Would love assistance from a “it’s just a cold” person during my voice lessons with distraught teenage students who think their voices might be gone forever bc they have been severely affected by a recent Covid infection (which delayed a musical & caused dysphonia in TWO leads)
Look my students in the eyes, sing with their inflamed voices. Tell them it’s just a cold. Tell them their distress doesn’t matter. Tell them they can expect this to happen repeatedly.

Nothing makes me more upset, actually. These kids DONT ‘HAVE THE TOOLS’ to protect themselves
Ofc they weren’t tested for Covid, but what other voice snatching virus that spreads through casts (the director also was out for a while) is going around in JULY? NONE. I HAVE BEEN TEACHING SINCE 2011, PERFORMING SINCE CHILDHOOD, and NO. THIS. IS. NOT. “NORMAL”.
I have NEVER had so many students affected by hoarseness like this. Never. 1 or 2 kids a semester, MAYBE. Now, every single student has had a turn on the dysphonia ferris wheel.

Go ahead, tell them it’s just a cold. Tell them their voice will be fine. Lie to them for me.
Some bounce back quickly. Some take months.

The catalyst to this thread has been dysphonic since early late June. I’m starting to get worried. They’re not getting consistent cord closure & their speaking voice is breathy/weak. A month of distress. Tell them it’s fine. Go ahead.
^late June. I wrote early July first and forgot to delete it. I think they got sick in June, though.
But yeah. It actually makes me viscerally upset. No vocalist deserves this. And it’s a risk EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. That you sing with other people now. A reality I never thought possible. Just awful.

FYI for anyone medical who follows me — if it persists I will suggest a scope
I don’t think this particular student has anything more serious than persistent inflammation, but any voice teacher worth their salt will absolutely refer to an ENT/otolaryngologist/vocologist when it sounds like something else. I think she might need a scope though 😩
(And ofc it’s so ironic/horrible that getting scoped for diagnosis &treatment with how lax infection control procedures are in MEDICAL SETTINGS could put students at risk of ANOTHER infection. Like hi why am I a voice teacher taking infections more seriously than hospitals????)
Literally just talking about this earlier so I’m gonna post this again bc people (ESPECIALLY LOOKING AT YOU PODCASTERS - STOP RECORDING THRU DYSPHONIA PLZ) should know what their instrument/money maker actually looks like and what the actual damage can be. A poster of different vocal pathologies (they all look red & inflamed): Carcinoma-in-situ Squamous cell carcinoma Vocal fold paresis Vocal fold paralysis Acute laryngitis Reflux disease Nodules Polyp
@millionthmatt It’s even more worrying when it’s a really good one. Their muscles are strong. They KNOW their voices. They bounce back faster when tissues are healthy. So it makes me MORE concerned.
The whole poster for anyone curious (it is v handy). But also, since we’re here, take a gander at how teeny tiny vocal folds are. v smol. And they need to be very wet & smooth to vibrate v fast to even speak. This is why when they get puffy & irritated, they don’t work v good! A larynx anatomy poster with anterior, posterior, and side views of the larynx & surrounding tissues/organs, as well as a top down view, neck muscle view, and vibration diagram. A scale with male, female, and child vocal folds is shown.
The real life poster is handy because the size of the cis female vocal fold circle is literally the same circumstance as my pinky finger. The pinky nail is also a good approximation of how thin the vfs are too (so I was told by my grad school teacher so plz correct me if wrong)
Check the healthy vocal folds in the bottom left corner for comparison. They’re supposed to be bright, mostly white, and MOIST. Here’s a classic vid shown in probably all vocal pedagogy classes since it was put on YouTube 12 years ago lol

