A mega-thread of stats from @ArccosGolf

🧵🧵🧵 Image
If you have a median distance with driver of 284 yards, you are longer than 99.7% of the male amateurs that play the game.
Scratch amateurs make bogey or worse on ~30% of the holes they play.

They make bogey...

...or worse...

...on nearly one out of every three holes.
Players with a 10.0 index:

Scoring average (all rounds):
➡️85.1

Scoring average (rounds where they make zero doubles or worse)
➡️78.7
For players with a 5 index:

From 55 yards in the fairway the ball is more likely to finish OUTSIDE 40-feet than it is to finish inside 10-feet.
From 21 feet the typical 5 index player will three-putt more than they will hole-out.
🚨Fairways are overrated for amateur golfers🚨

A 10 index player from 100 yards:

➡️Averages 3.38 strokes from the fairway
➡️Averages 3.50 strokes from the rough

The real scorecard killer for amateurs?
➡️Penalty strokes
How long would a par 72 course need to be for the typical 12 index player to have a scoring avg of 72?

Answer:
3,820 yards

All par 3s = 35 yards
All par 4s = 216 yards
All par 5s = 380 yards
Scratch players are in about the top half percent of all amateur golfers.

They average ~4.7 bogeys per round.
Chips from rough vs putting for a 10 index:

5 yard chip = 58 foot putt
6 yards = 61 feet
7 yards = 65 feet
8 yards = 68 feet
9 yards = 72 feet
10 yards = 77 feet

These numbers are *about* the same for every handicap index.
How long would a par 72 course need to be for the typical scratch player to have a scoring avg of 72?

Answer:
5,652 yards

All par 3s = 113 yards
All par 4s = 308 yards
All par 5s = 530 yards
My 7-handicap buddy:
▶️"I can't believe I made bogey from 95-yards in the middle of the fairway."

Me:
▶️"7-handicap players make bogey from 95-yards in the fairway 24% of the time. One out of four times they make bogey."
12-index players average ~0.6 birdies per round.

About one bird for every ~30 holes played.
In 29% of the rounds played by scratch players...

They make bogey (or worse) on at least 8 holes.
A 5 index from 150 yards in the fairway....

If they hit it inside 61 feet, they gain strokes on the approach shot.
The typical 10-handicap averages ~2.6 three-putts per round.
10-index:

Will average ~2.91 shots from 10-yards in the bunker.

Will average ~2.61 shots from 10-yards in the rough.
5-index players make bogey or worse on 44% of the holes they play.
10-index from 200-yards in the fairway:

~50% of shots finish more than 92-feet from the hole.
5-index players:

They average more doubles (or worse) per round than birdies.

▶️1.6 doubles or worse per round
▶️1.2 birdies per round
Average birdies per round:

Scratch players:
▶️2.2

20-handicap players:
▶️0.3

Scratch players are 20 shots better than 20-handicap player...

... yet they only make 1.9 more birdies per round.

Reduce the big numbers!

"I think making guys hit some long irons again, and some mid irons, and being able to hit every club in your bag in a round of golf. I can't remember the last time when I've had to do that."

- Rory McIlroy

Is Rory right? Does he never hit every club?

Let's check the data. 👇
I looked at Rory's rounds from 2021 to 2023.

I looked at his tee shots on par 3s, and second shots on par 4s and 5s.

I created seven distance buckets:
➡️100 to 124 yards
➡️125 to 149
➡️150 to 174
➡️175 to 199
➡️200 to 224
➡️225 to 249
➡️250+
If you have at least one shot in each of those distance buckets, you are using a wide variety of clubs.

In 36% of his rounds Rory had at least one shot in each distance bucket.

In 89% of his rounds Rory had at least one shot in 6 of 7 distance buckets. (89% of the time)

My putting studio is finally done!

The platform is 16 feet by 4 feet and adjustable.

I might never leave.

See you in a few weeks. Maybe.
Details on the platform.

This is a torsion box. Video link below on how to make one.

I used 3.5 inch mdf molding for the honeycomb and baltic birch plywood for the skins.

Everything was glued with liquid nails and screwed.

I used heavy duty furniture leveling feet.

"More and more land" is NOT being gobbled for tee boxes as suggested below.

Report # 33 in the USGA Distance Insight Project studies this.

When you remove courses from the study that added land because of a new range, there was an avg DECREASE in land use of 1.2 acres.

How far do tour pros REALLY have for:

➡️Tee shots on par 3s
➡️2nd shots on par 4s
➡️2nd shots on par 5s

This is from 2022 and 2023.

150 = 150 to 159 yards to hole
160 = 160 to 169 yards to hole
etc...

I should schedule this tweet once a week.

Managing your expectations does NOT mean lowering them.

Managing your expectations does NOT mean you try less, or you don't care.

1/x
Having expectations that are realistic for your skill level is key.

Should you believe you can make that 8-foot putt? Yes.

Should you beat yourself up when you miss an 8-foot putt? No.

2/x
Should you be upset if you only make 45% of your 8-footers? Not at all. Tour pros only make ~50%!

Should you be upset if you are a 10-cap and only make 3% of your 8-footers? No. You should let this info inform what parts of the game you need to work on.

Great DM question from @richalbi98

"From what distance on every hole do you think you could win The Masters?"

Let's do this for a 5 handicap.
I just took a quick back-of-the-napkin at this.

I got the average per-hole score of the last 10 winners.

I then looked at what distance a 5-cap would need to play that hole to achieve the same avg score.

I moved them 40 yards closer for a "course difficulty adjustment".
Assumptions:

All par 3s (which will play VERY short) will be "long-sided" chip/pitch shots.

All tee shots from a flat lie.

I come up with a 3137 yard par 72 course.

If I adjusted for playing in front of that crowd, I would guesstimate 2277 yards par 72 course.
