So, the “fund Hawaii, not Ukraine” talking point has a lot of characteristics of a coordinated campaign that turned “organic” after seeding the narrative. These are a few examples. Image
These are the very first two tweets that used the phrase “Hawaii not Ukraine.” They were posted at 4:51 and 4:54 on 8/9, in response to a @DOTHawaii tweet.
Image
Image
@DOTHawaii Then this quote-tweet was posted an hour later, at 5:57 pm. Look at the engagement this tweet got compared to the one sent an hour earlier.
Image
Image
@DOTHawaii Then this tweet — the 4th tweet to use that specific phrase (“Hawaii, not Ukraine”) — was posted an hour later, at 6:52 pm. This was a breakthrough tweet that ranked at the top of the search results even days later.
Image
Image
@DOTHawaii After that ^ tweet was posted, the talking point started being picked up and tweeted more frequently. These two tweets, again using the same phrase (“Hawaii not Ukraine”) were sent just minutes after that last tweet, and from there it continued to pick up over the next two days.
Image
Image
This is a common format for influence/disinfo campaigns, where a talking point gets seeded by a few key accounts (amplifiers), then picked up by their networks. A big indicator of coordination here is the timing — the first 4 tweets were each sent almost exactly an hour apart.
The first account that tweeted the phrase “Hawaii not Ukraine” is interesting. It’s a small account and was created in July.

The account’s first tweet on 7/19 was a 34 second Space that was nothing but background music. The account has tweeted/RTd 136 times since then.
Image
Image
The account’s retweets are interesting, too. They’ve RT’d literally every single major right-wing influencer on Twitter, in what is almost certainly a purposeful/strategic process. To me, this suggests that the account is making contact for the purpose of signaling the network.

I’ll write this up with more info, but this was an interesting case study to break down in real time.

It’s also a great reminder/warning that crises & natural disasters are major attack surfaces (for malign state & non-state actors, extremists, etc) and we’re unprepared for it.

(!!!!) Special Counsel Jack Smith obtained a search warrant for search warrant for Donald Trump’s Twitter account, @realDonaldTrump, earlier this year, according to newly revealed court documents.

I’ve been waiting 6 years for this moment. Holy crap.

I don’t think most people realize how severely the Trump admin violated Americans’ privacy rights through their surveillance and targeting of social media accounts. I also don’t think a lot of people realize that Trump’s account was an amplifier in an influence network.
Remember this?

I do. It wasn’t an isolated incident.

My latest, on rage farming and the monetization of Internet outrage:
medium.com/@RVAwonk/rage-…
It’s interesting to consider how much online outrage isn’t actually outrage, but rather is people modeling outrage behaviors because they see others doing it and getting positive feedback for it. We’re actually pretty bad at accurately gauging levels of outrage online.
Image
Image
Every time we engage in a new outrage cycle, we’re training the recommendation algorithms to serve more of that content. Algorithms don’t differentiate between negative vs positive engagement — all they see is that you’re spending time & attention on racist memes & outrage bait.

This. Monetizing harassment & the pathological fandom it often spawns is an entire industry, and it often happens in your networks without you noticing (or bothering to look).

Same thing with political operatives masquerading as researchers. It’s toxic and needs to be stopped.
You need to be willing to recognize & call out these unacceptable practices even when the perpetrator is on “your side” politically, & even when the target is not. Online adversaries recognize partisan ideological rigidity as a vulnerability, & they exploit it very effectively.
We should also have a serious discussion about the weaponization of identity, and how that is used to silence survivors of of abuse, harassment, wrongdoing, etc., but I’ll save that for the article I’m writing because Twitter has proven itself unsuitable for complex thought.

It occurred to me that much of what we see on social media right now — namely, rising levels of hostility & cruelty, and increasingly rigid in-group/outgroup boundaries — is probably, sadly, a coping mechanism that reflects an attempt to cling to a world that no longer exists.
I think we still haven’t come to grips with how much the pandemic fundamentally changed ~everything~ and how hard some people are still fighting to avoid acknowledging that those changes are not only real, but permanent. The world from before is gone. It exists only as a memory.
People who are hurting, hurt people. That’s not an excuse but it’s a truism. And people who are scared latch onto anything they can — including group membership — to ground themselves and convince themselves that there is still stability in this world, even if only superficial.

Big new detail here confirming what we already knew: Trump and his inner circle had plans to incite “riots in every major city” in order to lay the groundwork to invoke the insurrection act and institute a militarized crackdown. These plans involved extremist groups, as well. Image
Here’s the info from the Oath Keepers indictment in which they talked about Trump invoking the insurrection act and then calling on them to be part of the militarized crackdown that would’ve marked the beginning of the end of democracy in America.
Trump was actively pushing to use the Insurrection Act in early 2020, and apparently never let go of the idea. This was a plan that was coordinated & drafted long in advance.

Had “antifa” shown up in large numbers and been unprepared for this, this plan would’ve been activated.

This is the essence of cognitive warfare as it currently defined. It combines elements of cyber, information, & electronic warfare, and it will make Cambridge Analytica seem like child’s play.

We are not ready for what is coming.

In the most likely scenario, we’ll see this used in conjunction w/ an attack on the power grid or other critical infrastructure. It will turn a crisis into a catastrophe. As people look for info but find none, they’ll go to social media, where pre-planned disinfo campaigns await.
Knowing that people in crisis are more susceptible to certain types of disinfo, we’ll be faced with targeted messages that were designed specifically to exploit our cognitive-emotional state, and microtargeted using the data that has been stolen from us over the past decade.
