🚨The San Diego Padres season is OFFICIALLY over🚨

The #3 payroll team will be missing the 2023 Playoffs.

Here’s their playoff odds, followed by a thread⬇️🧵 Image
We all know the numbers:

.225 BA with RISP (30th)
.235 BA (23rd)
6-27 in games decided by <3 runs

The list could go on
The intangibles for this team are the things we notice as people who watch every day.

Hard to quantify “fight” or “battling” but there are some noticeable issues with the team.

Many fans of baseball who don’t watch the Padres wonder why they struggle.
As far as underlying unquantifiables that the Padres have, causing them to lose, I would include the following:
1. Selfish at bats.

That may be quantified in stats like BA w/ RISP,

But also the refusal to make changes, to adjust, to fail in the same way over and over again.

Huge factor leading to losses in close games as well. Manufacturing runs has disappeared from the Padres.
The refusal for guys to shorten up in situational at bats, put balls in play, not strikeout looking, etc. has dug this team, and certain players, into a deep hole.

Watch teams like TB, TEX, ATL conduct at bats; short-compact swings, on time and effective.
2. Player development.

The ONLY Padres-drafted position player on the Padres 25 man roster right now is 32nd round pick Matthew Batten.

There’s 2-3 pitchers, but again nothing amazing.

Look around other good teams in the league. Most feature young cores of homegrown guys.
The “good” prospects we do end up with over the last decade are either:

1. Traded for guys having career years
2. Get called up and wildly underperform.

Those teams with young cores play well because the guys all came up together. They play FOR eachother not WITH eachother.
3. Analytical MLB contributions

It’s apparent from watching Padres hitters:

They’re consistently unprepared, late on fastballs, shocked to see certain pitches in certain counts.

They’re overmatched, and they make bad pitchers look great. (i.e Taillon, Williams, etc)
Again, watch ATL, TEX, LAD, etc. and you’ll see guys ALL OVER fastballs, taking shorter, more efficient swings.

Those hitters are prepared and then execute from their preparation.

The Padres hitters seem to treat each at bat like they’re individuals in an All Star Game.
4. Micromanagement/Overthinking.

All the info coming out about Preller micromanaging is damaging, and it’s apparent with usage + playing time as well.

A guy like Grisham has a leash to play and maintain a <.700 OPS while Rougned Odor plays 1 day a week.

Make it make sense?
The Padres had a complete zero at catcher for 2 months and until Gary Sanchez became available, that would have continued.

Matt Carpenter DH’ed and played 80% of games again maintaining a sub .650 OPS. Why?

Preller probably has a little too much influence.
5. Zero fight/lack of leadership.

Some guys lead by example like Manny/Xander.

But a lot of times, that’s not enough.

When the Padres don’t score first or get down by 3+, the game is effectively over.

But we have Soto/Tatis/Machado/Bogaerts, right?
Again, a lot of times, vocal accountability is key.

Doesn’t mean screaming/yelling, and hey, maybe we don’t know about behind the scenes stuff.

But we do know of TWO separate ‘team meetings’ for the Padres this year and *usually* teams play better after those. Not the Padres.
6. Injury/Treatment

We’ve got guys like Pomeranz, Suarez, Morejon who seem to be perpetually hurt and reinjured while rehabbing.

But also tons and tons of issues with guys like Manny, Xander, Soto and like wrist/hand injuries?
Some is bad luck, some is fluky,

But Xander basically played with what sounded like an injury that would sideline most guys for 4-6 weeks.

These guys don’t get the proper treatment (medically) or the proper recovery which makes poor performance compound on itself.
7. Lack of depth.

This is the last point, but the Mets seem to be facing the same issue.

Massive payrolls, and yet somehow players like:

-Reiss Knehr
-Ray Kerr
-Ryan Weathers
-Mattew Batten
-Brandon Dixon

Are getting lots of playing time, sometimes forced into it.
Zero disrespect to those guys, but none of those names would even sniff the big league roster in ATL, LA, BAL, etc.

Yes, This is a product of trading guys away too, but this lack of depth creates losses on days like today, in Pittsburgh, and others.
Now, I know probably close to no one is reading this thread, and it’s mostly me just sorta venting.

But these issues have all added up to create a team that will miss the playoffs with a $255 million payroll.
Can it be fixed? Sure. It’ll take time.

Will it be fixed? That’s up to the players, and Peter Seidler to make sure he hires the right people for the proper positions.

Otherwise, things may get pretty bleak for the Padres as an organization in the coming years✌️
