The CFO Tech Stack

After working with 100+ companies in my career...

I've tried just about every tool out there.

These tools will help you do your job:
→ with more accuracy
→ with more efficiency
→ with less resources

Let's do a walk through each category🧵 Image
Accounting & ERP

Let's start with the most relevant software - your Accounting Software / ERP

I see a lot of companies start off with QBO...

and I'm generally a big fan

Once you get sophisticated enough, you can move to Netsuite

These 2 dominate this space https://t.co/LPcsRa2d7Itwitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Image
Payroll & HRIS

Next must have tool is your payroll & HRIS platform

No one processes payroll by hand these days

My favorite is Justworks & Rippling, as they both are a PEO, saving you tons of headache

Gusto is a good option if you want cost savings, but not an ERP https://t.co/4KX97I7aPbtwitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Image
Accounts Payable

Pretty much every company has AP

And some are still processing from their bank...

or worse...a check 🤮

With an AP platform you can:
→ Upload bills from your inbox
→ Sync to your Accounting software
→ collect approvals
→ process payments seamlessly https://t.co/q0jQ4gxB41twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Image
Expense Reimbursements

Companies love paying for things on their personal cards...

so everyone can get CC points.

The key with a software like this is you need to be able to:
→ upload receipts
→ create expense reports
→ approve
→ reimburse https://t.co/sv0cCArI1Utwitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Image
Virtual Credit Cards

This is my favorite tool...

Instead of expense reimbursements, give your employees a virtual CC

Here you can:
→ Create new cards
→ Set Limits
→ Destroy Cards

All in a matter of seconds... https://t.co/7iFfl4mEz7twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Image
Tax and Legal

The govt loves making it complicated and a pain in the @$$ to pay your taxes

But these companies make it easier for you...

especially with sales tax

I lumped in Carta into this category, as they are a key piece in your legal stack...& are the cap table leaders https://t.co/ptf1UHGwD4twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Image
Banking & Treasury

OK...we all remember what happened to SVB 🫣

But surprisingly, many startups are still using them...without any issue

There are a bunch of big players (like JP Morgan)...

And tech enabled solutions (like Stripe, Rho, and Mercury) https://t.co/N2RJ2LblZntwitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Image
Revenue & Contract Management

Got more than 40 contracts?

Don't make the mistake of managing all of that in Excel

With these tools, you can recognize your saas metrics, along with your revenue / deferred revenue with ease. https://t.co/wdbmUqTLv4twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

General Tech Stack

Then there are countless tools that are vital in any org...

and a good CFO has a good handle on each of these tools, and the cost savings associated https://t.co/jU1HxccWu7twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

What are my favorite tools?

Well, I work with early stage startups...and what I recommend is:

• Accounting Software - QBO
• Payroll - Justworks
• CC / AP / Expense Reimbursement - Ramp (it's also free)
• Banking - Chase
• Sales tax mgmt - Avalara
• Revenue mgmt - Maxio
And that's a wrap! To be added next time: FP&A tools

What else would you add?

I use these Excel functions EVERY single day in my fractional CFO work 💼

While there are hundreds of Excel functions available, there are only a select few that I use almost every day...9 to be exact.

Today, we're going to do a deep dive on these 9 functions, and how you can use them in your work too. 👇Image
➡️ SUMIFS

This one is my go-to, and is what it sounds like. It "SUMS" data in a range "IF" it meets a certain level of criteria.

For example…I'll often times condense a profit & loss into a summarized profit and loss using SUMIFS. Image
➡️ INDEX MATCH

The Dynamic Duo

It in essence combines both the Index and the Match value, allowing you to have complete flexibility over your range with dynamic inputs.

Many feel that XLOOKUP is superior, and I won't fight it - it's all a matter of personal preference! Image

Dashboards are my favorite thing to create in Microsoft Excel...

and when set up correctly, they add a ton of value to a presentation

Here is how I build Dashboards using just 8 steps... Image
Step 1: Import your data

This can be anything...

but most commonly, it involves your:

1. Profit & Loss
2. Balance Sheet

from there you can get your cash flows via the indirect method

other areas to import can be revenue, headcount, and other KPIs Image
Step 2: Clean with Power Query

Before you can work with your data in a flexible & dynamic way…

it needs to be structured correctly.

That’s where Power Query comes in.

If you haven’t used Power Query….oh boy…you are missing out. Image

This post contains EVERYTHING you can do in excel 😱👇

Excel continues to be the #1 tool used for Finance & Accounting professionals…

and for good reason.

With excel, there are pretty much no limits to what you can accomplish.

Let’s do a walk through it all 👀 : Image
📁 File → access & manage key areas of your workbook

This is where most people start out when they open an excel file…

here you can create a new file…open an existing file..

access a template…or access key options. Image
🏠 Home → access your clipboard, font, alignment, number format, cell styles, and filters

My favorite tools here are:

• Set paste options

• Control cell aesthetics

• Change cell format

• Formatting cells Image

Learn about the 3 financial statements, and how they are all connected

In just a few minutes, I'm going to teach you the most important concepts behind the Financial Statements...

and we're going to have a TON of fun along the way... Image
The 3 financial statements are:

1. The Profit & Loss
2. The Balance Sheet
3. The Statement of Cash Flows

You may also hear of the Statement of Changes in Equity, and Notes to the financial statements, but those aren't as commonly included
Before we dive into each statement...

It's important to understand the difference between:

the CASH basis
→ treats money in as income
→ money out as expenses

the ACCRUAL basis
→ treats amounts EARNED as income
→ amounts INCURRED as expenses Image
