Alright, my fellow Limbus Company managers, it's time to explain what's happening, and why what's happening with Project Moon is a good way to talk about how different views of extremism are in the East and West. I love PM's games, and seeing this happen is breaking my heart.🧵1/ Image
Background: From what I can gather through Reddit and translators, there are a group of incels/MRAs Korean and Chinese players that sees Limbus Company as a feminist game (because it is). They don't like it, cause they are sexist. For a game company, PM is considered small. 🧵2/
So since its release, this minority group have been gathering "evidence" of the game being bad. Bugs, balance issues, difficulty, you know, normal game stuff, and blowing them up to beyond epic proportion. It all came to a head when PM released Ishmael's newest character ID.🧵3/ Image
If you're wondering what's wrong with that? Nothing. Nothing is wrong. But that's not how the incels saw it. They decided the lack of a swimsuit is somehow radical feminism gone crazy, and decided to go to the company's office to protest. They threatened employees. 🧵4/
There are talks of blood manifestos and death threats. The company's manager is overseas and can't be there to handle the situation. These crazies are calling for the head of the artist. These people are there, at the office, in person. The danger is real. Lives are at stake.🧵5/
So, from what I can tell, the company fired the artist to appease the sexists. And now, the bus is on fire. Western players are calling the company cowards, and Korean incels are furiously turning online forums into manifestos against feminism. Subreddits have gone offline. 🧵6/
Now here's the lesson. I've been dealing with extremism for a decade now, from all across the world. And while extremism from "English" countries like US, UK, and AU are larger in scale, extremism in the east, especially the Asia cluster, is extreme in activity. 🧵7/
How extreme? We're the culture that popularized self-immolation, levels of extreme. The last time someone gone extreme, they murdered a prime minister. Last year. China stole the Dalai Lama. Do you know how crazy that is? They stole the Buddhist pope. 🧵8/
It's in the culture to not make a fuss, but when they do, it's big. So when extremists are at the doors of a game company? I'm scared for the employees. They could really die. So until all the information are out, no, they are not cowards in my eyes. They're just scared.🧵9/
They are not rolling over. They are protecting themselves. Protests aren't common here in parts of Asia. But that's why measures, when taken, are extreme and dangerous. I'm not one to defend companies, but PM is one of the best, most progressive developers I've seen. 🧵10/
So when PM is being harassed by sexists, incels, MRAs, and whatever a-holes, remember this. The devs are the victims right now. YOU DO NOT BLAME VICTIMS. You see those a-holes being sexists? Blame them! They are the bad guys! Get angry at them! They're the one doing crime!🧵11/
These scums of the Earth literally threatened people with death because the game they were playing had some bugs and the character they liked weren't sexualized enough! You want to get mad? Get mad at them! Going to sleep now. When I wake up, I hope things will be better.🧵12/12
BONUS: S. Korea is home to one of the biggest cults in the world, the Moonies, and their membership is almost 6% of the population. Eastern extremism is no joke. It's go big or go home here, and if the (hopefully temporary) firing of an artist means people get to go home, Sure.
