WHY NATIVES WON'T BE WATCHING OPPENHEIMER & WHY YOU SHOULDN'T EITHER. #BoycottOppenheimer
An in-depth look at why nuclear testing trauma and devastation should not be sensationalized or celebrated.🧵
Content Warning: discussion of uranium mining, negligence of Indigenous bodies, harm to Indigenous lands, mentioning of government genocidal tactics
Please take care of yourselves. Do not read if you or your family have been adversely affected by uranium and nuclear testing.
WHERE DID THE URANIUM COME FROM?
Uranium was mined in U.S. long before 1950 as many mines opened up in 1944 & operating up until 1986 on Indigenous lands. The mines were on Navajo, Hopi, Apache, Pueblo, Ute, Paiute, Shoshones, & other lands belonging to Indigenous caretakers.
HARMFUL EFFECTS OF RADIATION WAS KNOWN BEFORE 1950
German scientist Wilhelm Hueper & others knew of the harmful, lethal effects radiation. Hueper was silenced by the U.S. government by being barred from traveling west of the Mississippi River, where the mines were on tribal lands
MINING COMPANIES SENT INDIGENOUS MINERS TO THEIR DEATH
Mining companies & U.S. told staff to keep any educational materials about radiation away from Indigenous people. Many Indigenous miners went into these mines with no protective gear, went home, and exposed their families
DISPLACING INDIGENOUS PEOPLES TO BUILD U.S. MILITARY BASES
Oppenheimer tells the infamous story of the Trinity test, a nuclear bomb testing on Pueblo & Apache lands. The military base the test took place at was made by the removal of the Mescalero Apache people.
NUCLEAR ENERGY AND ITS LETHAL WASTE
Nuclear energy was popular during the 1960s into the 1970s. To this day, the U.S. does not have a central repository for nuclear wastes. Waste sites & uranium capped mines have been proved to leak into bodies of water & contaminate sandstorms.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:
After much request from my community, I've decided to educate the public about why Oppenheimer and other movies about nuclear testing and energy is extremely problematic and contributes to genocide.
I must admit that this topic is extremely personal to me as...(1)
my másání (maternal grandmother) passed away from uranium exposure so writing about this and reliving the facts was extremely hard. Please do not read if you or your family went through something similar. If you're like me, I pray for healing of your spirit as you'll need it (2)
to get through these sides. If you are reading, please read all the way through for some tips on how you can support Native Peoples. As always, thank you for reading, sharing, and amplifying my and other Indigenous peoples voices. Ahéhee' (thank you) 🖤💙💛🤍 (3)
