1. LANGUAGE OF CHRISTIAN IMPERIALISM

It first came to this country in the company of Portuguese pirates in the opening years of the 16th century. Some of these pirates were dressed as priests and friars and introduced themselves as missionaries of Jesus Christ.
2. It was this latter tribe which trumpeted that

1) The only True God had sent his Only-begotten Son, Jesus, to atone for the sins of all mankind by dying on the Cross in Jerusalem in 33 A.D.;
3. 2) Human history before the Crucifixion of Jesus was an era of darkness and the light of divinity descended on earth exactly on that date;
4. 3) Mankind became divided into Christians and heathens after the advent of Jesus, and the Christians were under a divine obligation to wage a constant crusade against the Heathens;
5. 4) All Christians everywhere were united in the Catholic Church, the Body as well the Bride of Jesus and the holy Mother of Mankind, which recognised no national divisions or distinctions;
6. 5) The Only True God had mandated the entire earth including India to
the Catholic Church which had thus inherited an inalienable right to liberate India, as all other lands, from the horrors of Heathenism;
7. 6) The victory of the Catholic Church over India as elsewhere, was
inevitable and Christian soldiers and missionaries should endeavour to
expedite that end;
8. 7) The Only True God, in his infinite mercy, had forefeited the lives,
liberties, properties and honour of the Gentoo (Hindu) heathers and the
Catholic Church was authorised to demolish their temples,
9. to smash their idols, to burn their scriptures, to persecute their priests, to close down their schools and seminaries, to prohibit their public
celebrations, to sequester their movable and immovable possessions, to
separate them from their children,
10. to convert their women into concubines for Christian soldiers and priests, to exile those sections of their population which proved recalcitrant, and to massacre those who offered armed resistance;
11. 8) The Gentoo heathens had lived for long in the sin and shame of polytheism and pantheism and their crimes deserved drastic punishment.

Every Hindu politician or pen-pusher who aspires to pass the test of Secularism has to

1. proclaim that Islam stands for equality and human brotherhood;
2. celebrate the prophet's birthday with fanfare and throw an iftār dinner
at the end of Ramzan;
3. attend Urs of sufis and Urdu mushāirās;
4. support the claim of Urdu to be the second state language in all states
where Muslims are in a minority;
5. admire whatever passes for Islamic art and architecture;
6. relish Muslim cooking and appreciate Muslim dress and demeanour;
7. abuse Israel and applaud Arab countries.

He should also keep quiet or look the other way when Muslims
1. breed like rats;
2. refuse to give modern education to their children;

1. Western imperialism was a multi-dimensional drive from the very beginning. Its military power which conquered and occupied many countries was visible from afar. What remained hidden, except for those who looked deeper, were some other strands.
2. Political domination had no meaning for the Western imperialists unless it could be converted into hard cash through commerce.
3. Commerce was bound to remain limited to a few consumer goods unless the enslaved people were westernized and made to look towards Western industries for satisfying their new needs. Christianization of conquered countries was one of the ways of their westernization.

1. The Catholic Mission in India had a share in the harvest of converts which the recurring famines brought to Christianity in the 19th century. The British government saw to it that famine relief in most places was handled by the missionaries.
2. The famines also provided a lot of orphans for whom all Christian missions have been looking always and everywhere. There were also considerable gains among the forest-dwellers.
3. Christians of all hues were spreading the yarn that the tribal people were not a part of Hindu society, and that if Christianity came to their rescue from “ignorance and poverty,” the Hindus could have no legitimate objection.

1. The missionaries had sensed from the very first that it was the Brahmin who stood in their way of breaking the barriers of Hindu society. But it was St. Xavier who made anti-Brahminism the central theme of his missionary thrust.
2. “These are,” he wrote, “the most perverse people in the world... they never tell the truth, but think of nothing but how to tell subtle lies and to deceive the simple and ignorant people...the poor simple people do exactly what the Brahmins tell them...
3. If there were no Brahmins in the area, all Hindus would accept conversion to our faith.” (Quoted by Stephen Neill, in his History of Christianity in India, p.146).

1. Frustrated on all sides, the missionaries advised their masters, the Pope and the king of Portugal,
2. ...that the only way left for imposing Christianity firmly on Indian soil was the Rigour of Mercy to be employed wherever the Portuguese exercised absolute power over their subjects.
3. This was a euphemism for the use of force for the spread of Christianity. The Pope agreed and the king of Portugal issued orders accordingly. Once again, it is a very well-documented story.

1. Muhammad was to occupy the same position in Islamic lore as Jesus Christ had come to hold in early Christian theology. Muhammad, too, was hailed as the Mir, sole monarch, and Pir, supreme pontiff, in permanent charge of the material and spiritual welfare of mankind.
2. But Islam was able to escape a debate between the State and the Church because, in its history, the State took shape quite some time before a theological fraternity could emerge or get consolidated.
3. Secondly, Muhammad had become the sole monarch of Arabia before he died, besides having been the sole source of Islamic dogma. The very first Khalifa who succeeded Muhammad inherited not only the Prophetís spiritual authority but also his political might.