It’s so funny how the trolls never come out for these kind of posts, huh
TLDR please wear a respirator & heavily ventilate when singing in groups. I find it particularly gross that music ed world commissioned studies that proved high risk of aerosol transmission & established rehearsal protocols, & then yeeted them to the wayside in lieu of “normal”
Citation. P much every major music ed org in the USA came together, kinda did it for a while, & then went omg such normallll like everyone else (despite repeated disruptions to music bc of repeated & obvious sickness caused by superspreader rehearsals)

smtd.colostate.edu/reducing-bioae…
I have experienced a choral superspreader of 28 in May 2022. But, I was w/ an adult org still monitoring Covid which is different than the K-12 school/community music scene, who have given up. Just bc we aren’t documenting them doesn’t mean kid ensembles aren’t superspreaders 😩
@CynthiaElise61 She can phonate to high C, but uncomfortably. If it were paresis, this would be unlikely. I’m thinking the vocal folds are too puffy & inflamed to vibrate that fast. Lots of air getting through too. Paresis would sound different. There would be loss or gaps
Omg circumference sorrrrryyyy

Anecdotes aren’t science, but I’d like to reshare my experience with a choral superspreader of 28 people back in May 2022, as it provides pretty solid experience that a good mask works. The church we rehearsed in was purposefully updated w/ ventilation to the outside.
The ventilation was on during this rehearsal, IIRC bc I looked up to check, seeing as ~2 weeks prior, citing CDC happy green map guidelines, the choir had dropped our masks required to recommended. They had duckbill N95 they would hand out for rehearsal when it was required.
Surprise surprise, with about 50 ppl in the room, about 40 unmasked, we started getting emails reporting positive cases on Wednesday. Rehearsal was that Monday. The first case? The only teenager in the group, who was asymptomatic & maskless SINGING IN THE PEW DIRECTLY BEHIND ME

Trying to listen to part 2 of the Pam Smart Case on morbid and one of the host is clearly inflamed (again) and has cleared her throat 5x since I started counting 5 mins ago. Podcasters — stop fucking around with your voices if you’d like to keep your money maker.

I don’t think some people over 40 understand how fed up millennials & gen z truly are. There is no future for us. We have been used as political bargaining chips our entire lives while getting nothing in return. There is historical precedent to where this will eventually lead.
Everything is way too expensive. We all work constantly, often multiple jobs. We have no savings accounts, pensions, or plans for retirement (lol). Many of us still rent at exorbitant prices. The planet is desperately trying to warn us to stop this lifestyle. And yet, here we are
Millions of us have unpayable student loans we took under explicit pressure from older generations. They quite literally helped scam us & set us up for wealth extraction for LIFE for something they OFTEN GOT FOR FREE, and wonder why we are so pissed. We are debt slaves to the gov

Just found out that my grad school has a masters of music ed with Massachusetts licensure available andddddd where was this 10 years ago 😫 if only k-12 weren’t currently a Covid cesspool and falling apart and mostly still fighting for music to just exist in schools
Maybe one day when the world isn’t exploding, but good to know the option is there now
Oh apparently the band director in my town (which just cut the theater program citing Covid under enrollment) is on the faculty there now. Convenient. We went to the same undergrad lol music academia is the smallest of worlds

With no consideration for protection of the physical/mental health of the musicians on stage performing for them
It’s just so annoying the loop of “I NEED to go to a concert but CANT wear a mask bc it cramps my vibe!!!” Well baby it really cramps your favorite bands vibe if they’re too sick to play their instruments or sing bc you keep infecting them for “your mental health” I’m so over itt
Much like servers/retail, musicians are in the awkward position of needing to interact with the public to make any money. Do I think more should mask & advocate for protections? Of course, but musicians are one of the most exploited gig work industry & heavy pressure to conform

As expected, tears of the kingdom has been devastating to my capacity for being productive since it’s such effective escapism for my persistent burn out I’ve been feeling since about December, currently working on increasing my schedule demands soon but it’s been hard 😫😮‍💨
So sorry to anyone who follows me on here who has had recent interest in my studio — it’s been hard trying to figure out spots in my schedule with my 3 day/week part time jewelry job & accommodating everyone’s time zones, while also not working 10-12 hour days every day
Art under capitalism is such a doozy
