Our Centerpiece presentation this year is UNDER THE TURQUOISE SKY starring 2023 CUT ABOVE Award recipient Yuya Yagira. A lush road movie shot in Mongolia, TURQUOISE SKY screens on Aug. 5 with Yagira and director KENTARO in-person, followed by a party! japansoc.org/TurquoiseSky

In tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952-2023), we're excited to screen a rare 16mm import of TOKYO MELODY (1985)—an awe-inspiring portrait that taps into the very nature of the artist’s raison d’être. Director Elizabeth Lennard and Akiko Yano will be present: japansoc.org/TokyoMelody

Our Feature Slate includes Kazuaki Kiriya’s bold sci-fi FROM THE END OF THE WORLD, I AM WHAT I AM starring Toko Miura (her first lead role since DRIVE MY CAR), stranger-than-fiction THE FISH TALE, and Closing Film THE THREE SISTERS OF TENMASOU INN.

This sole competitive section of the festival, our Next Generation lineup features a hand-picked selection of independently produced narrative feature films by emerging directors who offer a glimpse into the future of Japanese cinema.

Our Next Generation section awards the Obayashi Prize, named in honor of the late filmmaker Nobuhiko Obayashi (1938-2020), juried by critic and essayist Moeko Fujii @moekofujii; Dan Sullivan, programmer at Film at Lincoln Center; and distributor Pearl Chan (@kani_releasing).

@moekofujii @kani_releasing Rounding out the fest is our SHORT CUTS program, including: Rii Ishihara and Hiroyuki Onogawa’s eerie and beautiful FLASHBACK BEFORE DEATH, the 11-film anthology bench-narrated SILENT MOVIE, the action passion of SETAGAYA GAME, and drama DETOURING BLUE.
