You see, Asturias is one of the world's best-kept secrets.

And well deserves your visit.
In fact, I'm sure this thread barely does the region justice.

Let me know in the comments what I missed 😆
And if you do go, consider visiting between June and September for optimal weather.

It can get pretty rainy in the north of Spain.
Now to end with a quote from renowned Asturian chef and restauranteur, José Andrés: Image
"Asturias is really, to a degree it’s a land of plenty. But to a degree it’s not. It’s not what you want when you want it. It’s when the land wants to give it to you. The river, the mountains, the sea... You have to respect the land first, and maybe then...
the land wants to give you something. In Asturias, many of the restaurants you’re gonna go to you’re gonna get this feeling. This is something beyond just the plate in front of you. It’s the understanding of the happiness that hardship gives you."

Today, Spain celebrates the Canary Islands.

One of the most fascinating regions on Earth.

It’s hard to do a place like this justice, but here’s my best shot... 🧵 Image
When people picture Spain, they think of flamenco, paella, and mainland cities.

But 1,000 miles southwest, off the coast of Africa, lie a series of islands that feels like an entirely different planet. Image
Tenerife is the largest island — and home to Mount Teide, Spain’s tallest peak at 3,718m.

It sits inside the most-visited national park in Europe. Image

Can a building impose cosmic order on the chaos of the world?

Philip II of Spain thought so.

El Escorial was his answer — a palace, monastery, and royal tomb inside the largest Renaissance building in the world... 🧵 Image
Built in the 16th century by Philip II, El Escorial was a project like no other:

To commemorate victory over France. Honor a martyred saint. Project Spain’s global power.

And serve as the king’s personal sanctuary. Image
Construction began in 1563 and was completed in just 21 years — lightning fast for its time.

Over 1,500 workers were on-site at its peak.

The granite came from nearby mountains — quarried, hauled, and carved into imperial order. Image

The year was 722.

Exactly 1,303 years ago today.

A band of rebels made their last stand in the mountains of Asturias — sparking a resurgence that would shape European history forever… 🧵 Image
A decade earlier, the Muslim armies of the Umayyad Caliphate had crossed into Iberia from North Africa.

In just a few years, they crushed the Visigothic Kingdom — defeating King Roderic and claiming nearly the entire peninsula. Image
But not completely.

While most of Iberia submitted, one man did not: Pelayo (or Pelagius), a former Visigothic noble who refused to accept defeat.

He vanished into the misty mountains of Asturias and began to fight back. Image

Long before the Enlightenment, an intellectual revolution was already underway.

Rewriting the rules of war, empire, and economy.

This is the story of Salamanca. The oldest university in the Hispanic world... 🧵 Image
Set in the golden sandstone city of Salamanca, the university’s Plateresque façade glows in the Castilian sun.

But what happened inside those walls is what made it legendary. Image
It began as a humble cathedral school in the 12th century.

By royal charter in 1218, King Alfonso IX transformed it into a “studium generale” — a place where anyone could come to study.

By 1255, it had papal approval and international prestige. Image

Think you know Spain?

Here are 20 things Spaniards say foreigners don't understand about their country... 🧵 Image
1. "That total strangers can talk to each other in the streets as if they were friends or relatives. A friend of mine worked for 20 years in Brussels and when she came back to Spain she told me: 'You never feel lonely in Spain, even if you're on your own.'" Image
2. "We stare. Unapologetically. Not in a creepy way, more like “free street theatre.” We’ll clock your outfit, hold eye contact just long enough to make a Brit panic. It’s not rude. Basically a CCTV camera with opinions and zero subtlety." Image

France gets the glory. Italy gets the flair.

But on this International Wine Day, it’s time for Spain to get the love it deserves.

Here’s to 3,000 years of winemaking... 🧵🍷 Image
Spain’s love affair with wine began over 3,000 years ago.

The Phoenicians first brought vines to southern Spain around 1100 BCE.

The Romans expanded it. And after the fall of the empire, monks kept the tradition alive. Image
Today, Spain stands as a true wine superpower — with more land under vine than any country on Earth.

Over 1.2 million hectares, making up nearly 13% of the world’s vineyard area.

And ranking third in global wine production, just behind Italy and France. Image
