Britain is under attack. A 🧵

Distinguished lawyer @JacquiMckenzie6 is known for her work on the #Windrush scandal, for which the govt claims to be sorry

She even worked with the Home Sec to review these unjust deportations, an act of good faith many of us would nt have managed
Now the Conservatives have singled her out, briefing right-wing newspapers in the hope that they will target her personally

@JacquiMckenzie6 says as a result of being vilified this way, she now feels "at considerable risk of physical harm "theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
Imagine the Bar Council & Law Society of England & Wales having to issue a joint statement rebuking the British government for attacking a lawyer

And cautioning that weaponising legitimate legal work for political gain is an assault on the rule of law lawsociety.org.uk/contact-or-vis…
As Black women we don't have to imagine the deeper violence ingrained in this threat: that we must know our place and keep quiet in the face of injustice, abuse of power, wrongdoing...

even when holding officials to account for this is literally our job
In other countries, it's far-right facist thugs who attack lawyers for upholding rights and freedoms. In Britain, today, it's our own government.

People are rightly shocked and horrified by the casual racism & violence towards Africans on display in France, where it was suggested the risk of new coronavirus treatment could be dealt with by experimenting on Africans. But we wd do well to remember.. bbc.com/news/world-eur…
That within living memory, the French were dropping atomic bombs in the middle of the African continent more than 3x as powerful as Nagasaki, poisoning millions of Africans to still unknown effect...
That the medical profession still reveres doctors like gynaecologist James Marion Sims, who experimented on black women, performing surgery without anaesthetic...
