What questions I ask as a European when choosing an MLS team:

1. Is the owner someone invested in the community?

2. Does the team have their own stadium?

3. Is the pitch made of grass. Not hybrid grass, GRASS!

LA Galaxy (too star oriented as name suggests) ❌

RSL (the “Real”) ❌

Colorado Rapids (not a fan of the owner) ❌

Inter Miami (I’m not looking for a circus) ❌

DC United (fan issues) ❌

Minnesota United (too reminiscent of two clubs I don’t like) ❌

Houston Dynamo (other teams in the area Im not fussed on) ❌

Chicago Fire (read they’ve not treated their fans the best like DC) ❌

Columbus Crew (majority owners) ❌

Update:

Thank you for all your responses. The following teams are no longer in the running:

SKC & STL ❌ (hurts to not pick either but that’s the point, I couldn’t split them. Two great clubs that are awesome for MLS!)

LAFC ❌ (I don’t do glory hunting but respect)

And then there were 7. 22 teams will not be my team for different reasons. Some I respect, some I don’t but there’s enough quality and proper support in MLS for it to work if they could just get the basics right!

The next wave can’t just continue to be expansion imo.

Philadelphia Union ❌

I have to say there’s very little to dislike about the Union other than that “we’re from Philly” chant. Great club, built and run the right way. So why not? Their rivals are the NY teams and I want to despise them for who they are, not because I support Phi

Houston Dynamo & Austin FC. ❌

Glad Austin got a team but f their owner. They deserve better but thankfully he’s basically been nurtured.

I gave Houston a chance out of respect for one of my favourite people on here @SunshineTX50 but if it’s MLS TX, it’s #DTID

What I love is that completely organically I’ve ended up with teams from East, West, South and North (MTL)

Damn, this is so difficult now. I’d be proud to support any of them from what I know.

FC Dallas ❌ so much respect for this club and their investment in youth. Dare I say the Ajax of MLS? The only “downside” is the agreement with Bayern. I’m against “feeder clubs” at the best of times and when that club is Bayern, that’s enough for me to walk. Ha Ho He Hertha BSC!

I should point out, i have absolute respect for Bayern (other than their QA deal) but their just too damn dominant for the good of the league and so for the good of German football HAVE to support against them (other than against RBL or Hoffenheim) #fiftyplusone

With these 4, it’s paper thin. The only thing I can think to do now is watch some games and see which atmosphere, community, fan groups, players etc grabs me.

I hope I’ve given a good account of what in part is a fantastic and underrated league. It’s the fans that make it! ❤️
