I had a somewhat strange conversation with my father last night. To give you an idea of the demographics: he's white, Mormon, 70s, Republican, supports Ukraine, watches some (daytime) Fox News, but not the evening hosts. Has "uneasy" relationship w/ LGBT stuff. 1/n
He fits very much into that category of cognitive dissonance where he is trying to square the circle of what he's told about LGBT people, vs. having a kid and a grandkid who are LGBT. When I came out, he checked with my brother to see if I'd gone nuts. 2/n
Anyway, during a conversation yesterday I mentioned that both DeSantis and Trump had pledged to kick all trans people out of the military. My time in service, continued national defense work, and efforts to return to duty had previously changed his mind on the topic. 3/n
"Really?" he replied. "I hadn't heard that. Doesn't sound like what I'm hearing. But maybe you know more."
"Yeah, I'll send you some links to news articles."
"Ok, but I want AP, Reuters, UPI or something reliable."
"Sure, no problem." I told him. "I'll email it." 4/n
So I went to hunt down some links. I knew I'd seen the remarks. With Trump, it was a little bit difficult because the search engine mostly directed him to stuff he did back in 2017 and 2019.
With DeSantis, it was relegated to local news only, namely coverage of a speech of his by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. Yahoo news picked it up later. 4/n .heraldtribune.com/story/news/pol…
My conclusion was this: both Trump and DeSantis have made anti-transgender rhetoric one of their primary issues in their campaign promises. Military, medical, sports, bathrooms, etc... It pops up in most of their stump speeches. 5/n
Fox News daytime isn't covering it. They're more focused on criticizing Biden for his shoes or bemoaning the Barbie Movie or whatever agitprop is in the 24 hour cycle. Centrist and left media outside the gay press (LA Blade and LGBTQ Nation) aren't covering it either. 6/n
The anti-LGBTQ stuff is red meat for the base. But because no one in the US gives a damn what happens to LGBT people as a 2% minority, people who aren't completely invested in determining the fate of LGBT people in the US are largely oblivious. 7/n
This is just a continuation of a pattern dating to the 80s and the AIDS crisis, or the polling data from 2012 that showed the only people who really had strong feelings about same sex marriage were LGBT people and the super-religious. No one else would vote based on it. 8/n
The problem is, there's far more religious conservatives than there are LGBT people. And they have way more money. And they have an entire political machine devoted to giving them everything they want. Plus the courts. 9/n
While one party is vowing to "eradicate transgenderism" and passing "Millstone Laws" across 20+ states, the American media monoculture simply isn't covering it to the point of it being something anyone but the base (of either party) is aware of. This is a feature, not a bug. 10/n
Outlets like the NYT and Atlantic lack the vision to understand the likelihood and implications of onrushing singe party, right wing religious minoritarian rule (fascism). Talking about what will happen to LGBT people under fascism seems speculative, and no one cares 11/n
I believe that Fox News and others don't highlight Trump and DeSantis' anti-LGBT rhetoric for the same reasons as abortion:
a. It's taken for granted by the base that they are
b. It (generally) makes them look bad
The trans military ban was never supported by a majority. 12/n
Anyway, by my estimation we're at about 1935 when it comes to trans folks, and we're on track for a final solution being implemented around 2029 when Trump gets his third term.
If the public is even aware of it at all, they'll have no idea where it came from. 13/n

I haven't done a post on Ukraine in a while, but enough time has elapsed and a number of really interesting / good articles have come out that there's some interconnected points worth sharing. 1/n
Ukraine has continued to focus on degrading Russian artillery pieces with counter-battery fire. They've also been using Storm Shadow / SCALP to hit logistics, ammunition dumps, and C2 nodes deep in occupied territory. 2/n
What we have seen since the beginning of May is that Ukraine believing that they are destroying far more artillery than other pieces of equipment. Don't get hung up on the (likely exaggerated) numbers in UKR claims: but look at the ratios: 22 artillery claimed to 4 tanks. 3/n
People don't understand the impact of climate change. Take a look at this map.
Anything above 90 degrees F means that outdoor activity is likely to be deadly.
95+, and you cannot survive outdoors, even if you're in the shade doing NOTHING. 1/n
The surface temperature of the Persian Gulf (where I flew) regularly exceeded 95 degrees. Search and Rescue was very much "on the clock" if you went in the water because of hyperthermia.
At a certain point, your body cannot exchange heat fast enough, you overheat, and die. 2/n
"Huhuh, that's why we have air conditioning," say smug people like Ben Shapiro, who completely miss the point, while insisting climate change isn't real, and neither are the laws of physics dealing with heat exchange.
I've been warning for years that we're heading down a dark path that travels through the Supreme Court. Red state AGs claim they only will use it to pursue "legitimate" investigations and not to criminalize women and trans people seeking health care, we know this is baloney. 1/n
So, the Supreme Court will likely have to sort this out. And they'll undoubtedly rule in favor of red states, and take the AGs at their word. HHS and DoJ attorneys will point out how it could be misused, and cause horrible problems later. 2/n losangelesblade.com/2022/04/24/the…
However, we've been down this road before: and the conservative court is always willing to go along with the notion that "we'll deal with that later is we come to it." Then, when they DO come to it, they use the prior ruling as precedent. 3/n damemagazine.com/2023/06/28/the…
A bit of technical news came out yesterday that was a interesting, and bears some discussion. Namely, it appears that Ukraine has converted some S-200 (NATO SA-5 Gammon) missiles to a surface-to-surface (S2S) role. 1/n
This is interesting, because it could theoretically give Ukraine a S2S capability with a longer range than ATACMS. In THEORY. This thread will talk about why "probably not in practice". But there are some potential second order effects. 2/n
The S-200 was introduced in 1967 as an extremely long range surface-to-air system. It's huge: 15,700 lbs, 35 feet long, 487 lb warhead, 130k foot altitude, 300 km range (vs. air targets), and high-Mach speed. It was reportedly meant to counter SR-71s. 3/n missilethreat.csis.org/defsys/s-200-s…
The US will now be providing DPICMs (cluster munitions) to Ukraine. Like the F-16, it's not a wunderwaffe that will win the war, nor be as impactful as HIMARS/GMLRs was. A thread on DPICMs, and other systems that might be even more impactful. 1/n politico.com/news/2023/07/0…
There's pros and cons to the system. Gen @MarkHertling describes his experiences in Gulf I with getting hit with them in a blue-on-blue incident. One major drawback was the 5% dud rate. A 1-2% rate is claimed for more recent production. 2/n
Duds create a significant issue long term, requiring extensive EOD operations. It also poses a problem for advancing Ukrainian troops: clearing out trenches that got hit by DPICMS may actually become even more dangerous in some cases. 3/n
So, I've made accounts at a bunch of places, and I have thoughts on each. So, short thread on the places I've tried, what I'd like to try, and where I'm not interested in going. 1/n
Pros: Familiar. Threads are easy to make. Big user base. Lists. Video/gifs. DMs. Convenience
Cons: Musk. Site failing. Musk. New freemium model. Musk. Unreliable service. Bluecheck system boosting horrible people no one wants to hear from. Musk. 2/n
BlueSky:
Pros: Feels like early Twitter. UI in more intuitive. Less annoying UI than the other sites I've tried. Easy to search for other users. Will improve
Cons: Still very much a Beta product. No DMs. No video / gifs. No lists. Owned by guys almost as bad as Musk. 3/n
