Don't Tamper With The Epics

I saw some Nationalists coming out with posts in support of "Ādi Purush". Their argument is, this is "Rāmāyan" for the youth brought up on Hollywood movies and Marvel series. The movie wants to promote our epic and hence we should support it.

Well, I politely disagree with this line of thought. I have my reasons.

1. Youth brought up on Marvel series and Hollywood movies: The same youth lapped up Bahubali, Ponniyin Selvan and RRR. The most popular scene in RRR was where Alluri Sitarama Raju turns into Rāma.

These movies didn't happen in another era but right in the era of Marvel series. Same youth turned these movies into gigantic hits.

2. Promotes our epics: Nobody has seen Rāma or Sita or Hanumān. But there are certain enduring images before our eyes.

Images that have taken birth from the paintings of Raja Ravivarma. Images from old classic dramas. Images from classic Telugu movies. Images from Ramanand Sagar's "Rāmāyan" and subsequent versions. "Ādi Purush" negates all of them and creates an altogether new set of looks.

Simply abhorrent images.

3. Drawing our youth towards epics: Do we want our kids to learn about "our" epics the way we have known them ? Or do we want to westernize our epics to suit to the taste of a miniscule elite bunch of youth ?

Should we change the imagery of our parents and ancestors to make them acceptable to new generation ? It's like editing old family albums and family videos to show our ancestors wearing suits and frocks instead of their original Indian costumes just because

some young people are used to watching people in these "so called modern attires". That is unacceptable to me.

This has nothing to do with #BoycottBollywoodMovies trend. "Ādi Purush" is simply repulsive. I just cannot relate to any of the characters, not a single one.

Vānara Sena in "Ādi Purush" looks like a rehashed version of "Planet of Apes". Hanumān still looks like an Arab and Rāvana looks like Alauddin Khilji from SLB's "Padmavat". Size zero Sita with westernized expressions and Rāma who actually looks like Rāvana from our old classics.

I would not want our youngsters to know "Rāmāyan" the wrong way. Hence I reiterate, I politely disagree with those who think "Ādi Purush" is good to promote our epics among our youth. NO. We don't change our epics to suit the tastes or narratives of youth.

We must mould our youth to watch and understand our epics the way they should be told or shown.

I rest my case !
