1995 was a great year for mainstream guitar pop. Come down a YouTube rabbit hole with me...
Echobelly - Great Things. Iconic Top of the Pops performance.
Mansun - Wide Open Space. Stuff like this was in the mainstream charts, kids.
Sleeper - Inbetweener. This whole thing lasted about 18 months and then it was back to business as usual.
Elastica - Connection. Yes I know they ripped off Wire. Don't care.
I. Do. Not. Care.
Supergrass - Strange Ones. There are singles with better videos, but this sounds like The Small Faces having an argument with the Buzzcocks and it's sublime.
Suede - We Are the Pigs. It's difficult to communicate how massive Suede briefly seemed to be. Not Oasis massive, but Pulp massive at least.
Pulp - Misshapes. Speaking of which...
McAlmont and Butler - Yes. I know that Take That, East 17 and Robson and Jerome were around that year too, but to be honest I didn't notice.
Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees. I know. It's like I'm just making this up now, isn't it? But, yes, this was released in 1995 too.
Skunk Anansie - Weak. Ten seems like a nice round number. Might do one about trip-hop.
But maybe I'll do that on Threads.
