There seems to be some confusion among even well meaning folks that being "anti-war" means not supporting sending weapons to Ukraine.
Let me explain why the exact opposite is true.
A 🧵
1/x
I hate war. I hate it passionately. It makes me feel sick to know of all the truly horrible things human beings have done to other humans. The stories out of Bucha, Mariupol, Syria, and all the other places that have suffered atrocities break my heart.
2/x
I'm pretty sure the only people who hate war more than I do are the people living through one. The people whose lives have already been turned upside down, and who have suffered grave losses. I strongly support doing anything to avoid getting caught up in a war.
3/x
So what's the best way to avoid having to fight a war? It's combination of two things:
1) Have the biggest, baddest military on the planet. Be the 800 pound gorilla that no one wants to mess with.
and
2) Bring friends.
4/x
No matter how badass you are, there's always going to be some drunk bully in the bar that wants to fight, and will keep harassing you. But if you're there with 12 friends who are clearly lined up behind you, the bully will think twice about fighting all of you.
5/x
That's what NATO is. Anything you hear about NATO "threatening" Russia is garbage Russian propaganda. NATO is a defensive alliance. They don't start wars, they just line up behind us so no one else dares to either.
6/x
The only thing NATO threatens is Russia's ability to attack and kill it's neighbors without serious consequences. And if Ukraine were already in NATO Putin would have never dared to attack it.
7/x
NATO has only had to go to war once, and it was to defend the US. And I'm not sure it was even appropriate for us to ask them to at that time, but regardless, they showed up. For us to blow them off now (like Trump and Putin want) would be both stupid and immoral.
8/x
Being weak and saying you don't want to fight will not keep you out of a war. In pretty much every war ever, 50% or more of the parties involved don't want to be in a war. But there's always some toxic bully like Russia that doesn't give them a choice.
9/x
Not having a strong military, and avoiding military conflicts that aren't taking place on our own soil will not keep us out of a war. It will make us weaker and more likely to be attacked. Nothing attracts a bully more than looking vulnerable.
10/x
So if you really hate war and don't want to have to fight one, you will support our military, you will support NATO, and you will support Ukraine, which is fighting for all of us so we don't have to.
/end
PS:
Just in case any of you have been confused by all the gaslighting on this site, there is only one party that's responsible for this war.
Russia attacked Ukraine. Russia bombs, tortures, rapes & kill Ukrainians. Russia has a long history of attacking & killing its neighbors.
A centuries long history of attacking their neighbors, as their neighbors will attest to.
The US did not start this war. The US did not attack anyone. Ukraine did not start this war or attack anyone. Ukraine is just defending themselves because it's the only way they'll survive.
Very few issues in this world have the moral clarity of this one. Not everything is as simple, or as black & white as this is.
Russia started this war, & they are 100% responsible for it. No one else.
The war ends the minute Russia goes home & stops trying to destroy Ukraine.

Here's a familiar story. You guys heard this one before?
Young idealistic people enthusiastically vote for the party that offers them progress & things they believe in.
A couple of years later, they're outraged & disappointed because they've only gotten part of what they want.
They have no concept of how extremely difficult and time consuming it is to make changes in a democracy, or how truly historic recent changes are. And they are oblivious to the inevitable backlash change always brings.
They expected instant change, and now they're mad.
They ignore the people who've been fighting this fight for decades, and know how freaking hard every single one of these small battles has been to win, and they dismiss the people trying to explain this to them because those people are old, and just don't understand.
"The plan that Giuliani and Trump put into operation was simple. Giuliani sent me to collect compromising information that the Eastern European oligarchs had on Hunter Biden’s activities in Ukraine to use against Joe Biden."
It was my job to convince the new Ukrainian government to announce an official investigation into Hunter Biden. If they didn’t, the U.S. would not send Trump or Mike Pence to Zelensky’s inauguration, threatening Zelensky’s domestic stature and his ability to stand up to Putin.
Trump also paused much needed military aid for Ukraine while he tried to get Zelensky to open the Biden investigation.
Trump didn’t care if this made Ukraine vulnerable to Russia, which had annexed Crimea from the country in 2014.
Gosh @MSNCB, let's spend the entire day speculating about a speech that hasn't happened yet, and polls for an election nearly two years away. A whole two minutes for the probably tens of thousands dead in Turkey and Syria is surely enough, right?
Yes this is sarcasm. JFC.🤦♀️🙄
If anyone thinks this is hyperbolic or an exaggeration, it's not. Since I turned the news on it's been segment after segment of drivel about tonight's speech and terrible polling, and a brief two minute mention of the earthquake and victims.
This is journalistic malpractice.
And not a single word about Ukraine yet today.
A speech that hasn't happened yet that anyone can watch is not the big news of the day, and treating it like it is insults our intelligence, and makes you look petty and shallow.
You guys, I'm starting to panic about all the ads I'm not seeing. Not sure what the DNC is up to. I don't have the skills to make videos, so this is a call out to all of you who do: can we all get on the same page and make this happen?
We need to stop worrying about individual races and run against the whole party, with the same consistent messages. These are the ones I think we should focus on. Crazy culture war extremism, the myth that the GOP is better for the economy, fascism & the plot to take away votes.
First the crazy culture war stuff. Where are the ads warning, "THEY'RE COMING FOR YOUR BIRTH CONTROL!"? Yes we should go there. They would. Can our research Twitter folks dig us up the examples of elected officials who've said this?
When Nigerian environmental lawyer Chima Williams launched a lawsuit against oil giant Shell plc, he did not envisage a 13-year battle that would lead to a landmark ruling and land him a prestigious environmental award.
Shell Nigeria was eventually held liable for the oil spills and ordered to pay damages to the farmers in a January, 2021, ruling by the Court of Appeal of the Hague. SPDC was also ordered to carry out an intensive clean-up of the damage to the communities. edition.cnn.com/2022/05/25/afr…
