"I think making guys hit some long irons again, and some mid irons, and being able to hit every club in your bag in a round of golf. I can't remember the last time when I've had to do that."
- Rory McIlroy
Is Rory right? Does he never hit every club?
Let's check the data. 👇
I looked at Rory's rounds from 2021 to 2023.
I looked at his tee shots on par 3s, and second shots on par 4s and 5s.
I created seven distance buckets:
➡️100 to 124 yards
➡️125 to 149
➡️150 to 174
➡️175 to 199
➡️200 to 224
➡️225 to 249
➡️250+
If you have at least one shot in each of those distance buckets, you are using a wide variety of clubs.
In 36% of his rounds Rory had at least one shot in each distance bucket.
In 89% of his rounds Rory had at least one shot in 6 of 7 distance buckets. (89% of the time)

Having expectations that are realistic for your skill level is key.
Should you believe you can make that 8-foot putt? Yes.
Should you beat yourself up when you miss an 8-foot putt? No.
2/x
Should you be upset if you only make 45% of your 8-footers? Not at all. Tour pros only make ~50%!
Should you be upset if you are a 10-cap and only make 3% of your 8-footers? No. You should let this info inform what parts of the game you need to work on.
