Schmidt invested in Astra, a rocket startup, which was selected by the Air Force AFWERX program for its Rocket 5.0 program.
Schmidt was a proponent of AFWERX’s creation in 2018 and promoted the program through testimony to Congress and as Chair of the Defense Innovation Board.
Eric Lander, Biden’s former OSTP chief, was connected with Schmidt through the Broad Institute.
After Lander was nominated, Schmidt contributed $150 million to the initiative. Inside OSTP, Lander hired officials whose salaries were paid by Schmidt Futures.
OSTP general counsel said that doing so raised "significant ethical concerns."
More than a dozen officials in the 140-person White House office have been associates of Schmidt’s, including some current and former Schmidt employees, according to @politico.
In August 2021, Lander released an interagency memo prioritizing biotech for national security. That same month, Schmidt incorporated a new fund which has invested in at least 4 biotech companies.
In 2023, Scmidt joined the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology.
It's clear that Eric Schmidt's involvement in key government offices and programs conflict with his business dealings and investments. What have we not seen or heard about?
We need accountability -- and more stringent ethics rules for advisory commission appointees.

The RESTRICT Act is legislation authored by @MarkWarner and @SenJohnThune targeting TikTok. It's goal is to review TikTok and it's national security threats. However, it does much more. 1/x
The bill includes language that would allow the Secretary of Commerce to take action "enforcing any mitigation measure to address any risk arising from any covered transaction by any person". This language is too broad for a bill that should have on specific purpose. 2/x
At best, this is a poorly designed bill. At worst however, it is a modern day patriot act. TikTok should be banned, but @HawleyMO's legislation (No TikTok on US Devices Act) is better legislation. It does exactly what it says, with no added BS.
