the elite tactical staples present at the likes of City, Arsenal & Brighton.

Below, in this in-depth thread, I break down what he must do to rebuild Spurs, & that involves selling Harry Kane!

THREAD ⚪️ Image
Celtic build in a wide 4-3-3 in the very first phase with the wingers on the touchline and the #8's high & between the lines.

This shape requires high quality to build out from the back when considering there is a large distance between each of the players in the build-up. Image
However, many of the teams in the Scottish league don't press Celtic so they can easily build through the phases before they transition into their 2-3-5 shape in the final 3rd.

Both fullbacks invert alongside the #6 in the double pivot. This is where Ange's tactics are 🔝 class. Image

Ugarte profiles as a top player. I have always loved profiles that excel at the basics of midfield play, & that epitomises Ugarte.

He consistently shows for the ball, is technically secure but progressive where possible, can turn fluidly in possession and is 🔝 off the ball.

🧵 Image
Ugarte will ultimately replace N'Golo Kanté for Chelsea.

They are very similar profiles in possession in the sense that they can carry through the lines and have the physicality/mobility to make penetrating runs from deep, but they also have similar qualities off the ball.
What makes Kanté one of the best ball winners of all time is his obvious ability to cover ground, but he also *never* dives into tackles.

He always stays on his feet, stays with his man, and nips the ball away - it's not as flashy, but it's more effective than diving in.
