Many people have been coerced and manipulated into acting against their own safety by choice, and refuse to admit it.
Cults do the same, manipulating members into dangerous or harmful acts.
Let's build a mental model for how to engage with people in this mindset.
A thread 🧵
What makes normalcy bias so effective is that people feel like they independently reached the conclusion that COVID is mild.
This position is only possible by having authorities withhold crucial data.
It is further reinforced by peer pressure from trusted acquaintances.
Then, once the falsehood had set in, politicians and employers began forcefully removing precautions that had been previously set up.
This adds coercion to the tools being applied against individuals, where they had to choose between livelihoods and safety.
For many parents, it is too horrific to contemplate that they made the wrong decision and sent their children into harm's way at school or daycare.
Being wrong would require them to admit that they were responsible for long term damage to their children (and themselves).
If you're trying to convince people that they were wrong, you're barking up the wrong tree.
Instead, the best thing you can do is to continue asking questions, for those willing to listen.
Offer occasional tidbits of evidence to sow the seeds of doubt in their normalcy bias.
It's going to be extremely challenging for many in the next wave.
Severe outcomes will become obvious, as many people are essentially unvaccinated (due to waning), with a variant more likely to cause hospitalizations.
Many people will soon be shocked by major infections. Mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, aunts, uncles, and cousins end up in the hospital, become disabled, or die.
Faith in normalcy will waver.
Keep posing questions. Keep sowing the seeds of doubt in those willing to listen.
I'll leave you with the words of Dr. @Janja_Lalich:
"I think everyone in a cult has doubts... and they're not able to express them... The way I see it is they put them on a shelf in the back of their head... hopefully at one point the shelf gets heavy enough that it breaks..."
"And at that moment, they'll realize that something's wrong. They may not identify it as a cult, but they'd think this is not a group that's in their best interests, and they probably should think about leaving."

For those that aren't familiar with Novavax, it is the only COVID-19 vaccine on the market that has been demonstrated to inhibit nasal replication of SARS-CoV-2, as recently as BA.2.
It also has increased durability in immune response than mRNA.
Leading up to the FDA VRBPAC meeting, I asked you to leave your comments on the docket. I'm happy to say that at least 500 of the 700+ comments were about Novavax.
This groundswell of advocacy would not have been possible without your efforts. Thank you!
The FDA is meeting soon for fall variant selection. Public comments are open until TOMORROW.
We are taking this opportunity to demand broader access to Novavax COVID-19 vaccines, especially for children.
Why do we need more access to Novavax?
Thread 🧵
We need you to submit public comments to the FDA, demanding greater Novavax access.
Last time we did this for the ACIP/CDC meeting, we got so many comments (~600) that they were forced to bring up Novavax during the meeting. Your comments will be heard!
In the dead of night, the U.S. Senate voted to approve the short-sighted debt ceiling increase deal.
Democrats are pretending that they averted a crisis, but in reality they've manufactured a new problem that's going to make the lives of millions of Americans worse.
A thread 🧵
Increasing the debt ceiling doesn't guarantee that our economy will remain afloat.
In fact, it was only days after increasing the debt ceiling in 2011 that the US had its credit rating downgraded, precipitating further collapse.
