Lab leakers are like “if you carefully read between the lines of this Chinese report it seems Wuhan lab employees may have handled live bats with only THIN rubber gloves”

Meanwhile ten miles away there’s a market where thousands of live animals are directly handled every day
There’s an asymmetry here where elaborate scenarios that maintain the theoretical possibility of a leak are treated as evidence FOR a lab leak, while the absence of absolutely irrefutable proof of a wet market crossover is treated as evidence AGAINST a zoonotic origin
What it comes from, of course, is that lab leakers are not really invested in understanding the origins of COVID. They’re invested in promoting (or at least defending the theoretical plausibility of) a narrative that they find deeply politically appealing
Lab leak theory an argument rooted in faith, not unlike zealots who go to lengths to show, e.g., that Noah’s ark is physically plausible. Doing so would hardly prove the ark’s existence, but it protects their ability to believe in its existence, which is the true end goal

basically everything in this tweet is wrong; US mainstream media should (but won't) be held accountable for constantly promoting this kind of lurid misinformation about a pandemic that killed tens of millions
lab leak theory wasn't popularized through crank right-wing outlets. it was popularized because ostensibly sober journalists and commentators could not resist the contrarian thrill of speculating about it, which gave it the veneer of mainstream credibility it needed to spread
no less than the New York Times published a long, long article from ultra-esteemed science writer Zeynep Tufekci which amounted to a bunch of speculative scenarios in which a lab leak could have occurred. shockingly irresponsible conspiracism posing as hard-hitting journalism

Hundreds of socialists piling into my mentions to tell me that modern segregation was caused by wealthy capitalists but shouting something a hundred thousand times won’t make it true. It simply wasn’t, the world is more complicated than that.
Modern segregation is the product of a combination of discriminatory political decisions (broadly driven by white racism) and the migration patterns of people across metropolitan areas, most of whom are not especially wealthy.
Although pretty much every economic institution plays a role, meaning that, e.g., some wealthy people are making money off segregation, segregation is not being imposed from above by the wealthiest. It’s coming from other structures and supported heavily by cross-class racism

They're literally not. I think we should tax the ultra-wealthy into oblivion but they didn't cause school or housing segregation, housing discrimination, any of it
God forbid we make accurate statements about the world instead of putting everything we dislike into a basket labeled "grr we hate it"
It was white people. Really, across the economic spectrum, although often the most violent opposition to integration came from the white working class

I think most people, including an awful lot of big-time thinkers, engage in politics by identifying groups they consider bad and groups they consider good, and then carefully avoiding any view that would place them in opposition to the good guys or in defense of the bad guys
People will go through the most absurd contortions to make sure they always have their backs to their designated friends and their face towards their designated enemies
It can work okay as a voting heuristic and it works great as a vehicle for RTs and likes but it’s always funny to notice who goes conspicuously absent from the field when their designated friends start doing bad things

sorry for being sincere on the internet, I guess, but I want a politics founded on greater human empathy and less suffering. it hurts to see people hurting and I want less of it. finding excuses to shut ourselves off from that core empathy is the source of most real evil
when a political movement finds excuses to shut off empathy and starts wanting to hurt people for their economic or ideological crimes, I think the movement usually becomes defined by its thirst for human pain and suffering, not whatever economic or ideological vision it has
people are people are people. it’s the hardest thing in the world to know this because then their suffering becomes our suffering and the world becomes so overwhelming you can’t even think about it or look at it and have to find ways to turn away. but we should resist that

bahaha Garland charged Hunter Biden before he did anything about Trump trying to overthrow the government, this is Michelangelo’s David of sweaty, desperate performative neutrality. will never be topped. GOAT
Garland should have been forced to resign a year ago but now he’s untouchable, any effort to dislodge him for being a useless lump will look retaliatory. masterstroke
oh yeah I’m sure they’ll be placated. let’s wait and see
