When I came home from the tv studio Saturday evening, the first thing my wife asked me was: “why are we even putting our son in a go kart?”. To be honest, I asked myself the same question after Dilano’s death in Spa.
It’s a strange thing that we realize and acknowledge the danger of racing, still somehow never truly feel it until the worst happens. As a sort of collective feeling, we all stand still for a little while.
The love and passion for the sport is bigger than the danger and the risk, let’s say. We do what we truly admire, the same Dilano did this weekend. And I sometimes felt guilt yesterday.
Talking about the Perez/Sainz fight, or the McLaren strategy, knowing that so many people were heartbroken about the loss of Dilano. I can’t even imagine the mindset of Richard, who won the next day after the loss of his friend.
But I don’t think guilt is the right feeling, it’s the thing that makes this community so great. It’s the reason Dilano will be forever remembered.
