Protect the children! As they had back to school, a reminder that covid is not benign, even in children.

Very incomplete data set (>1.13 people have died in US and this only accounts for 996,981), but still we see 2,292 deaths in children 17 and under.🧵

Deaths by age. 2,292 deaths in 0-17 yo
Covid is now a leading cause of death in all age groups and the only infectious cause in most. Most children with severe outcomes have no underlying condition or common ones like asthma, obesity or being born premature. Of course, death isn't the only bad outcome we worry about.
It's worth noting that we have a much bigger blind spot when it comes to understanding the disease process and progress in children because most of the research has focused on adults. Children are not small adults! We still have a lot to learn.

Don't forget about MIS-C, a very serious multi-system inflammatory condition that can happen several weeks after the initial COVID infection, even if that initial infection was mild. Many of these children need support in the ICU. Very difficult on child and family. Common symptoms of MIS-C: fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, neck pain, rash, bloodshot eyes, feeling extra tired. Not all children will have the same symptoms.
How common is MIS-C? We don't know because reporting from the local health jurisdictions to CDC is completely voluntary. But there have been 9,499 reported cases, including 79 deaths. Something tells me the geographic distribution is related to reporting, not true incidence.
9499 cases and 79 deaths from MISC reported by health departments
Map showing most MIS-C cases are in CA followed by Texas
The median age of patients with MIS-C was 9 years old, and half were between 5 and 13.

57% of children with reported MIS-C where race was known were Black or Latino. We do not know why this very significant disproportionality is happening. covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tra…
Keep a close eye on children in the months-weeks after covid infection! Not just for MIS-C but also long and post covid. Long covid is likely happening at a similar rate in kids. Kids are supposed to have decades of quality life ahead of them and have more time for reinfections.
Children under 18 are 2.5 times more likely to be *newly diagnosed with diabetes* in the months after COVID infection compared to those without COVID, and even to those with other respiratory infections before the pandemic. This is not the flu!
https://t.co/75DMmKujapcdc.gov/diabetes/libra…
People younger than 18 with COVID-19 were up to 2.5 times more likely to be newly diagnosed with diabetes in the months after infection than those without COVID-19 and those who had other respiratory infections before the pandemic
All children should have a physician visit BEFORE resuming sports/physical activity or within 2-4 weeks of a positive COVID test, whichever is sooner. We don’t want kids to return to sports prematurely, especially given the risk of myocarditis. AAP's Return to Play algorithm: Algorithm physicians should follow for sports clearance post covid
You can't get MIS-C, long covid, post covid events, etc. if you don't get covid. Avoiding infection and reinfection is the best strategy! Do what you can to assess and advocate for clean indoor air at school. Wear a high-quality mask, eat outside. Keep sick kids home. Best practices - vaccinate, mask, gather outside, ventilation/filtration, monitor indoor air quality, limit time and mixing indoors, wash hands
When a child gets covid, please let them rest and fully recover, and keep a close eye on them in the subsequent weeks to months.

I really do worry that our younger generations will wonder why we didn't do more to protect them. We can and must do better by our children. 🙏🏾❤️
I review this topic and cover the current covid uptick in this week's People's Health Briefing.
One more thing to note: the vast majority of children will not require outpatient treatment for covid, but some could benefit. Make a treatment plan ahead of time with your pediatrician or specialist for high-risk children. Outpatient treatment for SARS-COV-2: Paxlovid for 12+, Remdesivir and convalescent plasma for all ages.

