When it comes to Israel (and, well, many other things), the Democratic Party is in trouble. Nearly 50% of Democrats now sympathize with Palestinians as opposed to 38% who sympathize with Israel. 1/
As Israeli apartheid grows even more brazen, and as the Israeli gov't continues to go after the country's judicial system, those numbers will only swell. The masks have come off entirely and, barring some unforeseen change, liberal Americans won't tolerate it much longer. 2/
The party establishment knows this. They read the numbers & know what’s coming. They see what’s happening in Palestine & recognize that a growing number of party leaders will, in the next years, most likely take Squad-like positions on apartheid, and they want to prevent this. 3/
The Dems have an apparatus made up of organizations and people whose entire goal is to whip Democrats who speak out about apartheid back into their “rightful place.” From @DemMaj4Israel to @ADL to @RepRitchie, the goal is to stop the Squadization of the discourse on Palestine. 4/
@DemMaj4Israel @ADL @RepRitchie But punishing left-liberal Democrats like @RepJayapal for describing what it takes to maintain apartheid & colonialism (yes, racism, and a lot of it) won’t magically make the party base sympathize with Israel. It will likely have the opposite effect. 5/
@DemMaj4Israel @ADL @RepRitchie @RepJayapal Palestine has become one of the central issues of American progressive politics, and no amount of silencing members of Congress, anti-BDS legislation, or faux accusations of antisemitism will be able to stop this. 6/
@DemMaj4Israel @ADL @RepRitchie @RepJayapal So many resources are spent shutting down speech on Israel by the same leadership that has no problem wearing Kente cloth & condemning American racism. They will learn, perhaps the hard way, that they were way better off spending their energy on actually fighting apartheid. END.

The IDF portrays itself as a 'moral army' that takes extreme measures to protect Palestinian civilians in Gaza. @yuval_abraham spoke to a number of former soldiers from the Intelligence Corps who exposed horrific practices that shook me to my core. Here's a thread:
@yuval_abraham The Israeli army knows ahead of each military operation that it will be killing non-combatants, often children. There is an "allowed" number of children that is permissible to kill. As long as this amount is not exceeded, the killing can be approved in advance.
The soldiers described how following an Israeli shelling, they are asked to monitor the phone conversations of family members in order to hear the moment in which they tell each other that their loved one has died — that’s how they check who was killed.

Look, mom! We made the cover of The Nation! What an honor to be part of this incredible collaboration between @972mag @mekomit and @thenation to bring readers two rich, analytical long reads on the death of the Green Line of the Green Line and what comes after it. Image
@972mag @mekomit @thenation The first comes from +972's @aj_iraqi, who writes about how Israel's consolidation of a single regime enabled Palestinians to rebuild their national fabric. Now, he writes, despite their physical dispersal, Palestinians have never been more connected.

thenation.com/article/world/…
@972mag @mekomit @thenation @aj_iraqi The second comes from @MeronRapoport, who writes about how the Israel's erasure of the Green Line finally gives us a chance to open our political imagination and envision the land between the river and the sea differently.

This is a wild one: back in the 1980s, an Israeli anthropologist named Yaakov Havakook published an ethnography on Masafer Yatta. This is the area of the occupied West Bank that the High Court recently ruled can be ethnically cleansed of its Palestinians. 1/
As part of its case against the 1000+ residents who are now under direct threat of expulsion, the state used Havakook's book proves that there were no “permanent dwellings” in Masafer Yatta in 1980, the year the army declared it a live firing zone. 2/
But when @yuval_abraham sat down to speak with Havakook earlier this month, the anthropologist actually contradicted the state’s account. 3/

BREAKING: Defense Minister Benny Gantz declares 6 Palestinian human rights groups “terrorist organizations.” List includes some of the most vital groups working in the occupied territories, such as @alhaq_org, @Addameer, @DCIPalestine and the Union of Palestinian Women Committees
One of those organizations is @UAWC1986. Read @alexbkane and @MariamBarghouti’s report on how Israel lobby groups targeted its funding sources — by dubiously claiming it has ties to 'terrorists.'

Back in 2019, @HenrietteChacar spoke to @Addameer’s Sahar Francis about the pervasiveness of incarceration in Palestinian society and how she and her organization have been targeted by Israeli forces for their work: 972mag.com/addameer-pales…

Israel's High Court upholds the Jewish Nation State Law, which constitutionally enshrines Israel as the exclusive nation-state of the Jewish people and demotes the status of Arabic.

Most importantly, it codifies an existing reality of supremacy that has existed here since 1948.
Read Orly Noy's report from the hearing on the law in December 2020, when the justices saw no problem with demoting the status of Arabic and argued that the idea of 'equality' is something that should be discussed in the future: 972mag.com/jewish-nation-…
In 2019, @HenrietteChacar spoke to @AdalahCenter director Hassan Jabareen about how the Jewish Nation State Law would be a turning point in how the world sees Israel. 'The debate soon will be whether Israel is apartheid,’ Jabareen said.

1. Want to understand how little the lives of Israel's Bedouin citizens mean to this country's leaders? Prime Minister Netanyahu just apologized to Yacoub Abu al-Qi'an's family for labeling him a 'terrorist' after he was gunned down by police in 2017. Stay with me real quick.
2. Abu Al-Qi'an was shot dead on January 18, 2017 during a police raid on the village of Umm al-Hiran in the Naqab/Negev, where they were demolishing several homes. Umm al-Hiran was under threat of total destruction. Israel had planned to replace it with the Jewish town of Hiran.
3. During the raid, carried out by a special police unit that enforces building and planning laws, the officers fired at and killed Abu al-Qi’an, who had just started his car at the time. He subsequently careened into Israeli police officer Erez Levy, killing him.
