MICHAEL JORDAN’S ATHLETICISM MYTHS 🧵

He Could Jump 48 Inches!
He Ran a 4.38!

No.

MJ fans constantly marvel at these two fake athletic feats. “So incredible!”

Of course, MJ didn’t do anything close to these two things. It’s typical MJ exaggeration.

Let’s take a closer look.
MJ fans say Jordan had the greatest vertical leap in the NBA ever, at 48 inches.

Except, it’s just not true.

In high school and college, before he had a PR team, his leap was estimated between 39 and 42 inches.

It’s referenced several times. Nothing approaching 48. ImageImageImage
Note: The WORLD RECORD at the time was by David Thompson, 44 inches.

If MJ could jump 48 inches, why wouldn’t he set the world record? He could have an off day, miss by 8% and STILL own it.

Doesn’t that help his marketing appeal? 🤔

The only answer is…he didn’t jump 48”. Image
There’s also no video evidence of 48 inches.

At either 6’5 or 6’6 (take your pick), his head would need to be 6 inches above the rim, looking down. There’s no video of that.

Note: if you see a rim and you can see both the back and front of it, the picture is from the floor. Image
This, by the way, is what a 48 inch leap looks like at his height.
People also talk about this study from UNC:

1) The report isn’t blessed by UNC. It’s not official.
2) It doesn’t even say 48”
3) It has faulty data

His jump is measured at 46 inches, but his hip only goes up 38”. Is MJ elastic? Was Space Jam real? Can I meet Bugs Bunny? ImageImage
MJ’s standing reach is measured at 93 inches in the study.

The typical ratio for standing measurements is 1.34X height. At 78 inches, he should reach 104.5 inches.

So were his arms 11 inches shorter than average? He got all those steals with stubby arms?

The “study” is joke. ImageImage
MJ fans will then scream and cry and clip in an old Bleacher Report that says he’s at 48 inches.

But…Bleacher was an OPEN SOURCE periodical in 2010. Anyone could’ve written for it.

Rich Fernandes can be found. Guess what? He wasn’t a sports writer.

It’s unedited click bait. Image
MJ Fans will then say, no, no…you can increase your vertical with training!

1) Video doesn’t support a higher jump in the 90s
2) Elite athletes don’t get 6-8 inches better. Bad athletes might.

If true, we’d hear about players reaching their vertical jump maturity routinely.
When have you heard: “Bob is a great athlete in his first year. Just wait until he reaches his full vertical leap maturity and adds another 6-8 inches of vertical leap with training.”

Or…

“The team is surprised he’s only added 3 inches of vertical so far. “

Let me know.
Finally, MJ fans will also come back and say there was an Olympic measurement.

There wasn’t. There’s no reason for a measurement, and no evidence exists it was done. MJ wasn’t fighting for a roster spot.

The 48 inch vertical is entirely a fairy tale.

It’s 42 -43 inches.
On to the 4.38 40 at Carolina.

There’s a story out there from Roy Williams that they timed Jordan unofficially in a 40 at 4.38, and everyone was shocked. Couldn’t believe it!

Except…they also clearly describe that it was HAND TIMED.

That’s a problem. Hand timing is FASTER. ImageImage
A study was done on hand-timed 40s and they…time fast.

It concluded that hand timers click late at the start and record 0.10 to 0.25 faster than the actual run. 0.175 on average.

That would put MJ’s 40 at 4.55 seconds.

With no training beforehand…a more logical answer. ImageImageImage
Jordan fans will scream…”Roy Williams said it! Roy Williams said it!!! Are you going to question ROY WILLIAMS?!?

Yup.

It was a bunch of folks hand timing 2 runs. All starting late. Not counting 0.2 at the start, on average. Leading to a faster time.

It’s a myth. 4.5 - 4.6.
So what we have is an athlete who can run a 4.55 40 with no training, and a guy jumping 42 inches.

It’s elite athleticism.

It’s just not the Paul Bunyan-like mythology that we’ve all been told.

If Jordan’s fans need to lie win the GOAT argument…we know what that means. 🧐

2011 FINALS, GAME 2, LAST 6 MINUTES 🧵

This series is supposedly the biggest “meltdown” in “sports history.”

So let’s see how bad Lebron really was.

The Heat lost a 15 point 4th quarter lead in game 2. Against the greatest performing 5 man lineup in the last 27 years.
DAL, 6:25, down 15
Chalmers loses Terry on the baseline. Wide open 2.

MIA:
Lebron swing pass to Bosh at 12 seconds and Wade at 8 seconds, to start plays. Normal. How Miami played best in 2011.

Chalmers missed 3.

Damn, Lebron.

DAL:
Terry slips behind Chalmers for a layup. Image
Image
Image
Image
MIA, 5:35
They run Lebron under the basket, he takes a pass from Wade in the wing, and drives to the basket.

1) Is it not “aggressive?”
2) Go watch the end of games 4,5 and 6. They never run this again. Why? Because Lebron was gassed.

