This actually gets into something that has irked me about the Evangelion fandom for a long time & it's why I think Anno was right to troll them with basically everything he made related to the series after word. Departure from my usual threads but I wanna talk about this
As someone who, like many of you, is on the border of the Millenial/Zoomer divide, I grew up in an era that saw Eva get big in the West & then in the last couple of years have seen its resurgence among Zoomers. Something in both eras that has bothered me is "NERV was right" takes
Something I have noticed is that this take almost always comes from people who think that Rei was legitimately a better fit for Shinji (despite being the literal clone of his dead mom lol) & both speak to this desire a lot of Eva fans have to be infants/children their whole life
Coincidentally, a lot of these people also despise Asuka & some of them even think Misato is also "a bitch" but funnily enough, many of them also love her but only insofar as she is a new "mommy" to Shinji. "Nerv was right", "Rei was bestgirl" "Misato is mommy" are all wrong
The series is about how being forced to make connections to others is an inescapable part of growing up unless you find a way to totally insulate yourself from it & how adulthood, as painful as it is, can free you from something even worse IE being stuck as a child in perpetuity
This aligns very well with the religious imagery of the show (which again, "Nerv was right/Rei is best" theorists usually think was just "thrown in for fun" cuz Anno said so to troll interviewers one time) IE Jesus had to suffer to help humanity "grow up" &, in adulthood, be free
Misato is not a "mommy" to Shinji she is his feminine mirror image IE an adult who still acts like a teenager & searches for figures (such as Kaji) to reinforce that by being her surrogate father. Her sacrifice at the end is a mirror image of Shinji's final choice to return
And that's another thing, at the end Shinji CHOOSES to come back from Tangworld. Asuka says "How disgusting" because even though Shinji makes the decision, finally, after all of his suffering (& in doing so shows its possible for NERV to still lose) yet still wants to kill her
Why does Shinji want to kill Asuka? Because their relationship & the relationship of both to Misato forces all 3 characters to grow up & their growing up is literally what, if you project the End of Eva's conclusion forward, is implied to have saved the world.
This also throws a wrench into another braindead interpretation of Eva, which is that End of Eva is supposedly an "alternate" ending to the show's original ending. Not so. Shinji chooses to grow, thus saves humanity from NERV, thus "congratulations!" He becomes like Jesus.
Hence the show's title which again, is often perceived as Anno just fucking around. Neon Genesis Evangelion literally translates to "NEW Century Gospel." Or, a Gospel for the 21st Century, a gospel for people who Anno saw sinking into consumer childishness & escapism, as he did
THIS is why Anno hates his own fandom for the most part. It's why he called being Otaku a "socially acceptable form of autism" (before "autism" was de-stigmitized somewhat & interpreted by laymen as "Person who does nothing but indulge their hobbies endlessly & psychotically")
Much of the Eva fandom, to this day, does literally the opposite thing of what Shinji does in the actual original story; they choose Rei, they choose childhood, they choose annihilation & enslavement of their personhood for comfort. In Nietzschean terms they are "life-deniers"
Anyway, there's other dynamics to this but I would write a 200+ tweet thread to explain them and a lot of ya'll are going to be irked by this thread about a show from 30 years ago that many write off as meaningless and overrated already so I am going to cap it here
Epilogue: One can even read the Christ metaphor so far as to portray not NERV & SEELE as such, but specifically Shinji's father, as an Old Testament version of God who, through his Son, abolishes the degenerate application of his Word & raises human consciousness to a new level

"Conspiracy Theory" as a pop cultural fandom is largely the result of the disinfo fed to legitimate critics of the US State in the 1960s/70s being intentionally merged with the tabloid journalism of the 1980s & 1990s to produce a vast, endless ARG that reinforces the State
As much as this was intentionally developed by the State, it must also be said that the reason the operation has been so successful is because there is a virus in the "middle class" Amerikan mind which wants to be a Lone Survivor against godless Tyranny, & this seizes upon that
In turn, the critics of "Conspiracy Theory" offer alternatives to the alternatives of the cosnpiracists that are literally just taking what the bourgeoisie & the State bureaucracy & their disseminators at face value & ignoring their own "conspiracy theories" (IE Russiagate)
The replacing of the Seven Sisters Cartel with the Safari Club, the Soviet-Afghan War, the rise of organized crime in the USSR, Iran-Contra, the Iran-Iraq War, the "Dark Alliance" described by Webb & PROMIS by Casolaro, BCCI, Savings & Loans & the New Right are all connected
They are all different compartments of one macro-operation to finally not only dissolve the USSR but to do so in a way that would create a massive frontier for Western capital to colonize to finally bail itself out from the recessions of the 1960s & 1970s
This is not just a matter of "Western subversion." I consider myself a Marxist-Leninist & must look at the situation objectively. There were issues in Soviet socialism from the start that lent themselves to Western imperialists trying to find a "backdoor" into Moscow
It's fine to be misanthropic towards "normal people" if you live in the USA. The average normal person either is extremely depoliticized & has a life philosophy that consists of endless escapism or is hyper-politicized in a spectacular sense & thus a running dog of the system
Nothing anti-Marxist about this. If you stop talking about class position (including superstructural dimensions like race or gender) & start instead referring to the sympathies of some amorphous group of ethereal "normal people" you are the one who has abandoned Marxism
There's this funny phenomenon I've noticed on here & in Amerika generally where people are simultaneously infatuated with the concept of "being normal" yet they don't want to actually take the feelings & sympathies of these supposed "normal people" at face value & criticize them
I fucked up the details of the ATF gun walking scandal and basically got them backwards so I deleted my thread about US Special Forces & the intelligence community contributing to the growth of the Cartel in the same way they did with Salafism. Look here:
Wanna reiterate the thread's point wasn't wrong I just didn't want to spread disinfo about that particular case by half remembering it. The fact that HSBC essentially functioned as a Cartel laundry at the same time the ATF was selling them guns & DEA let them traffick coke stands
In any case, I'm sure that the economic relationship of the USA & Mexico becoming wholly contingent on Mexico submitting entirely to the US counterterrorism establishment had nothing to do with "the Cartels" ascendance. Surely there is no precedent for something like that
The original usage of the phrase "War on Terror" emerged during the Reagan administration and it was partially applied to US support for neofascism in Latin America. From Chavistas to MAS to the new Chilean constitution to AMLO, Castillo, & Lula, LatAm is still trying to recover
I'm not saying I am for everything AMLO, Castillo or Lula a campaigned on, but their elections & the "controversy" surrounding them,, the uprisings in Peru & Chile & continued mass support for MAS & the Chavistas Is part of the same response to the genocides of Condor & beyond
Also as a white guy in Amerika it isn't really relevant if I am for or against this or that thing in AMLO, Castillo or Lula's platform. What they represent is a larger wave of change in the region stretching from Mexico to Argentina reacting to US sponsored chaos for decades
Amerikan democracy can be exposed as a myth through multiple routes, but one especially funny way is to show how many prominent US "political dynasties" (itself a fundamentally anti-democratic concept) not only are all intertwined but all go mostly back to the fucking colonies
Furthermore, most white men who owned land & slaves (the bare minimum for having any power or wealth back then) were generally descended from Brirish landowners or were related to the Ulster-Scot shock troops who helped the Crown commit genocide against the Irish.
One of the only consistent philosophical currents running throughout the Constitution is that owning land is a verification of your innate superiority & thus a sign that you can be "trusted" to manage a republic (US, as most Birchers will remind you, is not a democratic republic)