There appears to be an uptick of Acute Necrotizing Encephalitis among children this flu season. We've had reports here in No. Cal. Others out of Boston. We're piecemealing things together because there's no active surveillance for ANE, and CDC can't communicate with partners. MEDPAGETODAY Special Reports Exclusives Neurologic Complications of Flu in Kids May Be Up This Year Experts are talking about a potential small increase in a very rare condition by Kristina Fiore, Director of Enterprise & Investigative Reporting, MedPage Today February 13, 2025 Last Updated February 14, 2025
This rare but terrifying condition progresses rapidly, causing brain swelling, and can quickly lead to coma and death. We're going to be increasingly relying on medical providers, counties, and states to help us understand what's happening, as CDC seems to be in the dark.
"Normally we would have communicated quite a bit with our clinical and other partners right now, but we can't talk to any of them because we have been ordered to stand down by the new executive branch administration" -CDC source

Make it make sense.

"There are so many cattle passing away from avian influenza that the rendering trucks are backed up...We are desperately overwhelmed at this point."

Cows w/H5N1 left exposed with no warning signs or biosecurity precautions.

"The footage was deemed too graphic for publication." 'Shocking': Bird-Flu Infected Cattle Dumped at California Roadside Published Oct 11, 2024 at 1:33 PM EDT
I do not understand how this is OK. Seems like we are just asking for H5N1 to take hold! We're helping it! Playing with fire.

Why is the Western region getting so slammed with cvid? Wastewater concentration is now higher than our winter surge and climbing. The "explanations" talk about summer surge being because it's too hot, we're all moving indoors but I don't think the Western region is the hottest. Covid in Wastewater Very high and increasing. Western region is the highest
I mean you can't tell me Oklahoma is less hot than Washington state. Image
And in California it's projected to still be growing 😭

To the many getting c19 for the 1st time:
- Sorry to hear it! Hoping for your fast recovery.
- Good job delaying this long! We have treatment, know more about limiting household spread, etc.
- Go easy on yourself, physically and mentally. Stress & worry don't help the healing!🧵
- Thank you for your vigilance telling your contacts. This is how we limit spread and harm. Too few are doing this now.
- If you choose to post about it, I appreciate you for sharing as it may help others or even yourself. But don't feel obligated, and be ready for criticism.
Some will say you're overboard for the precautions you've taken to date. Others will say you failed and must've done something wrong to get it. Ignore. You've made many sacrifices. Keep up the good work. Improve where you can, and do what you can to delay a 2nd infection. 🙏🏾❤️

You hate to see it. As we head into a summer wave, 65+ have the highest proportion of ED visits, followed by 0-11 year olds, who have extremely low vaccine uptake and virtually no available outpatient treatment. After Covid, children should rest and check in with their doctor. 🧵 Current proportion of ED visits for covid. Highest is 75+, then 65-74, then 0-11 yo
In fact, the AAP recommends ALL children have a post covid consultation and be *cleared to return to sports*‼️

After a moderate case (4+ days fever; 7+ days other symptoms), they need physical exam, Amer Heart Assn 14 element assessment, and an EKG *before return to sports*. Amer Acad of Pediatrics Return to Play after covid infection guidelines
Avoid exacerbating potential heart/lung issues! Be on alert for chest pain, out-of-proportion shortness of breath, palpitations, passing out.

Children with a severe acute case (ICU, MIS-C) must stay out of sports 3-6 mos and be cleared by a pediatric cardiologist before return.

DISGUSTING. While we were breaking ourselves trying to keep folks safe, the US govt was nefariously undermining our efforts with a morally bankrupt psyop campaign targeting South Asians, Filipinos and Muslims, using hundreds of fake social media accounts on multiple platforms. 🧵 A REUTERS INVESTIGATION Pentagon ran secret anti-vax campaign to undermine China during pandemic
“'We weren’t looking at this from a public health perspective,' said a senior military officer involved in the program. 'We were looking at how we could drag China through the mud.'”
This effort eroded trust not only in Sinovac (only vax many had access to) but vaccine generally.
This despite the fact that US played hardball with our vax pricing! “'We didn’t do a good job sharing vaccines with partners,' a senior U.S. military officer directly involved in the campaign in Southeast Asia told Reuters. 'So what was left to us was to throw shade on China’s.'”
