On Tuesday, @MattHancock will appear before the
UK National Covid Inquiry.

Amid him eating kangaroo genitals, being bathed in cockroaches, dad dancing on TikTok etc, it’s easy to forget the sober detail of his pandemic record.

But NHS staff can’t forget.

And this is why. 🧵
@MattHancock In March 2020, PPE shortages on Hancock’s watch were so dire that nurses even resorted to using bin bags to try & protect themselves – not that this prevented them from catching Covid at work.

@MattHancock In April, Hancock appeared to lay the blame for PPE shortages at frontline staff:

“We need everyone to treat PPE like the precious resource it is. Everyone should use the equipment they clinically need, in line with the guidelines: no more, no less.”
theguardian.com/society/2020/a…
@MattHancock At this time, multiple NHS staff were lying intubated & ventilated in their hospitals' ICUs, having caught Covid at work - while trying to save others.

I was asked by colleagues on more than one occasion to witness them signing a newly-written will.

Multiple times since - and in the face of all those deaths of frontline NHS staff, all their grieving families - Hancock has tried to claim there were never any national shortages of PPE.

nursingnotes.co.uk/news/we-did-no…
Hancock has also alleged that National Audit Office concluded there was never a national shortage of PPE.

Needless to say, this allegation is - as one could put it - a load of kangaroo testicles:

There are, of course, so many other aspects of Hancock's record requiring interrogation - care homes, VIP lane contracts, testing etc.

Bu two porters & one nurse died of Covid in my trust.

I imagine every frontline key worker is going to find Tuesday's testimony a hard watch.

🧵 A note on complex grief and that partygate video:

Complex or complicated grief is characterised as being in an ongoing, heightened state of mourning that prevents you from healing.

A crippling sense of loss or other severe & unpleasant emotions endure & prevent recovery.
A person’s ability to function normally can be severely impaired, and for many months or years.

You may feel numb, angry, bitter, unable to focus on anything but the death of your loved one. You may suffer from hopelessness, depression or feel that life is not worth living.
There are many causes of complex grief such as how the person died (suddenly, traumatically), prior family conflicts or when the person who died was a child.

One key factor can be the thought that the death was avoidable, that it could have been prevented.

I am so bone tired & disgusted to be working in an NHS that’s been flogged half to death by successive Conservative governments that cannot & will not permit a national health service to flourish.

Why do I have to see patients take their last breaths on trolleys in corridors?
Why do I have to see a man of 80 collapse in tears because his hip pain is so severe he would rather be dead than endure it?

Why can’t I get him the hip replacement that would transform his life?

Why are people going blind because hospital ophthalmology is at breaking point?
Why are people with new diagnoses of cancer literally *dying* of that cancer before they even see an oncologist for the first time? (Seriously - this is seriously happening.)

Why are patients dead on arrival in the back of the ambulance because the call out times are dire?

Wow. Even by his own dismal standards, this is an abject new low for Aseem Malhotra.

To be clear, this is a GMC-registered doctor targeting vulnerable pregnant women with wildly inaccurate disinformation.

And I will say it again, @gmcuk - how on *earth* can you permit this?
Aseem Malhotra has nearly 500k followers. The clip he has shamelessly shared from Tucker Carlson is bogus. James Thorp, the US doctor whose 'research' Fox News is platforming is a known anti-vax disinformer whose claims are repeatedly debunked, e.g. here:
factcheck.org/2022/11/sciche…
There is *no* evidence that Covid vaccines increase the risk of stillbirth. In fact, the opposite is true. Yet again Malhotra is scaremongering in a manner that is causing, I believe, immense harm.

Yet @gmcuk permits this.

Why?

“I am genuinely astonished the BBC allowed someone with a known extreme fringe view on mRNA vaccines and the extent to which they are associated with cardiovascular problems to hijack an interview."

Well said, @SGriffin_Lab.

Where are you @gmcuk?

theguardian.com/world/2023/jan…
Flagging this @mariannaspring because you do such outstanding work exposing disinformation on social media of every kind.
@mariannaspring Before the trolls descend:

No doctor disputes that mRNA Covid vaccines are linked to small numbers of cases of myocarditis.

But the numbers are small, particularly compared to those harms caused by Covid.

To scaremonger by inflating those harms is deeply unprofessional.

Extraordinary story in today's @thetimes about MP Andrew Bridgen using parliamentary privilege to smear @TheBHF no less, claiming - without evidence - that a senior member of the charity has "covered up" data on vaccine harms.

Where is your evidence please, @abridgen?
Bridgen further claims - inaccurately & without evidence - that the benefits of mRNA Covid vaccines are "close to non-existent" & that UK doctors are ignoring their "serious & common" side effects due to "wilful blindness" or "conflicts of interest".
In fact, the @UKHSA estimates that a booster gives around 80% protection from hospitalisation from Covid in the over-65s.

And research shows that Covid vaccines have saved an estimated 20 million lives worldwide.

So this is the track record of the government that today is seriously trying to smear nurses & paramedics for "taking a conscious choice to inflict harm on patients" by striking for a living wage.

I kid you not.
