Why are the boats burning in Lahaina Harbor and why was there a circle of fire surrounding Lahaina Town?

The Giant Banyan Tree was planted April 24, 1873.

The building between the tree and harbor is 648 Wharf Street, the old Lahaina Courthouse and most recently the visitors center and cultural museum.

600 Wharf Street is across the street from the old Lahaina Courthouse and has a matching roof.

Why wasn't it destroyed? Why does it have char marks on the harbor side of the Roof?
