Apparently it’s the Conservatives’ ‘Small Boats Week’, so before we get more empty pledges, gimmick announcements that go nowhere, ramped up rhetoric and false claims of progress in tackling their chaos, let’s take a look at their record 👇🏼
1/ Their policies aren’t working & Tory boats chaos has got worse. 4yrs ago Ministers promised to end crossings in 6 months, but number is up twentyfold since then. In Jan, Rishi Sunak pledged to “stop the boats” - but crossings in June/July were even higher than last year
2/ Criminal gangs are being let off. Annual profits of people smugglers have soared from £1m 4 yrs ago to nearer £200m today yet convictions are down 36% on 2010.

Labour has time & again proposed stronger actions to crack down on gangs but Tories have repeatedly voted against
3/ The asylum backlog is growing. In December, Rishi Sunak pledged to abolish the backlog of initial decisions by the end of 2023. Yet decisions are still almost 9,000 lower than 2015 & the backlog has soared to a record 173,000
4/ Asylum decisions are falling. The Government has been artificially withdrawing asylum claims to get the backlog down, but total asylum decisions minus withdrawals are down by 18% quarter-to-quarter since December Image
5/ Caseworker numbers are down. The PM pledged to double the number of asylum caseworkers to 2500, but since then the total number actually fell between January and May.
6/ Hotel use is UP. Rishi Sunak promised to end hotel use, yet the Home Office Permanent Secretary says hotel use is still going up & new hotels are still being opened. A staggering £6 million of taxpayers’ money is being spent on hotels every day due to Tory mismanagement.
7/ Costs are spiralling astronomically. Contracts have been badly managed, barges, bases & marquees are all in addition to hotels not instead & average nightly costs per person are up sixfold in five years. Home Office estimates if Tory chaos continues it will cost £11bn
8/ New laws are a con. Since Nationality & Borders Act 2022 passed, boat crossings increased & of the 24k people considered inadmissible for removal to 3rd countries, only 23 were removed.

Latest Tory law will make backlog & chaos even worse by cancelling all asylum decisions
9/ Unworkable, unethical Rwanda plan has unravelled. UK taxpayers have written £140m cheques to Rwanda - yet Govt failed to do basic checks on safe country status. Even if it gets off ground, court says it will only be a few hundred people. And it risks increasing trafficking
10/ Returns of failed asylum cases have collapsed. Instead of system which supports refugees & returns those who aren’t, returns of failed asylum seekers are down 70% since 2010, safe routes like Afghan ResettlementScheme aren’t working & aid to help refugees in regions was cut
The Tory asylum chaos is getting worse. All they do is ramp up the rhetoric & offer gimmicks instead of getting a grip. Labour has a serious plan to clear the backlog & chaos, end hotel use & tackle dangerous crossings that are undermining border security & putting lives at risk Image

Today @Keir_Starmer & I launched Labour’s mission on crime to restore confidence in policing & criminal justice & halve serious violence;

*to halve knife crime
*to halve violence against women & girls
*to restore confidence in police
*to reverse the collapse in crimes solved
That starts with;
- 13,000 more neighbourhood police & PCSOs
- overhaul police standards
- youth mentors
- new law to crackdown on gangs recruiting children
- specialist domestic abuse experts in 999 control rooms
- specialist rape investigation units in all forces
And more.... Image
In Stoke today we heard from people who said after 13 Tory years they see fewer police on the streets, more problems with antisocial behaviour, youth & knife crime, and too little done.

We’ve heard same story across country.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…

And it’s Groundhog Day

This Bill re-runs Tories failed 2022 law which made things worse.

Under 2022 law, 18,000 people considered inadmissible but only 21 returned because no returns agreements.

That’s 0.1% returns.

New Bill also fails on return agreements. Same problem/3
Bill also makes it harder to get new return agreements w France & other European countries due to unilateral approach.

So thousands of people will be put in indefinite taxpayer funded accommodation, never having their case resolved.

So Bill will make hotel problems worse!/4
No Govt answer on promises it made to Afghan interpreters who served UK but were too late for last flight from Kabul.

Govt told them to flee & find another route but resettlement scheme isn’t working. If they arrive in UK via Ireland now, Govt will forever make them illegal/5

Suella Braverman’s evidence to @CommonsHomeAffs today shows she has no grip on serious Home Office issues. From asylum backlog to passport delays to child refugees, she has no idea what’s going on or how to solve it.

6th Tory Home Secretary in 7yrs & country is being let down/1
Evidence session a catalogue of failure

After 12 years in power Conservative Home Secretary says Conservatives have “failed to control our borders.”

And still no action on criminal smuggler gangs putting lives at risk. Just ramping up rhetoric instead of hard work to solve it/2
On passports Suella Braverman claimed “we have fixed the problem..... successfully”........

Then had to admit that they were still operating to 10 week standards rather than returning to 3 weeks. And got confused about visas & passports.

So much for things being fixed/3

No plan to deal with collapse in Home Office asylum decisions (to just 14,000 a year - half the level of 6 yrs ago) that has created backlog, delays & costs. 96% of small boat cases from 2021 haven’t been decided. Recent laws added bureaucracy & extra delays/4
Failure to prevent & no plan tackle huge, recent proliferation of criminal gangs in Channel which puts lives at risk. Still refusing to adopt Labour plan for hundreds of specialist officers in new NCA unit to tackle gangs, yet pursuing £140m++ unworkable, unethical Rwanda plan/5
But as the failures get worse, so too does the truly shameful rhetoric.

No Home Secretary who was serious about public safety or national security would use highly inflammatory language on the day after a dangerous petrol bomb attack on a Dover initial processing centre/6

Home Secretary showed today neither she nor the PM remotely get the serious responsibilities of their office - including on national security & public safety.

Nor do they have any plan on Home Office challenges or how to solve the damage 12 years of Tories has done.
A thread/1
Home Secretary letter leaves serious security Qs unanswered.

Confirms it wasnt a one off. Sent Govt documents to personal email 6x in 43 days! Didn’t report breach “rapidly” & had to be repeatedly confronted. Importantly no answers on leak investigations while Attorney General/2
Further unanswered Qs on awful overcrowding at Manston. Allegations she refused to take action to comply with law, including at meeting on 19 Oct, in breach of Ministerial Code.

If true it means 3 breaches in a single day. How can anyone have confidence in this Home Secretary/3
