Congratulations to Sofia Ielmini, recipient of the Laura Ashley Piper scholarship for her academic excellence & community service.
The scholarship is named in honor of a former student rep & Air Force Lt. that died in Iraq in 1994. https://t.co/bVwQFoX46qwashingtonpost.com/archive/local/…
The SB takes a 5 min break, following lengthy speeches by almost every member on various proclamations.
The delay means that votes on the equity policy & giving themselves a raise won't happen until the late evening hours after the public has mostly stopped paying attention.
"We are supportive of expanding programming & academic opportunities at all schools, but we are already hearing concerns from many parents about how equitable practices will be implemented.
Does equity mean restricting or reducing programming or activities? Or taking away… https://t.co/O0MmlldRZ1twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
During the academic matters segment, Dr. Reid notes updates with its Special Ed Enhancement Plan, its compensatory services process, and its ESY program.
The number of ESY students this year is up from last year, but the program is vastly scaled back from the 2021 high.
It's almost 11, and we still have not gotten to the equity policy or the SB's vote to raise their own salary.
The school board spent over 2 hours giving lengthy speeches in support of various proclamations, resulting in critical SB business being pushed until near midnight.
The school board is currently considering the revised SRR policy.
@LauraJaneCohen raises an amendment to protect students with disabilities from having a statement requested w/o parental consent.
@LauraJaneCohen The school board is currently in a lengthy back & forth about parliamentary procedure.
Live look at the FCPA social media team right now.
After engaging in a fruitless effort to build the plane while flying, the SB gives up its attempt to wordsmith Ms. Cohen's amendment & will table the amendment until a later time.
There was broad consensus that students w disabilities need protection via more parental rights.
The SB votes to approve the SRR w changes that include a discrimination & harassment reporting tool for students & families.
Of note, the 4th Circuit recently found that a bias reporting system in Loudoun might violate the 1st amendment.
The SB passes a follow-on motion directing the Supt. to work with the SB to come up with an amendment to protect students with disabilities from being asked to provide a statement without parental consent for a suspendable offense.
The SB takes up the equity policy with the SB largely claiming that the policy is about removing barriers to ensure equal opportunity.
The SB claims, despite Dr. Reid's statements otherwise when she was hired, that the policy is not about providing equal outcomes.
Following various speeches spinning the equity policy (while ignoring the actual equity measures being used to support lowered standards), the equity policy passes unanimously.
Next up, the proposal by the SB to raise their salaries by 77%.
Some note this will help recruit economically diverse SB candidates. We note this justification would be more convincing if the measure wasn't being proposed after all the SB candidates have already been endorsed.
Tamara Kaufax brings an amendment to reduce the salary increase to $48K, to make the salary more comparable with similarly sized school districts.
Abrar Omeish says that materials supporting this salary measure were passed out during closed session, a statement that suggests that the school board discussed this measure in closed session to avoid public disclosure of their discussions.
The amended motion passes with only @AbrarOmeish voting against it. Ms. Pekarsky and Ms. Meren abstained.
@AbrarOmeish We note there is a credible argument for raising SB salaries as part of an effort to bring more nonpartisan professionals to the SB position.
Even more effective at accomplishing this would be if political parties stopped endorsing candidates for these nonpartisan positions.
@AbrarOmeish The Arlington branch of the NAACP urged a similar measure last year, noting that a small group of party insiders effectively choosing the next school board is anti-democratic & undermines the recruitment of good SB candidates. arlnow.com/2022/01/27/naa…
@AbrarOmeish The meeting ends at 1 AM.
Thank you for reading our tweet thread, have a nice night everyone.

The equity policy is cited as needed to go "deeper" & "more specific" than the 1 Fairfax policy to address "disproportionate outcomes" resulting from historical "marginalization" & "systemic" barriers.
The assumption is that "disproportionate" outcomes are the result of systemic barriers that must be removed so all students can achieve their best.
The policy doesnt really acknowledge a role for merit: i.e., that unequal outcomes are often the result of differing levels of… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Several SB members seek a better definition of equity.
This is a struggle b/c these concepts are often deliberately nebulous to allow preferred actions w/o compelling unfavored ones. E.g., when FCPS ignored equity to propagate some of the longest school closures in the nation.
In a surprise move, @AbrarOmeish abstains from voting for the Pride Month resolution.
While expressing support for LGBTQ students & opposition to hate, Ms. Omeish expressed concern w an atmosphere of cancelation, fear & polarization she says is preventing dialogue.
More than an hour into the mtg & the SB is still giving lengthy speeches in support of various proclamations.
Apparently, the rule change to stop lengthy SB member speeches for every recognition/non-binding resolution has been interpreted as not applying to proclamations.
The rule change was designed to respect families' time by preserving the recognitions while stopping the lengthy, virtue-signalling SB speeches that pushed important SB business into the late hours.
Carving out proclamations from the rule change has effectively gutted it.
@FCPSSupt highlights that parents will soon receive VVAAS progress reports from @VDOE_News showing how students' performance compared to other students. Dr. Reid notes the report won't include the '23 SOL scores.
Seemingly concerned that providing historical SOL scores will reflect poorly on FCPS (e.g., its decision to close schools), several SB members complain that the data is out of context & won't include the most recent SOL scores (which haven't yet been released).
During the superintendent matters segment, Dr. Reid notes she attended a charity chess tournament organized by @RachelCarsonMS students to aid children victims of the Turkey & Syria earthquake.
At the tournament, Dr. Reid played a Rachel Carson MS Chess Expert.
Following 70+ minutes of proclamations & recognitions, multiple speakers ask FCPS to expand inclusive preschool & early childhood options (such as speech therapy) for children with disabilities, a measure that will benefit kids with IEPs & prevent future siloing.
During the academic matters segment, @FCPSSupt touts FCPS's AP & IB programs.
The number of students taking & passing these exams has partly rebounded following dips caused by the decision to close schools.
Dr. Reid presents the FY2024 approved budget to the SB.
The budget is $3.5 billion, a number that's increased by $221 million (6.7%) this year, with almost 1/2 of that stemming from increased compensation including market scale adjustments.
🚨Breaking: School Board Member Retaliated Against Parent🚨
Using stolen screenshots, SB Member Melanie Meren emailed a parent's employer, retaliating against the parent for expressing disagreement with Meren's handling of school closures.
In the email, Meren uses screenshots from a private FB group (obtained without permission) to berate the parent's supposed "unprofessional & irresponsible" behavior to the parent's employer.
The apparent effort to get the parent fired stemmed from a FB comment expressing disagreement with Meren's suggestion to set up playdates 🙄 for the parent's high-school aged kid, who was depressed & lonely due to closed schools.
-FY24 ESSER budget presented, many ?s remain
-@FCPSSupt updates public on safety & security
-community speakers raise (1) transparency concerns, & (2) safety concerns at @GlasgowMS

The FY24 ESSER Budget was presented.
While much of the remaining ESSER $ goes to special ed contracts & academic intervention, not much detail was provided, e.g., why is ESSER $ being used for a large increase (+ $3.5 Million) in Cybersecurity spending.
@Megan4Schools raises concerns with the lack of detail provided & the fact that ESSER $ is being used to create positions without a plan for what to do about those hires once the ESSER $ runs out after 2024.
