Earlier today we highlighted some individual prosecution decisions made by the now-suspended State Attorney Monique Worrell.

Now, let’s take a broader look at @GovRonDeSantis’ executive order to see how Worrell was derelict in her duty.

We’ll start with gun crime.
Florida has mandatory minimum sentences for gun crimes.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office referred 58 non-homicide Robbery with a Firearm cases to Worrell’s office in 2021 and 2022.

As of May 2023, only one mandatory minimum sentence had been imposed in any of those cases. Image
That Sheriff’s office also referred 11 non-homicide Carjacking with a Firearm cases and 14 non-homicide Home Invasion Robbery with a Firearm cases during that period.

Out of those arrests, only one resulted in a mandatory minimum sentence being imposed.
Finally, of the 130 cases involving Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon referred to Worrell’s office in 2021 and 2022 by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, only five resulted in a mandatory minimum sentence. Image
Worrell also limited the number of charges for Possession of Child Pornography on which the attorneys in her office could obtain a conviction, even when additional counts could be charged and proven at trial. Image
Consequently, the Ninth Circuit had among the lowest prison admission rates, on a per capita basis, for crimes involving lewd and lascivious behavior, which includes Possession of Child Pornography and other sex crimes against children.
Worrell also worked to avoid obtaining minimum mandatory sentences for drug trafficking offenses.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office referred 32 drug trafficking cases to Worrell’s office in 2021; as of March 2023, only three have resulted in a mandatory minimum sentence. Image
In 2022, 64 drug trafficking cases were referred to her office; none have resulted in a mandatory minimum sentence.

On a per capita basis, Worrell ranked last among state’s attorneys in the number of people incarcerated for drug trafficking. Image
Further, under Worrell’s direction, her office used a variety of techniques to allow serious juvenile offenders to evade incarceration where it would otherwise be appropriate.
Her attorneys were generally prevented or discouraged from “direct filing”: charging juveniles as adults.

During her tenure, the Ninth Circuit was dead last in Florida in the percentage of juvenile felony cases that were “direct filed” based on the most serious offense disposed. Image
Worrell’s office was also uniquely slow in processing cases for juvenile offenders.

Her office took twice as long to process juvenile cases than the Florida average, ranking dead last among Florida districts. Image
Worrell’s office also prevented or discouraged prosecutors from seeking sentencing enhancements for prison release reoffenders and habitual violent felony offenders. Image
Finally, Worrell’s subordinates have permitted or required prosecutors to seek the withholding of adjudication in cases where Florida law does not allow that. Image
Today, @GovRonDeSantis explained that “it is [his] duty as Governor to ensure that the laws enacted by our duly elected Legislature our followed.”

His actions today ensure just that.

Today, @GovRonDeSantis suspended State Attorney Monique Worrell for dereliction of duty and incompetence.

Here are some examples of her policies or practices in action.
Daton Viel was arrested in March 2023 for sexual battery on a minor, as well as Lewd and Lascivious Molestation.

That arrest was made while Viel was on probation for another offense. Viel was still let out on bond.

This past weekend, Viel shot two Orlando Police Officers. Image
In November 2022, 17-year-old Lorenzo Larry shot and killed his pregnant girlfriend, De’Shayla Ferguson.

Larry had previously been arrested in May 2022 for carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm on school property, and criminal possession of a firearm by a minor. Image

Trump has put out a slew of very good scripted policy videos

But I won't take him seriously until he actually demonstrates that he *cares* about policy more than Maggie Haberman's approval
All the scripted policy videos prove is that he has some good, based policy advisers

But he had good, based policy advisers in his first term who found themselves fired within a year

Meanwhile Kim Kardashian waltzed into the White House and got criminal justice reform through
This is why the debates matter

I don't want to see him taking questions from liberals

I want to see him explain to a *conservative* audience what he would do differently

In case it wasn't obvious: Trump might not be "the establishment," but he has built an establishment around him that behaves almost exactly the way the old establishment did
There's a reason that the vast majority of Trump's endorsements are coming from sitting legislators - and particularly House members

They are the people he can threaten with primary challenges
But this is what establishments do - "plata o promo" to enforce ideological conformity

The old establishment enforced neoconservatism

The new one enforces the idea that Trump is the greatest person EVER

Trump 2024's current strategy is supposedly to try to bully DeSantis out of declaring

It won't work for a few reasons

First, every poll shows DeSantis in a solid second, with anywhere from 20-40% of the vote. No other candidate gets more than single digit support.
Second, that base of support puts DeSantis in a much stronger position than he had in his first runs for Congress and for Governor.

If you read his book, he didn't come into politics with a strong network or institutional support.
Second, all the DeSantis bashing has the effect of reinforcing that this is a one-on-one battle between Trump and DeSantis.

In 2016, every non-Trump candidate was desperately trying to be the last man standing against Trump.

DeSantis has accomplished that without declaring.

New rule: if you did not end up holding the office that you ran for, then you didn't win the election for that office
"Trump won."

No, he didn't. You can argue that he got cheated. But he lost.
