UPDATE: Judge Chutkan gives Trump's team until Monday at 5pm to respond to Jack Smith's motion for protective order.

Ah another Friday ambush by Jack Smith seeking a strict protective order on Trump without conferring with defense.

He just did this in classified docs case--Judge Cannon called BS on Smith. I doubt Chutkan will: Image
Smith's top prosecutor Tom Windom (tw) prepared protective order in J6 case similar to classified docs case--which is insane.

Trump's lawyer (John) disputes it, says their proposed order is standard in DC. Windom says no dice--adds Truth Social post and files late Friday.

Smith’s allegation is laughably weak—hearsay at best—with a brief paragraph of an alleged exchange btw 2 Trump employees. Trump’s name isn’t specifically mentioned…

BREAKING VIDEO: For 2 1/2 years, Capitol Police officer Aquilino Gonell has lied about injuries he sustained on Jan 6.

He has testified under oath and in federal court proceedings that he suffered near-death injuries.

Judge Aileen Cannon set a May 2024 trial date for Trump in the classified documents case.

Excerpts here from court hearing on Tuesday indicate Cannon's thinking on the matter as well as offers clue as to how Trump's lawyers will proceed.

DOJ has 1,545 pages of classified material incl files from NARA, the May subpoena production, and Mar-a-Lago raid. Trump's lawyers can see about 80%, DOJ said, under interim security clearances. (Full clearance will take 2 months)

NEW: Trump's lawyers filed first major motion last night, ask court to delay setting a trial date for numerous reasons. Judge Cannon set August date; Jack Smith sought delay until Dec 2023.

Team Trump:
Trump cites unprecedented nature of case as one reason to delay trial: extensive discovery incl alleged "classified docs" which have yet to be produced to defense. (DOJ/Smith pulling every trick to keep docs concealed incl opposition to special master)

Statute on right:

Lots of claims Trump wants trial delayed bc he's running for president (that's one reason of many)
Biggest issue is amount of evidence that Smith's office is just starting to produce.

Smith also requiring Trump's lawyers to get security clearances, which could take 2 months
