Amazon spent $20.6 billion on advertising in 2022

They avoided advertising -- and are now the biggest advertiser ever.

Let's break it down: Image
Bezos in 2009: "Advertising is the price you pay for having an unremarkable product"

Amazon in 2022: "We are the biggest advertiser in the world"

On average, they spent $56 million per day. It's estimated they are 2% of all ad spend on earth. Image

One thing to keep in mind when analyzing Amazon's ad budgets: They have many products.

Prime, Prime Video, Alexa, Twitch, AWS, Fire, Kindle etc Image
TV Ads:

The 2022 Superbowl Ad with Scarlett Johanson is expected to have cost $26 million -- this is the most expensive Superbowl ad in history. Image
Facebook Ads:

On Meta Ad Library, there are 1,800 ads live for Amazon US alone. Image
This isn't the global number of ads - Amazon has a similar amount of Facebook ads live for every region:

E.g. Here's Brazil Image
Twitter Ads:

Amazon is set to spend $100 million this year on Twitter ads -- making them one of Twitter's largest advertisers. Image
Google Ads:

They are Google's biggest advertiser.

In 2013, Amazon spent $158 million(!) on Google Search Ads according to Ad Age.

Their overall marketing spend has 10x'd since then - so it will now be significantly more than $158 million. Image
Influencer Programs:

The IG account has 952K followers - making it the most followed influencer program in the world. Image
Affiliates:

Here's how much Amazon pays out to affiliates per product category: Image
Some great data from Ad Age:

1. Amazon has only spent 3.5% of net sales on advertising and promotion.

2. 50% of Amazon's ad spend has come in the last 3 years Image
Amazon ad revenue = $38 billion

Amazon ad spend = $20.6 billion

Despite being the world's largest advertiser ever, they make MORE money from Amazon ads than they spend on ads.

Amazon ads now provide more revenue than Prime. Image
