🧵I've been receiving a number of inquiries about the 38G Direct Commission opportunity. I appreciate everyone reaching out to me. Given the level of interest I'm seeing, I figured a post would be an efficient way to communicate about it (please share with your network). Image
1. Current efforts building the Military Support to Governance (38G) capacity within the U.S. Army Reserve are routine boards conducted by the Civil Affairs proponent - the U.S. Army JFK Special Warfare Center and School, to evaluate civilian experience for direct appointment.
2. The most important requirement in the direct commission process is patience.

3. Before preparing a packet for the board's consideration, be sure to have a conversation with your family and loved ones. A strong support system is important while serving in the military.
4. After you're selected by the board (and referencing point 2 above), it may take up to 2.5 years before you take your Oath of Office (the pic shared with this post is me taking my Oath of Office in August 2022; I started the process in July 2020).
5. After you take your Oath of Office, you will go to training. As of today, initial training includes 6 weeks at BOLC-A and another 8-15 weeks at BOLC-B (depending which school you attend).
6. After your initial training is completed, you will complete more training which may include Captain's Career Course and other educational/training requirements that are being developed.
7. This may seem like a long time to be away from your families and your careers, but serving as a 38G is an incredible opportunity. Having said that, it's not something to enter into lightly (go back to point 3 above).
8. The selection process is competitive, and submitting a packet does not guarantee you will be selected.

9. If you are not selected for a direct commission, but you really want to serve in civil affairs, I highly recommend checking out other pathways (e.g., enlisting).
10. Finally, here are the eligibility requirements.

a. US Citizen (cannot possess dual citizenship)
b. Must have a Master’s Degree (or higher level of education)
c. Must have a minimum 4 years' experience in the SI following award of a Master’s Degree
d. Incurs 8 year service obligation (obligation must be met prior to age 62)
e. Eligible for a Secret Security Clearance
f. Not previously dishonorably discharged
g. Pass a physical exam at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS)
