Obviously this isn't MY STORY to tell, so I will keep it very brief.
I only care because he's a friend and I literally have videos promoting the company and telling people to apply there
I have an audience so I feel somewhat responsible
The Publisher’s Statement
The ceo of a certain company is always vague when he shades people, but anyone with a second grade reading level can put two and two together
DD has gotten a lot of shit WHILE working for the company and AFTER he left
THE PR MANAGER'S STATEMENT
Here is the PR Manager telling me why DD Mark does not own his work
Also went on to bash his current manga series that has over 8 million reads.
Tough critic
HEAD EDITOR STATEMENT
Here is the head editor debating with DD on why he does not have full ownership of his series
I have been given permission to share this
For a company built on creator owned IP, it did not seem easy for DD to leave with his work
WHY I GOT INVOLVED
When the whole ComicsBrokeMe twitter drama broke out, a few creators I know made vague statements
The PR Manager of the company DM'd me, somebody who wasn't involved or made a statement trying to get info out of me
FOR THE RECORD
The PR Manager apparently doesn't even like her job, she just sticks around to one day get a book or get published or something
She also subbed to DD's patreon and had him critique her work
Lets hope she gets published with the company one day!
Why I Spoke Today
In my most recent video I made a jab at the company in my section about copyright
Copyright law protects EXECUTION, not ideas
The company continues to claim they own DD’s work though and their artists comment stuff like this
TO BE HONEST
I felt like just keeping my head down and minding my own business
But the company continues to make vague tweets about how they own the comic
Which is CONCERNING for anyone else there who gets editorial feedback
The point of an editor is to HELP you with your story and give you ideas, feedback etc
Apparently helping your creator come up with names or story ideas makes you a co-writer
At that point don’t use an editor 😭
FINAL THOUGHTS
I apologize if any of this is disturbing or I ruined your night
I made sure to keep the whisteblowers anonymous. Unlike the company, I tried to back my claims
There's more stuff like voice memos, complaints, crazy contracts, etc but for legal reasons I'll stop
KEY TAKEAWAYS
No publisher or person is perfect. Please don't start hate campaigns are do anything silly
As someone WHO BELIEVES IN DIVERSITY, keeping all of this inside was eating me up, ESPECIALLY because I have an audience
LIKE I SAID
I loved the mission, I loved the artists who worked there, I even enjoyed learning under the ceo,
I was PROUD to make comics and tell people I was a part of the team
I WANTED to believe in this
IN THE FUTURE
I am sure the company or artists will vaguely mention me
I expect that
They will call me a liar, a troll, a harasser, and every other name in the book
Just look at how they talk about ex-artists who left
If you took the time to read this thread and think critically for a moment, I thank you
I felt like I had to speak up, especially with so many people IN THE COMPANY telling me their complaints
They are AFRAID to speak up, but just know they are out there trying their best
I also hope by this point you have a decent grasp on my character because THEY will talk about me like I am the devil for speaking up
I just hope you remember that I am just a person who loves to draw comics too
As always, keep creating everyone
Editor doubles down claiming that DD Mark does not own his #comic / #manga
Why even have an editor if you can't take their advice and suggestions