The difference btw gm 2 and gm 4 is huge. Image

CAREER ADVANCED METRICS: LEBRON VS MJ 🧵

MJ has higher career advanced metrics vs Lebron.

Except…of COURSE he does—he didn’t play as a teenager, and skipped 4.75 years on the downside of his career.

If you compare ages both ACTUALLY played, it’s an exact tie.

Take a look. Image
Using career advanced metrics has 2 flaws:

1) Career metrics give MJ a structural advantage. If the players were EXACTLY EQUAL, he’d be ahead. That’s a bad metric.

2) It argues “Lebron couldn’t play at MJ’s career rate at 18, so he’s not the GOAT.” MJ didn’t even do it at 22.
So, the best way to do the comparison is to compare like-for-like years.

Take out Lebron’s teenage years
Take out the equivalent year Jordan didn’t play in 1994
Take out the years equivalent to 1999-2001

When you do that, it’s a statistical tie. Jordan 1% ahead. Meaningless. Image

LEBRON’S CLEVELAND DRAFT PICKS: WHY DIDN’T HE JUST MAKE A PIPPEN? 🧵

MJ fans love to say MJ “developed” his team and Lebron “couldnt.”

But MJ got elite drafts, and Lebron got…almost nothing through Cavs drafts.

But…why? Take a look at the Cavs draft picks 05-09.

1/ Image
Image
First…note that, in MJ’s 1st 6 years (drafts/draft day trades 85-90), he got:

TWO Hall of Famers: Pippen, Kukoc
THREE All Stars: Oakley, Grant, BJ
A guy they traded for Rodman: Perdue
A guy they traded for Longley: King
+ Pete Myers

😳

Lebron got 7 total picks—1 starter. Image
Image
Image
Image
So how did Lebron get so little help? How did he get NO draft picks in both the 2005 and 2007 drafts?

He should’ve had a first round and second round pick for 5 years.

Where’d the picks go? How’d Lebron blow it? Image

MICHAEL JORDAN ASKING FOR HELP 🧵

MJ fans like to argue that MJ never asked Krause or the Bulls for help—he just quietly played with whomever they gave him.

It’s FAR from the truth.

He BEGGED for help, often through the media.

Krause’s quote here is a lie.

Take a look.

1/15 Image
Image
Image
Image
MYTH #1: MJ NEVER ASKED KRAUSE FOR HELP

Well…MJ met with Krause at the very least in 1988, 1989 and 1990.

Was this this just Jordan’s opportunity to say “good job, I love what you’re doing?”

We’re one tweet in, and ALREADY it’s clear it’s a fake, made up narrative. Image

Image
MYTH #2: JORDAN NEVER ASKED FOR STAR PLAYERS

He asked for:
Larry Bird
Kenny Smith
Sam Perkins
Buck Williams
Moses Malone
Larry Nance
James Edwards

All while Jordan’s salary clogged up the cap. Image

1996 SEATTLE “SUPER SCHIZOPHRENICS”🧵

The 96 Sonics are considered a great team because they were an MJ Finals opponent.

Except…they were actually big head cases, which everyone knew at the time.

They were at a “mental disadvantage.”

Here’s WHY they always failed.

1/ Image
Image
Image
Image
The core of the 96 team was:

Payton (91)
Kemp (90)
McMillan (87)
Perkins (93)
Schrempf (95)
Hawkins (96)

Coached by Karl (93)

They won 55+ games for 6 STRAIGHT seasons. Best team in the West by SRS in 93-96, 2nd in both 97 & 98.

But only:
2 CF’s
1 Finals
0 titles

WTF? How? Image
Image
They had structural issues:

No center
Poor rebounding
Old rosters

But the issues were bigger than that.

Kemp, Payton and Karl were all emotional wrecks.

There was no leadership
Kemp and Payton weren’t as good as advertised
Karl made it all worse

The team was a mess. Image

KAREEM ABDUL JABBAR: CHOKE ARTIST 🧵

A lot of people put Kareem over Lebron because they view Lebron as a choke artist prior to age 27 (2011).

So let’s take a look at Kareem up to 27, shall we? What could be hidden?

Note: Kareem’s name change was prior to the 1972 season. Image
Image
In 1970, at age 23, Kareem put up lots of stats, but lost 4-1 to the Knicks in the WCF.

The series swung in gm 2, when Bucks lost a lead in the last 5 min, and Kareem missed TWO FTAs with 52 seconds left, down 1.

Choke.

He couldn’t even defend a limping Reed (28/12). Image
Image
Image
Image
The Bucks lost the last game by 36 pts.

These were even teams—56 win Bucks vs 60 win Knicks.

They didn’t track player TOVs then, but the Knicks took the ball away 16 times in the 1st HALF, swarming Kareem.

He took the bench in the THIRD period.

WTF? Kareem QUIT? 😳

Ouch. Image
