I’ve given 6 attempts at UPSC CSE. I’ve been selected twice.

And over the past two years, I’ve mentored more than 50 Rankers in this exam.

So if I had to start my preparation over from scratch, this is the advice that I would give to the first attempter me.
For all the things that can change about UPSC CSE, there are a few things that remain constant.
It’s going to take time so be patient. It will take longer if you're impatient.

There will be parts of UPSC prep that you enjoy and parts that you don’t. But, it will be easier if you enjoy what you’re doing on a daily basis.
If you have to convince yourself to study everyday, it’s going to get HARD.

But if you still believe that you want to do it, it CAN BE DONE. It will just be a GRIND.
Chance does play a role in the process. Not in a way that hard work doesn't matter but just like it plays a role in all parts of our lives.

Get used to saying NO to things. Your friends will be out partying and playing video games, but you will be indoors studying.
No great thing comes without sacrifice. You will need to COMMIT to the game. You can’t half ass UPSC prep.

There will be a shiny new thing out there every other week. If you keep chasing them, you’ll get nowhere. Stick to the basics, they work.
You will need to write. And then write some more.

Learning to write might be the one skill that will float or sink your boat in this game.
Earlier, aspirants had a problem of lack of guidance. The current generation has an abundance of it. Just like social media, some can use it to their advantage. Most will just consume the content and not do anything.
If you’ve made it so far, then don’t just scroll to the next piece of content. Get off your ass and get to work.
Addendum:

Don’t take an EGO fight with UPSC, it’s not worth it. Some might make it through because of it, but most will be left broken and underconfident for a long time after.

Learn to let go and pursue other things.

It took me two failed Prelims to realise the simplest thing in UPSC prep:
If a month before the exam, you're still scoring below 50 in mock tests, you're not going to clear Prelims 2023. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it is what it is.

If you haven't worked for it so far, no one is coming to save you on 28th May.
At this point you have a choice:

Step up your game
OR
Prepare to be disappointed in 40 days

As simple as that. I know it's harsh, but sometimes you need a smack to the face to take action. I know I needed one.

How many questions should you attempt?

The definitive answer for UPSC Prelims 2023:
Exam Difficulty Variability

Attempts depend on how HARD or EASY Prelims is in a given year. For example, look at the cutoffs.

2016 - 116
2017 - 105
2018 - 98
2019 - 98
2020 - 92
2021 - 87
2022 - 85 (projected)

The lower the cutoff, the lower you can attempt & still succeed.
So what do I do with this info, you might be asking.

Read on.

UPSC prep is a game. Here are the 5 rules for success:
Rule 1 - You will get stuck.

It can with a subject, or a topic, or a skill. The trick is to not stay stuck.

Recognise what's causing the stuckness and if you can't solve it yourself, ask for help. But first you must accept that you are stuck.
Rule 2 - Getting better requires conscious effort.

You WON'T sleep walk your way into LBSNAA.

It will take some conscious investigative effort to get better. That means making choices and owning the consequences.

Don't feel like studying? You've got a choice to make.
