I’m sad to share that I’ll be leaving @stonewalluk at the end of this month. Sad, but so SO proud of what we’ve achieved in the last three years, working as part of the incredible LGBTQ+ rights movement (BIG 🧵incoming!)
We got through the pandemic, working hard to respond to the escalating needs of LGBTQ+ people across the UK and to adapt to new ways of working.
We rebranded and rebuilt with pro-bono support from the brilliant JKR and Revolt (thankyou!)
We developed and launched our fantastic strategy Free to Be – centering equity, freedom and the potential of LGBTQ+ communities everywhere in the world
stonewall.org.uk/stonewall-stra…
We worked to support the implementation of inclusive RHSE, after *more than three decades* of campaigning for LGBTQ+ children’s right to be safe, seen and heard in education.
And secured changes to Keeping Children Safe in Education that make it clear being LGBTQ+ is *not* a safeguarding risk, though children from our community *are* at elevated risk from others.
After years of campaigning by the movement, the Census in England and Wales counted LGBTQ+ people for the very first time. And now we can see a beautiful picture of generational change, with more and more of us feeling safe to come out 😊
We led the incredible Out of the Margins network, supporting lesbian, bi and queer women’s organisations and trans organisations to conduct research and advocacy programmes on behalf of their own communities🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
We worked with our partners during and after the fall of Khabul to support more than 60 LGBTQ+ Afghans to escape and permanently resettle with their families in the UK. This resettlement work continues, because the need continues.
We led the successful campaign to equalize access to #IVFForAll – securing commitment in the government's Women’s Health Strategy (Health Boards need to catch up quick!). No more £25K bills for queer people building their families.👶
We supported the development of the LGBTQ+ Action Plan for Wales – with political leaders setting out a rainbow pathway towards becoming the most LGBTQ+ friendly European nation🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
We worked with partners in the Western Balkans and Turkey to support anonymous hate crime reporting through You Are Heard, and UK partners to launch @zoteria. Because we *all* deserve to be safe.
And after over 6 years of campaigning with the LGBTQ+ and women’s movement in Scotland, we helped secure passage of the Gender Recognition Reform Bill (now Westminster just needs to get out of the way!)🏳️‍⚧️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
We fought, and fought, and fought to keep a comprehensive conversion practices bill on the table. Six years on, the draft bill is stuck on the Prime Ministers desk while our community suffers abuse.

And we did all of this while subject to unprecedented attacks in the press, sometimes supported by government representatives. We did this despite a huge defunding campaign targeting our partners and funders. All because:
I started this job three years ago clear that supporting the struggle for trans liberation was the defining challenge facing LGBTQ+ organisations in the UK. That *now was the time for all of us to stand up for trans people’s right to live free and equal lives.
I leave this job as the anti-gender / anti-rights movement is running rampant around the globe, and the transphobic moral panic created here in the UK is being exported everywhere. The time for us all to stand up is *long past. We need your help.

I can’t say its always been a pleasure🙂, but it has surely been a privilege leading Stonewall. And whatever comes next for me, in every way I can, I will continue to stand with our community, and continue to fight for a world where we are ALL free #LWithTheT

🧵Every reasonable quality survey I have seen shows trans hostile views are more common amongst men than women. Cis/het men to be precise. This is the group that is most likely to think that trans rights have 'gone too far', and is most concerned about single sex spaces 1/4
If over recent years the media had simply reflected this fact, instead of persistently adopting a frame that positions cis women, and particularly feminist lesbian cis women as deeply concerned about (and at risk from) trans women, we would not be where we are today.
Where are we? Well we have our NHRI recommending restricting the protected characteristic of sex to 'biological sex', both rolling back trans rights and making sex protections for ALL women practically unworkable. While using *LESBIAN BOOK GROUPS* as one of their justifications.

Our public conversation about LGBTQ+ rights, and trans rights in particular has skipped the rails in recent years. Deadly boring, centrist positions are now commonly denounced as ‘radical’ and ‘going too far’. Yes, this mega🧵is a love letter to Theresa May’s LGBT Action plan.
In 2018, the government published an LGBT Action Plan, based on a major survey, consultation with the movement and collaboration with the community. It was pretty good! Here are just some of the things it included:
A commitment to publish ‘comprehensive guidance for schools on how to support trans pupils’. Just listen to that framing! Now there is widespread *fear* about whether guidance (when it comes) will support trans pupils or those who seek to marginalize them further...

The idea that the Scottish Gender Recognition Reform Bill was ‘rushed through’ is complete nonsense. Here, in excruciating detail is *why* it is nonsense, and why this is something no serious person should be saying: 🧵
Consultation 1 on #GRRBill ran from 9 November 2017 to 1 March 2017. There were 15,697 responses. 60% of respondents supported proposals to introduce a self-declaration system for legal gender recognition.
Consultation 2 was on a draft #GRRBill. This ran from 17 December 2019 to 17 March 2020. 17,058 people responded. The majority of respondents were in favour of the draft bill.

🧵One of the things that gets in the way of us *actually* treating all LGBTI people with respect in the UK is our absolute *conviction* that we already are. That we are already a completely progressive and rights respecting society. Reader: we are not.
When you have this conviction, anyone asking for further human rights protections is seen as unreasonable, even extreme. There is no problem you see? The UK is a leader in human rights across the globe surely? (we are not)
We need to start listening. Listening to the people who are pushed to the margins of our society. Listening to those who want to protect and extend human rights rather than dismantle them. Listening to global leaders who are horrified by what we are becoming.

A short thread on founders. No tea, just charity wonkishness😊You may have noticed that we’ve had *a lot* of media covering the fact that a couple of our founders think we shouldn’t advocate for the rights of trans people (or bi people ). In charity world, this is NORMAL. 1/7
Founder syndrome is A WHOLE THING in charity world and founder-led charities often crash and burn in the tension between founding vision and the changing world we live in. Often organisational infrastructure hasn't professionalised - many charities just don’t make it. 2/7
Where founders *do* step away, they can be the trickiest customers on the Board, or in the wider community. The baby grew up, you see, and it didn’t grow up into *quite* the person they imagined. 3/7
